Use Steam’s Settings > Downloads controls to combine a bandwidth cap, an overnight update window, and per-game priorities. Keep the Download Manager visible when you need to pause or reorder activity. This lets important games stay current without allowing a large patch to saturate your connection or compete unnecessarily with work and play.
What actually causes Steam updates to slow a PC
Steam updates can affect several resources at once, and the remedy depends on which resource is constrained.

- Internet bandwidth: downloading a patch can increase latency for video calls, cloud applications, browsing, streaming, and other devices on the same connection.
- Disk activity: Steam may unpack, verify, and replace files after the download completes. A hard drive or nearly full SSD can become the bottleneck even when the network is idle.
- CPU and security scanning: patch processing and antivirus inspection can briefly use processor time and storage I/O.
- Queue timing: several games may compete for the same connection or drive if updates start during your busiest hours.
The controls below manage Steam’s download scheduling and rate. They cannot guarantee that patch unpacking, installation, antivirus scanning, or storage work will have no foreground impact.

Set up the Download Manager first
The Download Manager is Steam’s central control surface for seeing what is active and changing the queue.

- Open Steam.
- Choose Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Keep the Download Manager available while configuring the client so you can see which title is using the network.
- Use the queue controls to pause an update, resume it, or move another update ahead of it when circumstances change.
This view is the fastest way to distinguish an active download from post-download disk work. If the network graph falls to zero but the drive remains busy, pausing and resuming may not immediately stop file processing; allow the current operation to finish or close other disk-heavy applications.
Choose a bandwidth limit that leaves headroom
A Steam bandwidth limit prevents an update from consuming the entire connection. Set it in Settings > Downloads, then test the result during a normal call, stream, or gaming session.
Check the unit before entering a number
Steam can display rates in bytes per second or bits per second. The capitalization matters: MB/s and KB/s are byte-based, while Mb/s and Kb/s are bit-based. One byte contains eight bits, so an apparently similar number can represent a very different cap. Confirm the unit shown by your client before choosing a value.

Leave enough unused capacity for the activities that must remain responsive. A household with video calls and several active devices needs more headroom than a single-user connection that is idle overnight. Start conservatively, observe latency and call quality, and raise the limit only if interactive traffic remains unaffected.

- Use a lower cap during work, school, or streaming hours.
- Use a higher cap inside an overnight update window when no one needs the connection.
- Pause the queue for an urgent call rather than repeatedly changing the cap if you need an immediate, guaranteed stop.
The cap controls download rate; it does not prevent Steam from using the drive or CPU to apply a patch after the data arrives.
Schedule routine updates for quiet hours
Enable Steam’s Only auto-update games between setting in Steam > Settings > Downloads. Select local hours when the computer and connection are least important, such as an overnight period.
- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Turn on Only auto-update games between.
- Choose a start and end time that covers your quiet period.
- Leave the client running and the computer awake during that window if you want updates to occur automatically.
- Check the Download Manager the next morning for a paused, queued, or failed item.
The window moves routine automatic updates to the hours you select. It is not a hard lock: launching a game or manually starting a download can override the schedule. If a title is urgently needed, launch it or start its update manually, then pause other queue items.

- Open the game’s Library page.
- Choose Properties > Updates.
- Select the policy that matches how you use that title.
- Review the option controlling background downloads while you are playing, especially for games with large patches.

These choices represent practical trade-offs: always-updated favors readiness, launch-only favors control, and high priority favors one game over the rest. Wording can change with Steam client releases; if a label differs, look on the game’s Properties > Updates page for the equivalent policy.
Use Steam’s newer automatic-update behavior deliberately
Steam has described a policy intended to balance game readiness with efficient bandwidth use. In a December 11, 2024 Steam News statement, the Steam Team wrote: "Steam continues to try to strike a balance between keeping your games ready to play and efficiently using your bandwidth."
Some current clients offer a global Let Steam decide style of behavior. When available, it is a sensible low-maintenance default: Steam can defer less urgent updates using factors such as play history and bandwidth availability. Add per-game exceptions for titles whose behavior must be predictable—for example, make a frequently played competitive game high priority while leaving an old single-player title on launch-only.
Valve previously described an activity-based rule in a March 30, 2020 Steam News item: "Only games played within the last 3 days will be updated immediately." Treat that statement as a dated policy description rather than a promise that every current client behaves identically. Review the controls shown by your installed Steam version.

Prevent updates from interrupting active play
In the game’s update properties, review whether downloads may continue while you are playing. Allowing background downloads can finish a patch sooner, but it may increase network contention and disk activity during a session. Disabling or restricting that behavior gives the game you are playing more predictable access to resources.
When a meeting or stream starts
- Open the Download Manager.
- Identify the active game update.
- Pause it immediately, rather than waiting for a bandwidth cap to take effect.
- Resume it after the call or stream, or move a smaller, more important update ahead of it.
When another game must launch now
Pause unrelated downloads, start the required game, and manually begin its update if Steam does not do so automatically. Once the title is ready, restore the queue and your normal schedule.

If the problem is storage pressure or a busy system drive, move seldom-used games to another Steam Library folder instead of uninstalling them and downloading them again later. This changes where the installed files reside; it does not replace bandwidth scheduling.
- Create or select a second Steam Library folder on a suitable drive using Steam’s storage-management interface.
- Open Steam’s storage view and select the installed game.
- Choose the option to move the installation to the other library folder.
- Wait for Steam to complete the file move before launching the title or shutting down.
Keep frequently played games on the fastest, least busy drive when possible. A slower secondary drive may reduce space pressure but can increase load and patch-application time for games stored there.
A practical configuration for common situations

Troubleshoot unexpected slowdown
The internet becomes unusable even with a cap
- Check whether the cap is expressed in bits or bytes.
- Confirm that another Steam item is not downloading after you paused the first one.
- Pause the entire queue during the urgent activity.
- Check other devices and applications before assuming Steam is the only source of traffic.
The PC remains sluggish after the download finishes
- Look for disk activity caused by unpacking, verification, or patch application.
- Allow the current operation to complete before starting another disk-intensive task.
- Keep adequate free space on the library drive; moving seldom-played titles can relieve pressure.
- Account for antivirus scanning, which may inspect newly changed game files.
An update starts outside the selected window
Check whether you launched the game or manually started its download. Those actions can override the automatic-update window. Also inspect the game’s individual policy and the Download Manager queue.
A rarely played game begins a huge download at launch
That is the expected consequence of Only update this game when I launch it. If launch-time waiting is unacceptable, switch that title to always updated and let the scheduled window keep routine transfers away from your active hours.
Menu wording does not match these steps
Steam’s labels can change between client releases. Start with Steam > Settings > Downloads for global controls and the game’s Properties > Updates page for exceptions, then choose the closest equivalent wording.

What these settings cannot promise
There is no hardware-independent percentage by which Steam settings will reduce CPU, RAM, disk, or internet use. The documented controls govern download timing, queue order, and rate; the actual impact of patch processing depends on the game, drive, available free space, security software, and the rest of the workload.
A bandwidth cap improves sharing of the connection, while a schedule improves timing. Neither guarantees that a patch will apply invisibly. For the least disruptive setup, combine both with per-game policies: keep only genuinely important games on always-update, defer rarely used titles until launch, and pause the queue whenever a time-critical task needs the machine.
