Yes—you can play many downloaded digital games without Wi‑Fi, but only after the console has confirmed your ownership while online. Download the complete game, sign in with the account that bought it, and enable the platform’s offline entitlement setting before disconnecting. On PS5 this is Console Sharing and Offline Play; on PS4 it is the account’s primary PS4 activation; on Xbox it is the console designated as Home; and on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 it is the game loaded as a virtual game card.
These settings do not make an online-only game work without a connection. Cloud-streamed games, games that require their own servers, subscription titles without an active entitlement, and software that must verify an online membership will still stop or ask you to reconnect.

What has to be prepared before you disconnect
A digital purchase has two separate parts: the game files stored on the console and a license proving that the account or device may start those files. Downloading the files alone is not enough. Each platform has a different way to attach that license to a console.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- PlayStation 5: Console Sharing and Offline Play attaches offline access to one PS5.
- PlayStation 4: The purchasing account’s primary-PS4 activation supplies the device entitlement.
- Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S: The Home-console setting attaches the device license to one console.
- Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: Loading the title’s virtual game card permits offline starts for that console.
Perform the setup while connected to the internet, then launch the game once before going offline. That gives the console an opportunity to finish installation, apply updates, and verify the account or subscription. If you have several consoles, decide which one should carry the device-based entitlement before you disconnect; changing it later requires an internet connection.

PlayStation 5: enable Console Sharing and Offline Play
Set up the purchasing account
- Connect the PS5 to the internet and sign in with the PlayStation account that purchased the game.
- Download and install the entire game. Wait for any separate installation or update process to finish; a title that is only partially installed may not start offline.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Choose Enable.
- Start the game while still online, reach its main menu, and then close it normally.
Sony Interactive Entertainment describes the result this way: “Play your games and media even when the console is offline.” The setting allows anyone using that PS5 to play purchased and downloaded games, not only the account owner. Sony permits the setting on one PS5 at a time, so enabling it on a different PS5 moves the offline device entitlement away from the first console.
What other users can do
Once Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled, another profile on the same PS5 can start a purchased game while the console has no connection. The purchasing account does not need to remain signed in for every local player, provided the game was downloaded under that account and the console still has the enabled setting.
If a PS5 game shows a padlock
A padlock normally means the console cannot currently validate the entitlement it expects. Work through these checks while online:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Confirm that the profile signed in is the account that bought the game.
- Check whether the title was supplied through PlayStation Plus and whether that entitlement is still active.
- Install any pending PS5 system-software update.
- Return to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and make sure the setting is enabled.
- Use the account option to Restore Licenses, then restart the console and try the game again.
- Check PlayStation service status before disconnecting; a temporary account or licensing outage can look like a local failure.
After restoring the license, launch the game once online. If it works online but not offline, verify that Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on this particular PS5 rather than another console.
PlayStation 4: make the purchasing account’s console primary
Activate the primary PS4
- Sign in on the PS4 with the account that purchased the game.
- Download and install the title completely while connected.
- Activate that console as the account’s primary PS4 using the account-management settings.
- Open the game once online so its installation and entitlement can be checked.
- Disconnect from the network and test the title with the intended local profile.
The primary-PS4 activation is the PS4 equivalent of the PS5 offline-sharing setting. It lets users of that designated console use the account’s purchased downloads without an internet check each time. Activating another PS4 as primary changes which console receives that device privilege.
Recovering a locked PS4 purchase
Check the purchasing account first, then confirm any PlayStation Plus subscription associated with the game. Install the latest system software, verify PlayStation service status, and restore licenses from the account settings. If the console is no longer the account’s primary PS4, reactivate it while online and test the game before going offline again.
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S: use the Home console
Attach the device license
- Connect the Xbox console and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game.
- Download the full title and let installation and updates finish.
- Open the console’s personalization settings and designate this Xbox as your Home console.
- Launch the game once while online, then sign out or disconnect to test offline startup.
Microsoft explains the licensing model as two parts: every download has a device-based license and a user-based license. The device license automatically attaches to the Home console. Other profiles using that console can therefore play content covered by the device license, even when the console is offline.
Owner account versus a roaming console
The purchasing account also carries a user license. That lets the owner use the game on another, non-Home Xbox, but the owner must follow Microsoft’s sign-in requirements and the service’s one-console-at-a-time rules. The second console does not gain the same offline access for every local user that the Home console has.
Microsoft states: “You can designate one console (excluding a cloud-based variant used for game streaming) as your ‘Home’ console, and the device license automatically attaches to it.” A cloud-based variant used for streaming cannot be selected as the Home console under that rule.
Game Pass and other subscription titles
A Game Pass download is not a permanent purchase. It remains startable only while the relevant subscription is active and the title remains available under the applicable Game Pass rules. Setting an Xbox as Home does not extend a subscription, preserve a game that has left the catalog, or convert a streamed title into an offline install.
When Xbox offline play fails
- Check that the account owning the game was used for the download.
- Confirm that this console—not another Xbox—is set as Home.
- For a subscription title, verify the subscription and catalog availability while online.
- Install console updates and launch the game once before disconnecting.
- If the owner is using a roaming console, sign in with the purchasing account and observe the one-console-at-a-time requirement.
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: load the virtual game card
Prepare a title for offline use
- Connect the Switch or Switch 2 to the internet and sign in with the Nintendo Account that purchased the software.
- Download the game completely.
- Open the system’s virtual-game-card management screen and load that title on the console.
- Start the game once while online, then disconnect and test it.
Nintendo’s support guidance says: “You can load the virtual game card on this console to play the software without an Internet connection.” The virtual game card is the console’s local entitlement for that software. If it is loaded on the intended console, the game can start without Wi‑Fi.

Nintendo also offers Online License Settings for using downloaded content on more than two consoles. That convenience changes the offline rule: when a game is not loaded as a virtual game card, Nintendo requires an active internet connection when the game starts. If reliable offline play matters, load the virtual game card on the console you will take offline instead of depending on the online-license arrangement.
Switch software that still needs internet
- Games or editions that are inherently online-only still need their servers.
- Cloud versions stream the game and therefore require an internet connection.
- Software that must verify Nintendo Switch Online membership requires internet for that verification.
- A title using Online License Settings without a loaded virtual game card requires an internet check at launch.
If the Switch asks you to connect
Reconnect, sign in to the purchasing Nintendo Account, confirm the download is complete, and load the virtual game card. If the game is being accessed through Online License Settings, either keep the console online for the launch check or switch to the virtual-game-card method before disconnecting.

What will not become playable offline
Cloud-streamed games
Streaming delivers game data from a remote service instead of storing the playable software locally. No console license switch can remove that network dependency.
Games built around online servers
A downloaded client may still need matchmaking, authentication, a persistent world, or another publisher-operated server. Console offline settings validate ownership; they do not recreate a server that is unavailable.

Subscription catalogs
A subscription can be part of the license check. When PlayStation Plus or Game Pass is inactive, or when a title leaves the applicable catalog, the download may remain on the drive but no longer launch.
Membership-verification requirements
Some Switch software checks Nintendo Switch Online membership. That check requires an internet connection even if the game files are already installed.
A pre-trip offline checklist
- Finish the download: Check the console’s download and installation queue, including updates or separate data packs needed by the game.
- Use the owner account: Sign in with the account that purchased the title and confirm the game appears in that account’s library.
- Set the device entitlement: Enable PS5 Console Sharing, activate the primary PS4, set the Xbox as Home, or load the Switch virtual game card.
- Check subscriptions: Verify PlayStation Plus, Game Pass, or Nintendo Switch Online status when the title depends on one.
- Update the console: Install pending system software while you still have a connection.
- Launch once online: Reach the game’s main menu and close it normally, allowing any first-run entitlement check to complete.
- Test the real condition: Turn off Wi‑Fi or unplug the network, sign in with the profile that will play, and launch the game.
- Fix problems before leaving: Restore PlayStation licenses, re-enable the Xbox Home setting, or reload the Nintendo virtual game card while online.
Choosing the right console when you own more than one
For a shared household console, place the device-based entitlement on the machine used by the most local players. On PS5, that means enabling Console Sharing and Offline Play there; on PS4, making it the primary PS4; on Xbox, designating it as Home; and on Switch, loading the virtual game card there.
For a personal second console, expect stricter behavior. PlayStation permits only one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play at a time. Xbox gives the Home console the device license while the owner can use a user license on a roaming console under Microsoft’s sign-in and one-console-at-a-time rules. Nintendo’s multi-console Online License Settings are more dependent on an internet launch check unless the virtual game card is loaded on the console being used offline.
Fast diagnosis by symptom
The game icon has a padlock on PlayStation
Use the purchasing account, check the relevant PlayStation Plus entitlement, verify service status and system software, restore licenses, and confirm the console’s offline or primary activation.
The owner can play on Xbox but another profile cannot
The console is probably not the Home console. Set it as Home while signed in with the owning account, then test the other profile offline.
Switch launches only after an internet check
The title may not be loaded as a virtual game card, or it may be using Online License Settings. Load the virtual game card while connected, then test again.
A game worked yesterday but now reports no entitlement
Reconnect and check for a changed device designation, an expired subscription, a catalog removal, a service outage, or a system update that has not been installed. Re-establish the platform’s offline setting and launch once online before disconnecting.

The practical rule
Offline digital play is reliable when three conditions are true: the complete game is installed, the platform has attached its device or virtual-card entitlement to this console, and the game’s own services or subscription do not require a live check. Set those conditions before you lose connectivity, and test by launching with the network disabled—not merely by seeing the game icon in your library.
