Balance the audio by listening to representative sections of the complete loop, adjusting levels at their sources before fine-tuning in OBS, and checking both loudness and peaks. Matching meter bars alone will not make narration and cartoon audio sound equally loud to viewers. Test a recording of the whole mix before going live, especially across clip changes and the loudest effects.
Why narration and cartoon audio can sound uneven
Speech, music, and cartoon effects can have similar-looking levels on a meter but different perceived loudness. OBS warns that other sounds may sound louder to viewers even when they appear to match the voice on its meter. The goal is therefore not to make every meter reading identical: it is to keep the narration understandable without flattening the cartoon’s intended dynamics.

There is no single fader position or compressor preset that will reliably balance every set of recordings. Source levels, audio routing, and the material itself all matter. Use the meter as a warning and reference, then judge the result by listening to the actual stream mix.
Balance the audio in OBS, step by step
1. Listen to a representative sample
Play sections with quiet and loud narration, cartoon dialogue, music, effects, and transitions between clips. Include the loudest moments and any change in source or scene. Listen through the audio as it will reach the stream, not only to the original files.

OBS describes its meter colors as rough cues: speech may reach the upper yellow range, while gameplay or other content should sit lower; background music and effects generally remain in green. These are not universal targets or a guaranteed narration-to-cartoon balance. Use them to notice level differences, then decide by ear whether words remain clear and effects are still appropriate.
2. Set source levels before adjusting the OBS fader
Start with the playback device or application’s own volume or gain control. Check the operating-system mixer where it applies, then adjust the OBS fader if the source still needs correction. Listen both to the source early in the chain and to the signal through OBS monitoring. A monitoring device such as headphones can help, but is optional.
For a media-source loop, check the media playback and every other audio path routed into the stream. If the same audio reaches OBS through more than one route, the duplicate signal can make it unexpectedly louder. Correct the routing or source level before trying to compensate with another fader.

3. Use compression sparingly for troublesome peaks
If a narration track has occasional loud words, or cartoon effects jump sharply, modest compression on that source may reduce those peaks before final level adjustment. Listen for pumping or other audible changes, and preserve intentional shifts in cartoon dynamics.
Automatic correction cannot predict what comes next and may override deliberate changes in dynamics. The Audio Engineering Society discusses this limitation in its guidance on loudness normalization; it also notes that peak limiting is used when gain is applied by a real-time loudness controller. The available guidance does not establish validated OBS compressor settings for this particular mix, so avoid treating any threshold, ratio, attack, or release value as a universal preset.
4. Watch for clipping, not just loudness differences
OBS identifies 0 dBFS as the digital full-scale maximum; a signal above it risks clipping and distortion. Its main meter bar is a peak programme meter. The smaller moving indicator is a short-window VU-style measurement that is closer to sound pressure or loudness. Use peak hold to spot unexpectedly loud passages, but do not take a safe peak as proof that two sections will sound equally loud.

OBS’s technical explanation also identifies −20 dBFS as an alignment level and −9 dBFS as a permitted maximum level in its meter conventions. Those figures explain the meter’s conventions and margins; they are not YouTube loudness targets or required OBS settings.
Should you normalize files before looping?
Pre-normalizing finished files can help compare or prepare their average loudness; balancing sources in OBS lets you adjust them at stream time. Neither approach removes the need to listen to the complete mix. Peak control addresses brief high-level events, while integrated loudness in LUFS is more useful for comparing an entire section or file. A loudness measurement is not a substitute for checking how speech and effects work together.
Audacity’s Loudness Normalization effect lets you choose a LUFS target and defaults to −23 LUFS. Audacity describes that as the EBU R 128 broadcast target and a reasonable default for broadcast spoken word; it also notes that published streaming targets are usually a few LU higher. The European Broadcasting Union’s R 128 version 5.0, published 21 November 2023, recommends average programme loudness of −23 LUFS. Neither figure is an established YouTube Live target: YouTube’s live encoder guidance does not specify a LUFS target. Do not normalize to −23 LUFS on the assumption that YouTube requires it.

For ordinary stereo material, keep left and right channels linked during normalization. Audacity warns that normalizing them independently can change stereo balance; separate normalization is appropriate only when the channels are genuinely separate recordings.
Test the whole loop before going live
- Include the hard parts. Assemble or play a representative stretch that includes narration, cartoons, scene and clip transitions, music, and the loudest effects.
- Record and replay it. Make a test recording of a normal session in OBS, then listen back to the recording through a monitoring device or representative speakers. Check that narration remains understandable and that changes between clips do not cause surprising jumps.
- Adjust the source or route that causes the problem. If one file or source is too loud, correct it there first; if the overall level needs refinement, adjust the OBS fader. Recheck the affected transitions and peaks after each change.
- Monitor the live event. YouTube recommends testing beforehand with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream, and monitoring stream health during the event. OBS also recommends recording a normal session and listening back before going live.
A check of only the opening section can miss a later loud effect or a level change at a clip boundary. If the loop contains many different recordings, include examples from across it in the test.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends 44.1 kHz stereo audio and 128 Kbps stereo audio as advanced encoding settings, with AAC or MP3 audio codecs. These are encoding recommendations, not instructions for making narration and cartoon sounds equally loud. Changing the encoded audio settings will not fix a poor source mix.

Common problems and fixes
- Narration is hard to understand although the meters look similar: Judge perceived loudness by listening to the stream mix. Raise or otherwise correct the narration source as needed, or reduce masking material; do not rely on matching meter bars.
- The level jumps when the loop changes clips: Test the transition and compare the source levels. Correct an outlying file or source, then replay the transition in the complete mix.
- Effects distort or sound harsh: Check peak hold and the signal path for peaks at or above 0 dBFS. Reduce the offending source or apply restrained peak control, then listen for distortion again.
- Audio seems louder than expected after setup changes: Check whether the media audio is routed into OBS more than once, and inspect source and system volume controls before lowering unrelated sources.
- Compression makes the cartoon sound unnatural: Reduce or remove the correction. Real-time processing can interfere with intentional dynamics; there is no evidence-based universal OBS preset for this mix.
- Stereo imaging changes after file normalization: Normalize the ordinary stereo pair as linked channels rather than independently, unless the left and right channels are separate recordings.
