Reddit can deactivate an account after “prolonged inactivity,” but its current User Agreement does not define how long that is or promise that logging in or posting on a particular schedule will protect an account. Keep your recovery details current and use Reddit’s official recovery options if you lose access. Reddit still documents Old Reddit for some account tasks, but that is not a guarantee the legacy interface will remain available indefinitely.
How long can you leave a Reddit account inactive?
Reddit’s User Agreement, effective March 31, 2026, says: “If you stop using the Services without deleting your Account, your Account may be deactivated due to prolonged inactivity.” The provision does not define “prolonged,” set a countdown, specify a notice period, or describe exceptions. Read Reddit’s User Agreement.

That means there is no source-backed schedule—monthly login, occasional posting, or any other cadence—that can be presented as a guaranteed way to prevent deactivation. Sign in when you want to use Reddit and maintain access to your account’s recovery methods; treat that as sensible account maintenance, not a policy guarantee.

Reddit lists email, password, and two-factor authentication among the account information and settings users can access. Its help page says desktop web is often the easiest place to find account information. Reddit’s account information guide explains where to look.
#1 Best Overall
- Keep access to the email address associated with your Reddit account.
- Use a password you can retrieve securely, and update it through Reddit’s official process if you cannot sign in.
- If you enabled two-factor authentication, retain access to the configured second factor and any recovery method Reddit provides.
These measures help you regain access; Reddit does not say they prevent inactivity deactivation.
Distinguish inactivity from a lock or ban
A sign-in problem does not by itself establish that inactivity caused it. Reddit’s account status overview distinguishes security locks from bans: a locked account requires a password reset, while bans concern rule violations. Follow Reddit’s recovery or appeal instructions for the status shown on your account rather than assuming the cause.
Can you keep using Old Reddit?
Reddit’s current help pages still document Old Reddit for particular account-management tasks. For example, its February 2026 deletion instructions include an Old Reddit route, and a troubleshooting page updated in November 2024 suggests trying Old Reddit if deletion on reddit.com produces an error. Those instructions show that Reddit documents the legacy interface for some flows; they do not promise that old.reddit.com, or every older feature, will remain available. See the account deletion instructions and deletion troubleshooting.

Old Reddit is an interface, not a backup of your account or a substitute for recovery information. If a control is missing there, try the current reddit.com settings or the official app instructions linked from Reddit’s account information guide.

Inactivity, account deletion, and account access are different
- Inactivity deactivation: Reddit says an account may be deactivated after prolonged inactivity, without specifying a period in the cited agreement.
- User-requested deletion: You initiate removal of the account. Reddit says deletion cannot be reversed, the username becomes unavailable, and you lose access to the account and its history. The process begins within 90 days to remove or anonymize the account from Reddit’s servers, according to its deletion help page.
- Security lock or ban: These are separate account-status issues with their own recovery or appeal routes, as described in Reddit’s status overview.
Deleting an account does not automatically delete its posts or comments. Reddit says they remain but are disassociated from the deleted account. If you want particular posts or comments removed, delete them before deleting the account. Reddit explains what happens to usernames, posts, and comments.
