You cannot make Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 fully secure by installing another antivirus program: both operating systems have stopped receiving Microsoft security updates. Check which version is installed, then plan to move to a supported operating system or replace the computer. Until then, reduce exposure and use a supported device for sensitive tasks.
First, check whether you have Windows 8 or Windows 8.1
The names are similar, but their support ended on different dates. Microsoft says Windows 8 support ended on January 12, 2016, while Windows 8.1 support ended on January 10, 2023. Neither version receives Microsoft security updates. Microsoft explains what unsupported Windows means; its Windows 8.1 end-of-support notice also says there is no Extended Security Updates program for Windows 8.1.

To check the installed version, press Windows key + R, enter winver, and press Enter. Read the version information in the window that opens. Do not use “Windows 8” as shorthand when checking lifecycle dates or security-product compatibility.

Why antivirus cannot secure an unsupported Windows installation
Antivirus can detect or block some malicious files and activity, but it does not replace fixes to Windows itself. When Microsoft no longer ships security updates for an operating system, newly discovered vulnerabilities in that system can remain unpatched. Microsoft puts it plainly: “Your PC will continue to start and run, but you won’t receive software updates, including security updates, from Microsoft.”

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Windows Defender’s lifecycle ended on the same dates as the corresponding operating systems: January 12, 2016 for Windows 8 and January 10, 2023 for Windows 8.1, according to Microsoft’s Windows Defender lifecycle record. A third-party product may continue to provide some protection, but its availability and capabilities depend on the vendor, product version, and Windows version. That support cannot restore missing Windows patches.
Check your antivirus vendor’s exact support status
Before relying on an antivirus already installed—or attempting to install a replacement—check the vendor’s current lifecycle page for your Windows version and the product’s exact version. A product may receive limited threat-intelligence updates while newer app features or advanced protection are unavailable.

- Malwarebytes’ v5 lifecycle information lists Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 in connection with the 5.5.6.254 component package dated May 14, 2026. It says the latest advanced-protection app is unavailable on these systems and that existing installations may receive threat-intelligence updates for a limited time.
- ESET’s end-of-life information, last updated September 30, 2025, described version 18.x on Windows 8 as having limited support through October 2026 and version 19.x as fully supported until version 20. Its consumer guidance says there is no supported ESET home product for Windows 8.1. These are vendor- and product-specific lifecycle statements, not assurances of current protection.
Vendor policies change. Confirm the current status directly before making a decision, and do not interpret limited application or definition support as security support for Windows.
Choose a supported operating system or computer
The durable fix is to stop using an operating system that no longer receives security updates. Microsoft’s options depend on whether the computer meets the requirements of a supported Windows release. Its Windows 8.1 guidance does not offer a free direct upgrade path from unsupported Windows versions.

| Route | When it fits | Key considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade the current computer | The hardware meets the requirements for a supported Windows release. | Check compatibility first, then plan for application setup and file transfer. Installation can overwrite existing storage. |
| Replace the computer | The existing hardware cannot run a supported Windows release. | Microsoft recommends replacing an incompatible PC with one that supports Windows 11. Budget for transferring files and reinstalling applications. |
| Install a maintained Linux distribution | The hardware cannot handle newer Windows and your applications and workflow work on Linux. | Choose a distribution that still receives security updates and be prepared to learn a different operating system and check application compatibility. |
Mozilla also identifies Linux as an option for older hardware. Whether it is practical depends on the specific distribution, computer, applications, and peripherals; choosing Linux does not remove the need to install updates and maintain the system.
Back up your files before migrating
Make a separate copy of documents, photos, and other important files before upgrading or replacing the computer. Microsoft warns that installing Windows can overwrite the existing drive. Its Windows 8.1 migration guidance describes using cloud storage or an external hard drive or USB key to copy files. An external drive can help with backup and transfer; it does not make Windows 8 secure.

- Copy important files to a separate location, such as an external drive or cloud storage.
- Check that the copied files open from the backup before starting an installation.
- List the applications and account credentials you will need on the new system, and confirm that essential apps work with the operating system you plan to use.
- Install or set up the supported system, then transfer files and reinstall applications from trusted sources.
Reduce exposure while arranging the move
There is no interim setting that restores the security updates Windows no longer receives. While you arrange migration, use these measures to reduce avoidable exposure—not as a guarantee of safety:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Use a separate, supported device for banking, shopping, work accounts, and other sensitive activity.
- Avoid untrusted downloads, unexpected attachments, and links you cannot verify.
- Keep applications that still support your system updated, and remove software you no longer need.
- Keep a current backup of important files so a failure or malware incident does not leave your only copy on the old computer.
Will switching browsers keep you protected?
No. A supported or extended-support browser can address some browser-specific vulnerabilities, but it cannot patch Windows. Mozilla currently identifies Firefox 115 ESR as the last Firefox version for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1, with security updates planned through March 2027; Mozilla says it will re-evaluate that extension. Its Firefox support page also says most browsers, including Chrome and Edge, have ended support for these Windows versions. Microsoft says Edge 109 was the last supported Edge version on Windows 8.1.

- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Browser support dates and policies can change, so check the vendor’s current page before choosing a browser. Even if a browser still receives updates, that does not make the underlying Windows installation supported.
Can you still use Windows after support ends?
The computer may continue to start and run, but it no longer receives Microsoft security updates. Continuing to use it is a decision to accept that unpatched operating-system vulnerabilities may remain. If you cannot migrate immediately, limit what you do on it and move sensitive tasks to a supported device while you prepare a longer-term solution.
