Sometimes you can keep playing, but there is no universal workaround. If a game only loses matchmaking, its campaign, local multiplayer, or LAN mode may continue. If an authentication server is required at launch, the client can stop working entirely. Your practical options are to verify the shutdown scope, launch the installed or redownloaded game without signing in, use supported local or peer-to-peer modes, and treat private-server software as both title-specific and legally sensitive.
What happens when a game’s online servers shut down?
“Server shutdown” can describe several different changes. A publisher may stop matchmaking while leaving the game executable and single-player content intact. It may disable community features, rankings, cloud saves, or downloadable content. In the most restrictive case, an external authentication service no longer confirms that you own the game, so the client refuses to start even when all of its local files are present.

The U.S. Federal Register’s 2015 video-game rulemaking drew the same distinction: losing authentication can make an entire game unplayable, while losing matchmaking may remove only online multiplayer. Do not assume that a shutdown notice means every mode disappears, and do not assume that an installed copy will launch forever.
Can I still play the game offline?
Check the publisher’s notice for the exact end date, platform, edition, and functions being removed. PlayStation shutdown notices sometimes say that multiplayer and community features will end while offline modes or limited single-player functionality remain. Electronic Arts says that, in some instances, a game whose online services are no longer available or supported may still be played offline. A 2K support notice published on July 31, 2025, likewise explained that older purchased games could still be redownloaded and played in offline modes after their servers were retired.

Those statements are examples, not a guarantee for every title. The decisive test is whether the client can complete its startup checks without contacting a server.
Test an installed copy before the cutoff
- Install the latest official patch while the service is still operating.
- Start the game while connected, then sign out of optional online accounts inside the game.
- Close the game completely and disable the device’s network connection. On a console, use its network settings; on a PC, disconnect Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet.
- Launch the game and test the campaign, saved games, local multiplayer, settings, and any downloadable content you rely on.
- Record what works without a connection. A successful test is stronger evidence than a store description, but a later patch or license change could still alter behavior.
Some games cache an entitlement temporarily and appear to work offline for a limited period. Repeat the test after a full reboot and after the cached period has expired if the publisher documents one. Never delete a working installation merely to “start fresh” before you have confirmed that redownloading will remain possible.
How to determine what the shutdown removes
Read the shutdown notice line by line
Look for separate dates for sales, downloads, account services, and gameplay. A notice may stop new purchases first, then disable online functions weeks or months later. Note whether the change applies to PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, mobile, or a specific regional edition. Also check whether the publisher promises an offline patch, removes a digital license check, or says that no offline mode is supported.

An authentication service answers, “Is this copy allowed to run?” A matchmaking service answers, “Which players should be connected?” If an error appears before the title screen, authentication is the likely dependency. If the campaign loads but a lobby search times out, matchmaking is the problem. A game can use both services, so test startup and multiplayer separately.
Check ownership and redownload rights
Keep the account that purchased the game, its receipts, product keys, and any physical disc or cartridge. Microsoft says purchased Xbox 360 games remain playable after the Xbox 360 store closes, although online multiplayer continues only while each publisher supports its servers. That distinction applies broadly: a storefront closure does not automatically revoke a purchase, but it can make recovery harder if you uninstall the client.

Supported ways to keep playing
Offline campaign or solo modes
Many games package their campaign, tutorials, bot matches, and local progression in the client. Launching them without a network is the safest option because it uses the publisher’s intended code and does not recreate a service that has ended. Expect cloud saves, cross-device progression, online inventories, seasonal content, and server-hosted statistics to be unavailable.
Local multiplayer and split-screen
Connect controllers to the same console or computer and choose the local, couch, versus, or split-screen menu. Some titles require every player to create a local profile; others let guest profiles join. Test the maximum number of players and whether downloadable maps are stored locally. If a game previously required an online account for each participant, local play may not survive the shutdown.

A LAN mode lets devices on the same home network discover one another without a publisher matchmaking service. Use the game’s documented LAN menu, ensure every device runs the same version, and allow the executable through the operating system firewall. If discovery fails, try the host’s local IP address when the game offers a direct-connect field. Do not expose a LAN service directly to the public internet unless the publisher explicitly supports that configuration.
Direct peer-to-peer connections
Some publishers replace a central lobby with a peer-to-peer update, direct IP connection, or invite system. This can preserve multiplayer only when the title still has a supported way to locate and authenticate peers. A virtual private network may connect two computers, but it cannot manufacture a missing entitlement server and is not a universal fix.
Publisher-provided community hosting
A few publishers release server binaries, protocol documentation, or an authorized community platform. Signal Spike Games describes community hosting, peer-to-peer, LAN, local, and offline play as possible aftercare models and notes that “a server shutdown will not erase the game.” Use only the package and terms published for that specific title. Verify the supported game version, operating system, ports, database requirements, moderation tools, and whether the host may charge money.

Can I use a private server?
Only when the game’s publisher documents or authorizes that route, or when you have obtained a clearly licensed server package. A private server is not simply a spare computer running the game: it may require proprietary binaries, authentication keys, database schemas, client patches, and permission to distribute modified files.

- Does the publisher provide an official dedicated-server download or authorize a named community platform?
- Does the client support a server address, LAN discovery, or a documented configuration file?
- Are the server files licensed for noncommercial use, and may you redistribute them?
- Will a client modification bypass an access control, alter other players’ accounts, or violate the game’s contract?
- Can you protect players from malware, credential theft, griefing, and unmoderated content?
Do not download “cracked” clients or random server launchers that ask for your store password. They can contain malware, steal session tokens, or alter save files. Rockstar Games’ customer-support guidance, updated April 22, 2024, warns that developing software for or hosting unauthorized servers can expose the operator to legal action by Take-Two Interactive. That warning is title-specific evidence of risk, not a statement that every private server is unlawful; the publisher’s license and the law where you live control the result.
Is bypassing the login legal?
In the United States, 37 C.F.R. § 201.40 creates a narrow exemption for a person who lawfully acquired a complete game and circumvents an access control after the external authentication server has ceased support, solely to restore personal local gameplay on a PC or console. “Ceased to provide access” means the provider has affirmatively announced the end of support or has discontinued support for at least six months, provided support has not been restored.
This is not a blanket permission to recreate online multiplayer, distribute a bypass, remove other protections, or use a copy you did not lawfully acquire. The exemption is limited to personal local gameplay. Separate preservation provisions cover eligible libraries, archives, and museums; the activity must be noncommercial and is generally confined to the institution’s premises.
U.S. rules do not automatically apply elsewhere. Your country’s copyright and anti-circumvention law, the platform license, the game’s end-user agreement, and any server-hosting terms can impose different limits. If you plan to publish a patch, host a public service, charge players, or modify network security, obtain advice from a lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction rather than treating this exemption as universal legal advice.

Prepare before the shutdown date
Preserve a working installation
- Install the final official update and launch the game at least once while online.
- Back up local saves, configuration files, screenshots, replays, and legally obtained downloadable content.
- Keep the original installer, product key, disc, cartridge, or recovery image when the license permits you to do so.
- Write down the account used to purchase the game and enable the platform’s official offline mode if it offers one.
Capture settings and local requirements
Record graphics settings, controller mappings, server addresses, port numbers, and the location of save files. If local multiplayer requires a particular map pack or expansion, install and test it now. Keep a copy of the game’s manual and official support notice so you know which features were promised to remain.
Plan for hardware changes
Offline play can fail after an operating-system update, console replacement, storage failure, or DRM revalidation. Maintain at least one tested device with compatible drivers. For a PC, document the operating-system version and graphics runtime that worked; for a console, avoid factory-resetting the system until you have confirmed that the account can redownload the game.

The game will not start
- Read the exact error. “Unable to connect to matchmaking” is different from “ownership cannot be verified.”
- Launch with the device offline. If the game works only online, the authentication dependency is still active.
- Check for an official offline patch, compatibility update, or support article for your platform and edition.
- Restore the backed-up installation rather than downloading an untrusted executable.
- If you lawfully own a complete copy in the United States, compare your situation with the narrow conditions in 37 C.F.R. § 201.40 before considering any circumvention. Do not distribute a bypass or use it to recreate online services.
The campaign loads but saves or content are missing
Cloud saves, rotating events, server-side inventories, and account-linked unlocks may no longer be retrievable. Search the local save directory, console storage, or a platform backup. A physical disc does not guarantee that every expansion was stored locally; downloadable content may require a still-functioning license server.
LAN or direct connection cannot find another player
- Confirm that every device has the identical game build and installed content.
- Use the same local network and disable guest-network isolation on the router.
- Allow the game through the firewall on the private-network profile.
- Enter the host’s local IP address if the title supports direct connection.
- Do not forward ports or install unofficial “fixes” until you have verified that the publisher permits that method.
A private server disconnects or behaves strangely
Check the server package’s supported client version, configuration syntax, database state, and clock settings. Keep the service isolated from your personal files, use unique administrator credentials, and monitor logs. If the package is undocumented or obtained from an unknown source, stop rather than weakening security to make it work.

Examples of realistic outcomes
A single-player game with optional online features
If the campaign starts with the network disabled and saves locally, you can normally continue after the shutdown. Expect online leaderboards, cloud saves, and account-based bonuses to vanish. Keep a tested installation and local backups.
A competitive game with mandatory authentication
If the client refuses to reach the title screen without an entitlement response, an installed copy alone is insufficient. Look for an official offline update or an authorized successor; do not assume that a VPN, emulator, or new router will help.
A co-op game with LAN support
When the central lobby closes, the built-in LAN menu may still connect players in one home network. Match versions, install the same maps, configure the firewall, and use direct IP only if the manual supports it.
A game with an authorized community host
Follow the publisher’s server package and terms exactly. Verify that the client patch, server binary, and account system are compatible, then isolate and secure the host. A community server can preserve multiplayer for its participants, but it does not restore the original publisher service.

Frequently asked questions
Will achievements or trophies still unlock offline?
It depends on the platform’s local achievement design. Some systems queue achievements until the next sign-in; others require an active service. Test with a low-value achievement before relying on offline completion, and keep local save backups.
Can I redownload a game after the store closes?
Do not assume it. Store closure policies differ by platform and title. Leave the game installed, retain the purchasing account, and review the platform’s notice while downloads are still available.
Does owning a disc guarantee offline play?
No. The disc may contain only a launcher, require a mandatory update, or depend on an external entitlement check. Test the disc with the console or PC disconnected before the shutdown.
Can an emulator or compatibility layer restore a dead service?
It may run local code on different hardware, but it cannot lawfully or technically recreate a missing authentication or matchmaking backend by itself. Use only software and game copies you are entitled to use, and check the laws and licenses that apply to you.
