Measure upload at the actual location, choose a conservative YouTube encoder profile, test the full stream, and check the Airtel account’s current fair-use terms before leaving it unattended.
What you need for a nonstop sermon stream
A YouTube Live stream needs an eligible channel, an encoder and a steady internet connection. For a fixed pulpit view, slides or a prepared sermon feed, a computer running OBS or another compatible encoder can send video and audio to YouTube. A camera and microphone are needed only if you are capturing a live service; an authorized prerecorded feed or still-image scene may not need them.

- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream and an encoder such as OBS.
- A video source: camera, still image, slides or authorized prepared programming.
- Clean audio routed into the encoder, if the stream includes audio.
- An Airtel connection with enough sustained upload capacity and data allowance for the selected bitrate.
- Reliable power for the computer and router, plus a person who can monitor and respond to faults.
YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance says channels must be verified, must not have a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Create or schedule the live event in YouTube Studio, select the encoder workflow, and use the stream key YouTube provides. Treat that key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. YouTube’s menus can change, so follow the current prompts in Studio.

For a mostly static sermon scene, 30 frames per second is usually a more appropriate starting point than 60 fps. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists these recommended H.264 ingest bitrates:

These are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates, not minimum Airtel plan upload speeds or a guarantee of stability. YouTube also documents H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, CBR, keyframes recommended every two seconds and no more than four seconds apart, and AAC or MP3 audio. H.264 is a broadly compatible choice. Use a codec only if your encoder handles it reliably.
Set the encoder’s video bitrate to the selected YouTube profile and use CBR if available. Choose a two-second keyframe interval, configure audio at a stable level without clipping, and use RTMPS when offered. YouTube says its data is encrypted through Google’s servers. Choose a profile based on measured upload with spare capacity, not on your advertised download speed.

Measure Airtel upload at the streaming location
- Check the exact account and plan. Review your current broadband plan, area availability and applicable fair-use policy in your Airtel account or on the Airtel broadband plans page. Airtel notes that actual speed depends on network feasibility and availability in the area.
- Test upload at different times. Use the MySpeed app or portal recommended by TRAI, and test during the hours when the stream will be running. A speed test is a snapshot; repeat it and also test the actual YouTube stream with the intended encoder settings.
- Compare sustained upload with the encoder bitrate. The upload connection must carry the video bitrate consistently, with additional headroom for fluctuations and other household traffic. If the test is marginal, lower the resolution or bitrate and repeat the test.
- Prefer a wired connection where practical. Connect the encoder to the router by Ethernet to avoid avoidable Wi-Fi instability. Ethernet does not increase the upstream capacity of the Airtel plan.
TRAI does not prescribe a minimum broadband upload speed. Its Broadband FAQ says providers must declare typical upload and download speeds in tariff offerings, with at least 90% of measured test samples meeting or exceeding the declared typical speed. That stated testing obligation is not a promise of uninterrupted service at your home.
Set up and test the YouTube Live feed
- Prepare the scene. In OBS or another compatible encoder, add the camera, still image, slides or prepared sermon feed. Route audio cleanly and check for silence, clipping and audio-video sync. If there is no live camera, do not add equipment you do not need.
- Configure the output. Set the resolution, frame rate, H.264 bitrate, CBR and keyframe interval described above. Select RTMPS if the encoder offers it.
- Connect to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live event using the encoder option, then enter the stream URL and key in the encoder. Keep the key confidential.
- Run an unlisted or private test if practical. Observe YouTube’s stream-health messages, then check the stream on a separate device for picture, sound, sync and stability. Test with the same motion and audio conditions expected during the actual service.
- Run the full chain before relying on it. Test the complete loop—source, encoder, router, YouTube ingest and viewer playback—and keep someone available to monitor early sessions.
Estimate the data use and check Airtel’s fair-use terms
A continuous stream consumes data around the clock. For decimal gigabytes, estimate usage as: Mbps × 86,400 seconds per day ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000. Multiply the daily estimate by 30 for a 30-day month.

These figures are arithmetic estimates from bitrate and time, excluding transport overhead and other household consumption; actual account counters may be higher. Airtel’s broadband terms currently state a 3333 GB fair-use threshold per billing cycle, followed by a reduction to 1 Mbps, and reserve the right to change the FUP. This is not a universal or permanent promise for every plan: confirm the terms on your own account before committing to a month-long stream. TRAI says providers should disclose their applicable threshold and post-limit speed. At 1 Mbps, the connection would be below YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendation for even 720p.
Keep the stream available and protect content rights
Plan for local interruptions
- Keep the computer and router ventilated and powered; disable sleep settings or updates that could interrupt the encoder when appropriate.
- A UPS can keep local equipment running through a short power cut, but it cannot prevent an Airtel network outage or an upstream power failure.
- A second internet connection can reduce outage risk if it uses an independent provider or route. Test switching and reconnection before depending on failover; seamless transfer is not automatic.
- Arrange for someone to check stream health and restart the encoder or resolve a broadband issue. A continuously scheduled stream is not automatically self-healing.
- Prepare a rights-cleared fallback slate or audio/video scene for interruptions.
Clear rights for every element
YouTube scans live broadcasts for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. Its live-stream copyright guidance says the live picture may be replaced with a placeholder, the broadcaster may receive a warning, and the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Strikes or other account action may also result.

Confirm that you have the necessary rights for sermon recordings, background music, hymns, lyrics, slides and video clips, including online streaming or public-performance rights where required. A licence alone may not prevent a live interruption: the rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Religious, educational or noncommercial use does not automatically remove copyright obligations.
When this is a YouTube stream, not an NIC webcast
NIC’s Webcast Services page describes government services operating 24×7 and lists OBS among encoder technologies. NIC’s separate service prerequisites mention a static public IP, outbound RTMP port 1935 and dedicated 2–4 Mbps per stream for an agency feeding NIC. NIC states that its webcast services are for Central and State Government institutions only. Those are NIC service conditions, not general requirements for a church or ministry sending a stream directly to YouTube.
