There is no universally best AWS Region for an EC2-based YouTube Live stream. Start by ruling out Regions that fail your data-residency, security, instance, or service requirements; then measure the network path from your actual source location and compare the full workload cost. The nearest Region is a sensible candidate to test, not a guaranteed winner.
What the AWS Region can—and cannot—determine
Your Region affects where the EC2 workload runs, which AWS services and instance types are available, and the network route between your source, the instance, and YouTube’s ingest endpoint. AWS advises considering location alongside data location and other constraints, and its guidance on measuring network latency emphasizes testing from the locations that matter rather than relying on geography alone. AWS’s August 4, 2026 networking guidance does not establish a per-Region ranking for YouTube Live ingest.

Changing Region alone does not set the delay viewers experience. YouTube defines stream latency as the time from capture at the encoder or camera until viewers see the stream. Ingest route quality matters, but so do encoder configuration and YouTube’s latency mode. Lower latency can increase playback buffering; HLS can support HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP, but YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because video is sent in segments. YouTube’s live-streaming overview explains the available considerations.
Choose candidate Regions in this order
- Write down the constraints. Note where the video or application data originates, where operators work, any jurisdictional or data-residency limits, and the exact EC2 instance family and supporting AWS services you need.
- Eliminate Regions that do not qualify. Check current AWS service and instance availability, capacity, and any security or residency requirements. These can rule out a nearby or cheaper option. Availability changes, so verify it before committing.
- Measure from a representative source location. Compare latency and network quality from the place that will actually send the stream. AWS’s guidance recommends pre-deployment measurement and cautions against assuming that geographic proximity means a better route. A single ICMP ping is not a complete stream test: validate the real application protocol and sustained upload.
- Test the finalists with YouTube. Run a small deployment in each remaining Region and send a representative test feed. Compare stability, dropped frames, ingest warnings, and YouTube stream-health messages—not just round-trip latency. YouTube specifically advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
- Estimate the whole workload. Compare EC2 runtime, storage if used, and applicable data-transfer charges for each finalist. Regional prices differ; use the AWS Pricing Calculator for a current estimate rather than selecting on instance hourly price alone. Recalculate for long sessions or continuous operation.
- Select and document the result. Choose a Region that meets hard requirements, performs acceptably in the representative test, and has the lowest defensible total cost. Record the test date and conditions so you can reassess when prices or network conditions change.
Compare Regions on the same criteria
| Criterion | What to compare | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Network path | Measured latency and sustained stream stability from the actual source location to each candidate | Geographic distance alone does not reliably predict performance. |
| Requirements | Data residency, security and compliance obligations, required AWS services, and instance types | A hard requirement can exclude an otherwise close or inexpensive Region. |
| Total cost | EC2 runtime, storage, and applicable data-transfer charges | Regional prices differ; verify current workload pricing. |
| Operational fit | Capacity, deployment familiarity, monitoring, and recovery needs | Do not assume a Region has more capacity without checking current information. |
| YouTube ingest | Supported ingest protocol, encoder configuration, and observed stream health | The available official guidance does not identify one Region as universally best for YouTube ingest. |
Configure the YouTube encoder separately from Region choice
YouTube supplies the encoder with a stream URL and stream key. Use the current ingest protocol and encoder settings in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; Region selection does not replace this configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported and advises a representative test before the live event.

- Wi-Fi 6 support - Enjoy smooth 4K streaming, even when other devices are connected to your router.
- Video codec: YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS settings support H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1.
- Frame rate: The guidance supports up to 60 frames per second.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate encoding.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
- Bitrate: Choose it according to resolution, frame rate, and codec using YouTube’s current table. For H.264, the retrieved English guidance lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not AWS network requirements; other codecs and configurations have different recommendations.
If a Local Zone appears attractive because you need a workload close to a particular population center, evaluate it as a separate candidate. AWS Local Zones offer selected services, including EC2, near population centers; confirm the exact location, service availability, and pricing. The title alone does not establish that a Local Zone is preferable to a standard Region. See AWS Local Zones.
Common selection mistakes
- Picking the geographically closest Region without testing: the network route can make a farther candidate perform better. Measure from the real source location.
- Using ping as the only test: a short latency sample does not establish sustained upload stability or YouTube ingest health. Test the actual feed and inspect stream-health messages.
- Comparing only EC2 hourly prices: storage and applicable data transfer can affect total cost. Estimate the full workload in each finalist.
- Assuming Region controls viewer latency: Region is one part of the route; encoder settings and YouTube’s latency mode also matter. Test the whole path and weigh latency against buffering.
- Relying on an old availability or price check: instance and service availability, capacity, and prices can change. Recheck before deployment and record when you measured.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream rather than to run your own EC2 encoder, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
