What Is SrtTrail.txt and Why Does Windows Startup Repair Create It?

SrtTrail.txt is a diagnostic log created by Windows Startup Repair. Learn what it means, where to find it, and how to reach Windows recovery options.

SrtTrail.txt is a diagnostic log that Windows Startup Repair creates while it investigates startup problems and records the repairs it attempted. Seeing the file named in an “Automatic Repair couldn’t repair your PC” message does not, by itself, identify the cause or prove that a particular component has failed.

What SrtTrail.txt contains—and what its name means

Microsoft describes the file as a log intended to help you understand startup issues and the repairs made by Startup Repair. The documented location is %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. In a normal Windows session, %windir% usually refers to the Windows installation directory.

The filename is associated with Startup Repair’s log; it is not itself an error code. Its presence or mention in a repair message does not name a single underlying fault. The log can provide diagnostic information, but a filename alone is not a complete diagnosis.

Why Startup Repair creates the log

Startup Repair runs in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). It checks for common problems that can prevent Windows from starting and attempts repairs. Microsoft lists examples including missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data, a damaged master boot record, incompatible drivers, and registry errors. These are examples of problem categories the tool may address—not a finding that any one of them caused a particular PC’s failure.

When Windows reports “Automatic Repair couldn’t repair your PC” and points to SrtTrail.txt, distinguish the two things: the message says the repair attempt did not resolve the startup problem, while the file is the diagnostic log created by the tool. The message does not mean the log itself caused the failure.

Where to find the file in Windows Recovery

Microsoft documents the path as %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. In WinRE, drive letters can differ from those assigned during an ordinary Windows session. Do not assume the Windows folder is on C:; identify the volume containing the Windows installation before looking for the log.

How to reach Startup Repair

If you can open Windows Recovery Environment

  1. Open WinRE and choose Troubleshoot.
  2. Select Advanced options, then Startup Repair.
  3. Follow the prompts and provide a BitLocker recovery key if Windows asks for it on an encrypted device.

If Windows does not offer recovery options

Microsoft also documents using Windows installation media to start the PC and reach recovery troubleshooting. A USB flash drive can serve as installation or recovery media, but it is only a way to access those options—not a repair product or a guarantee that Startup Repair will fix the problem. On an encrypted device, you may need the BitLocker recovery key.

What to take away from an SrtTrail.txt message

  • The file is a Startup Repair diagnostic log, not a diagnosis by itself.
  • Its documented location is under the Windows installation’s System32LogFilesSrt folder.
  • Startup Repair attempts to address some common startup issues, but the fact that it created a log does not establish which issue is present.
  • If you need to access recovery tools, use WinRE when available or Windows installation media; keep a BitLocker recovery key available for an encrypted device.
