How to Keep Viewers on a YouTube 24/7 Stream When Restarting OBS

A stream key won’t keep video flowing while OBS is down. Use an independent backup path and test its handoff on the actual YouTube event.

To keep video playing while OBS restarts, arrange an independent backup encoder or relay and test that it takes over the same YouTube live event. A reusable YouTube stream key keeps your encoder configuration handy, but it does not keep sending video when OBS stops. YouTube does not promise that viewers will avoid buffering or interruption during an OBS restart.

Why restarting OBS can interrupt a 24/7 stream

OBS is the encoder sending your video to YouTube. When its process stops, its outgoing feed stops too. Reopening OBS with the same stream key may restore the encoder connection, but a key is a credential and address—not a backup feed. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings).

For video to continue while OBS is unavailable, another already-running path must send it. That might be a separately operated encoder or a relay, but its ability to take over your specific live event must be verified rather than assumed.

Set up and test a backup for the same YouTube event

  1. Choose a reusable key if needed. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and configure a custom stream key if you need to reuse one. Confirm OBS has the intended YouTube stream URL and key. Treat the key as secret: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  2. Review encoder start and stop behavior. Check YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings for the event. These settings allow starting or stopping from the encoder; they do not create a fallback feed.
  3. Prepare an independent backup path. It must be able to send video while the primary OBS process is stopped. A second encoder on the same computer may not be independent if the computer, network connection, or other shared component fails. Confirm how your specific backup is configured to join or take over the intended YouTube event.
  4. Run a controlled failover test before relying on it. Start a test stream with representative motion and audio. YouTube’s guidance is to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then check whether the player rolls over to the backup (YouTube live streaming tips). Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health, and watch the public or unlisted player from another device or network.
  5. Check what viewers actually see. Record whether the player buffers, loses the picture, or resumes, and whether the backup is on the intended event. YouTube’s instruction is to check for rollover; it is not a guarantee that every encoder and relay combination will behave identically or preserve every viewer without interruption.
  6. Restore the primary path deliberately. Once the backup is sending, bring OBS back carefully and verify which encoder is live before switching again. Avoid having two encoders send conflicting feeds unless your tested configuration explicitly supports that handoff.

What a stream key and YouTube settings can—and cannot—do

  • Custom stream key: helps reuse the encoder configuration. It does not transmit video by itself or keep the event alive while OBS is stopped.
  • Auto-start and auto-stop: let an encoder start or stop streaming under the configured settings. They do not provide backup video.
  • Failover: requires a separate feed that remains operational during the OBS restart, plus an end-to-end test on the intended event.

YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive behavior is not a guarantee of continuity or restart recovery for a 24/7 stream (YouTube encoder setup guide). For an intentional end to an event, YouTube instructs creators to end the stream and stop sending content from the encoder.

Troubleshoot a failed handoff or reconnect

  • The player goes offline when OBS stops: the backup may not be running, may not have access to the event, or may not be configured to take over. Recheck the backup path and repeat the controlled failover test.
  • The backup is sending, but viewers do not see it: inspect the Live Control Room preview and the player on another device or network. Verify that the backup is targeting the intended event and that the player rolls over.
  • OBS reconnects but the stream remains unhealthy: inspect OBS’s output status and YouTube’s dashboard messages. YouTube recommends checking CPU load, testing the outbound connection, and updating encoder software when troubleshooting (YouTube live streaming troubleshooting).
  • The same key does not restore the expected feed: confirm the configured stream URL and key in OBS and verify that the key belongs to the intended setup. Reusing a key does not guarantee a seamless reconnect or preserve the viewer experience.
  • The stream ends when you meant to keep it running: review auto-stop behavior and the event’s encoder settings. Do not rely on automatic archiving as a substitute for a live backup.
