How to Keep the Same YouTube Live URL When Restarting a 4K 60fps Loop

A reusable YouTube stream key is not the same as a stable viewer URL. Schedule the event you want viewers to use, reconnect to that active event, and test encoder restarts, network loss and failover before relying on the link.

To give viewers a stable link, schedule the YouTube Live event first, share that event’s watch-page URL, and reconnect your encoder to that same event after a restart. A reusable stream key helps keep the encoder configuration consistent, but it is not the watch-page URL and does not, by itself, guarantee that the same viewer page survives every outage or event ending. YouTube’s documentation does not specify a universal reconnect grace period, so test your restart plan before relying on it.

Understand which YouTube URL you need to keep

There are three separate pieces in a YouTube Live setup:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Scheduled event and watch page: The event viewers open. Schedule the event whose link you plan to share; YouTube’s scheduling flow lets viewers share the URL and opt into reminders. The watch page is created when the encoder starts the stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide and live streaming help explain the event workflow.
  • Stream URL or server address: The ingest address configured in the encoder. Confirm the protocol and server URL shown in Live Control Room.
  • Stream key: The credential the encoder uses to send video to YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like; keep yours private. A custom reusable key avoids having to replace the encoder credential each time, but it does not itself preserve an event’s viewer link. See Manage live stream settings.

The key distinction is event continuity: reconnect to the still-active scheduled event if you want viewers to keep using its watch page. Creating a new event, or reconnecting after YouTube has ended the original event, should not be assumed to retain the original URL.

Set up a scheduled event and reusable encoder settings

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and use the Manage area to schedule the event. Set the event details, then copy its viewer-facing URL to share. Do not share the encoder’s ingest address or stream key with viewers.
  2. Open the event’s Stream settings in Live Control Room. Create or select a custom stream key if you want to reuse the same encoder credential. Treat it like a password.
  3. Confirm the server URL and protocol shown for the event. Configure your encoder with that ingest address and the selected key.
  4. Start the encoder and inspect Live Control Room to confirm that YouTube receives the feed and the event is live. Do not infer that viewers see an uninterrupted stream solely because the encoder says it is sending.
  5. For a restart, reconnect to the same scheduled event using its configured server URL and stream key. Check the event’s preview and status in Live Control Room before telling viewers the stream is back.

YouTube’s “Reuse settings” option copies metadata, settings, and the stream key into a new stream. It is useful for repeating a configuration, but it should not be treated as a way to preserve the old event’s watch page. YouTube says the option also copies the event’s auto-start and auto-stop selections. Review those settings on the event and verify its actual state during a restart; automatic stopping may not fit a plan that depends on the event remaining active.

Configure the encoder for 4K at 60fps

YouTube’s encoder settings page lists these video bitrates for 2160p (4K) at 60fps, accessed 2026-10-03:

Codec YouTube guidance for 2160p60
AV1 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum
H.265 (HEVC) 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum
H.264 35 Mbps recommended

These are YouTube’s published encoder settings, not independent performance measurements. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before launch because platform guidance can change. The same page gives general guidance for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264/H.265/AV1, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (four seconds maximum).

  • Set the encoder’s output resolution to 3840 × 2160 and frame rate to 60fps if that is the source and output you intend to deliver.
  • Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum.
  • Choose a codec and bitrate supported by both the encoder and your YouTube workflow. A bitrate value alone does not guarantee a clean feed; check YouTube’s stream-health indicators during a test.
  • Provide upload capacity above the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and notes that other devices sharing the network can reduce available upload bandwidth. See encoder settings and streaming tips.

Ordinary 4K SDR does not require an HDR setup. HDR has a separate YouTube workflow and additional requirements; use it only if your source, encoder and intended delivery are HDR-compatible.

Test restarts before sharing the event link widely

A reconnect can work only while the scheduled event remains available to receive the encoder feed. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not state an exact reconnect timeout or guarantee that every interruption leaves the event active. Test your actual encoder and network rather than planning around an assumed grace period.

  1. Schedule a test event and start the 4K60 loop.
  2. Confirm the event is receiving video and audio in Live Control Room, then open the viewer page separately.
  3. Stop and restart the encoder process, reconnecting with the same event settings. Check whether the original event returns to a healthy live state and whether its viewer page is still the one you intend to use.
  4. Simulate a network interruption. If you have a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network connection, then confirm that the player rolls over to the backup.
  5. Check auto-start and auto-stop behavior and the event’s state after each test. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and monitoring stream health; its streaming tips also warn that network disruption can break a stream.

Also plan for event completion: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when stopped. Do not assume a stopped or ended event can be made live again indefinitely under the same watch page; verify what Live Control Room offers for your specific event.

Troubleshoot a missing link or failed restart

What you see Likely issue What to check
The encoder connects, but viewers have a different URL A new event may have been created, or a copied “Reuse settings” stream may have been mistaken for the original event. Open Manage in YouTube Studio, locate the scheduled event you shared, and confirm its watch page and live status in Live Control Room.
YouTube does not receive the encoder after restart The encoder may be using the wrong server URL, protocol, or stream key. Compare its ingest settings with the event’s Stream settings. If the key may have been exposed, replace it and update the encoder securely.
The feed starts, then drops or becomes unhealthy Insufficient upload capacity, network instability, or an encoder configuration problem can interrupt delivery. Check YouTube stream health, confirm upload headroom beyond the total bitrate, reduce competing network use, and test the encoder at the intended resolution, frame rate and motion level.
The event appears ended or cannot be resumed The event may have stopped or ended, including through auto-stop behavior. Check the event status and auto-stop selection in Live Control Room. If YouTube has ended the event, do not assume its watch URL can be revived; schedule a new event if necessary and share its new viewer link.
The backup encoder does not take over cleanly Failover settings or the backup’s connection to the event may not be configured as expected. Test failover in advance by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet, then watch the player and event status as YouTube recommends.

Choose an encoder and loop method that can survive the restart

YouTube supports both software encoders running on a computer and standalone hardware encoders. Choose based on sustained 2160p60 encoding capability, supported codec and protocol, process-restart reliability, power and network resilience, and whether the system can replay the source in a loop automatically. YouTube’s guidance does not validate a particular encoder for this exact workflow, so check the manufacturer’s specifications and test the complete restart and failover path before depending on it.

A single encoder is simpler, but its computer, power supply, network and playback process are all potential interruption points. A primary-and-backup arrangement can improve recovery only if the backup can connect to the same active event and you have verified the player’s behavior during a real failover test.

Keep YouTube’s live and copyright rules in view

A stable URL does not grant rights to the material in the loop or guarantee that a broadcast can run continuously. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s copyright and live-streaming policies before starting. Repeatedly looping material does not make it original or rights-cleared, and a stream’s availability should not be confused with eligibility under YouTube’s monetization rules for reused content.
