What counts toward an NYT Connections streak
Connections streaks are tied to the puzzle’s release day, not simply to whether you eventually play that puzzle. The daily puzzle must be completed before midnight in your local time. The New York Times states: “If you finish a puzzle after midnight local time, your streak will be broken and a new streak will begin.” A completion that crosses the local-midnight boundary is therefore treated as late even if you started the puzzle the previous evening.

NYT also says that “Connections streaks cannot be reset once they are broken.” There is no published reset button, account setting, or archive action that can put the old current streak back. The practical goal is to prevent the next break and to distinguish a genuinely broken streak from a result that failed to sync or is being viewed under the wrong account.

How to keep the streak from breaking
Sign in before starting the puzzle
Use the same New York Times account every time you play. When you are logged out, NYT says game progress is stored locally on that device rather than on your account. Local-only data can disappear if the browser data is cleared, the app is removed, or you switch devices. When you are signed in, saved puzzle progress, statistics, and streaks are associated with the account and can be available across devices.

Check the account indicator before beginning a puzzle, especially after changing phones, reinstalling the Games app, or using a private browser window. If two people use the same device, confirm which account is active rather than assuming the last player’s session is still open.
Finish before the local cutoff
Plan around your own local time zone. The relevant boundary is midnight where you are playing, not a New York time-zone conversion and not the time at which the puzzle first appeared elsewhere. If you are still solving close to midnight, submit the puzzle with enough time for the result to register. A solve completed after the boundary starts a new streak even when the delay is only a few minutes.
Keep a reliable signed-in session
On a phone or tablet, update the Games app through your device’s normal app store and avoid signing out while a puzzle is in progress. In a browser, do not delete site data until an in-progress puzzle has been submitted and its result is visible. These habits do not change the streak rule; they reduce the chance that a valid completion remains only in a temporary local session.

A missing number can have several explanations, and they require different responses. The puzzle may have been completed under another account, the app may not have synchronized after play, the displayed statistics may be filtered by a stale session, or the puzzle may have been played from the archive. A late completion is not a synchronization error: it is recorded under the post-midnight rule and causes a new streak.

Start with the account and timing checks before reinstalling anything. Those checks establish whether the record is genuinely absent or simply being viewed in the wrong place.
Use the Connections statistics view as the record check
Where to look
After you complete a puzzle, the statistics page is available from the game. In the Games app, open the Me tab to view game statistics and streaks. A browser session may show the statistics immediately after completion; if it does not, refresh only after confirming that you are signed in to the intended account.
What the page shows
Connections statistics include the fields below. Compare them with the result you expect instead of relying only on the number shown on the puzzle screen.

NYT says the Connections statistics page covers puzzles played from June 15, 2024 onward. An older game or a record from before that date may therefore not appear in the same statistics history. That date is a coverage boundary for the statistics view, not a promise that an older streak can be reconstructed.

Step-by-step workflow for a missing Connections result
- Confirm the active account. Open the account controls in the browser or Games app and verify that the email or account identity matches the one used for the earlier streak. If you were logged out when playing, recognize that the result may have been saved only on that device.
- Open the statistics view. In the Games app, select Me, then inspect current streak, max streak, completed puzzles, win rate, perfect puzzles, and the mistake histogram. In a browser, return to the game’s statistics page after signing in.
- Compare the puzzle date with local midnight. Determine whether the completion was submitted before or after midnight where you were playing. A post-midnight submission is treated as late and cannot be converted back into the prior streak through the archive or another account setting.
- Refresh the session. Close the game, force-quit the mobile app if applicable, reopen it, and sign in again. This creates a fresh session that can request the account’s current saved statistics.
- Check another signed-in device only after the account check. If the same account is available on another phone or browser, open Connections there and inspect the statistics. A difference between devices points to a session or synchronization problem; a consistent value across devices is more likely to reflect the account’s recorded history.
- Reinstall only when ordinary refreshes fail. NYT’s Games troubleshooting guidance recommends reinstalling the app when necessary and says that reinstalling does not affect saved Games streaks or statistics. Make sure you know the correct account credentials before removing the app so you can sign back in to the intended account.
- Report a suspected technical error. If the account is correct, the timing does not explain the change, and the statistics remain inconsistent after a new session or reinstall, use the available bug-report or in-app feedback path for NYT Games support.
What the archive can and cannot do
The Connections archive is useful for playing older puzzles and adding those games to applicable statistics. It does not backfill a release-day streak. NYT specifies that archived puzzles affect statistics but neither the current streak nor the maximum streak, because streaks are based on the puzzle played on its original release day.
For example, playing yesterday’s puzzle from the archive today may increase a completed-puzzles count or contribute to other statistics, but it cannot repair a missed release-day completion. Do not use archive play as a substitute for solving the current daily puzzle before midnight.
Diagnosing common scenarios
“I played yesterday, but I now have a new streak.”
First check the exact submission time in your local time zone. If the puzzle was finished after midnight, NYT’s rule explains the new streak and there is no reset control to undo it. If you are certain the completion was before midnight, verify that you were signed in to the expected account and then inspect the statistics page. A support report is appropriate when the timing and account both check out but the record is still wrong.
“My results disappeared after changing phones.”
Sign in to the new device with the same New York Times account used on the old one. Signed-in progress, statistics, and streaks are designed to be available across devices. If the earlier play occurred while logged out, it may have existed only in the old device’s local storage and may not be recoverable through the account.

“The app shows one number, but the browser shows another.”
Check that both sessions use the same account, then force-quit and reopen the app and start a new login session. Compare the statistics again. If the discrepancy persists, record the device types, app or browser involved, and the values shown before contacting support.
“I reinstalled the Games app and lost my streak.”
NYT says reinstalling does not affect saved Games streaks or statistics. Sign back in to the account that held the record and open the Me tab. If the data is still absent after a fresh session, treat it as a possible account or technical issue rather than assuming the reinstall itself erased saved data.
“Can I play the missed puzzle in the archive to fix the streak?”
No. Archive play can contribute to statistics, but it does not alter current or maximum streaks. Only the release-day result is used for streak accounting.
When and how to contact NYT Games support
Escalate after the basic checks have ruled out the most common causes: wrong account, post-midnight completion, stale app session, and a display that has not refreshed. NYT’s troubleshooting guidance recommends restarting the app, starting a new login session, reinstalling if needed, and sending a bug report or app feedback if the problem remains.
Include enough detail for support to distinguish a timing break from a synchronization error:
- The email or account identity you used, without sending a password.
- The date of the puzzle that appears to be missing.
- Your local time zone and the approximate time you submitted the puzzle.
- Whether the puzzle was played in the app, a browser, or from the archive.
- The device model and operating-system version, plus the app version when relevant.
- What the Me statistics view shows for current streak, max streak, and completed puzzles.
- Whether force-quitting, signing in again, or reinstalling changed the display.
Screenshots can clarify a mismatch, but remove unrelated personal information before sending them. Support can investigate a suspected technical failure; the published guidance does not promise that a streak broken by a late completion can be restored.
Prevention checklist for every daily puzzle
- Open Connections while signed in to the account that contains your history.
- Check the local date and time when playing near midnight.
- Submit the puzzle before the local cutoff rather than waiting until the last minute.
- Confirm that the completion screen or statistics view reflects the result.
- Keep the app session open until the result has synchronized when using a mobile device.
- Use the same account when moving between a phone, tablet, and browser.
- Use the archive for missed puzzles only when you want to play them or update eligible statistics, not to repair streak accounting.
- If a result looks wrong, capture the date and statistics before changing accounts or clearing app data.

The practical limit on streak recovery
There are two different outcomes to keep separate. If the account correctly records a puzzle as late, the old streak is broken under NYT’s published rule and cannot be reset through a user control. If the puzzle was completed on time but the account statistics are missing or inconsistent, account verification, a fresh session, reinstalling when necessary, and a support report are the appropriate recovery path.

Keeping the account consistent and finishing before local midnight prevents the problem that players can control. The statistics view, rather than the archive, is the place to verify what the account has recorded.
