The most reliable way to keep loungewear in shape and color is to follow its own care label, then reduce heat, rubbing, and strain wherever the label allows. Wash suitable garments inside out on a gentle, short, cool cycle; use a fine-mesh bag for machine-washable knits or fleece; reshape wet knits and dry them flat; sort by similar colors; and keep stored clothes out of harsh sunlight. Pills that have already formed should be shaved or snipped carefully, never pulled.
No routine can stop every sign of wear. Fibers, yarn construction, fit, friction from use, and the garment’s specific finish all affect how quickly stretching, fading, or pilling appears.

Start with the garment’s care label
Care instructions are not interchangeable. A cotton jersey top, a brushed fleece set, a loose knit, and a modal-elastane lounge pant can react very differently to the same wash and dry cycle.

In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission requires covered textile apparel to state the regular care needed for ordinary use. Washing directions identify whether hand or machine washing is appropriate and give relevant temperature information; drying directions identify the permitted drying method. Those requirements apply to covered US apparel, so the sewn-in label remains the controlling instruction for the item in your hands.

- Note the maximum water temperature, cycle, bleach warning, and drying method.
- Look for instructions about ironing, steaming, softener, or laying the item flat.
- If a general tip conflicts with the label, use the label.
Brand care pages can clarify a particular fabric or product, but they are not universal tests of every loungewear textile. Treat examples below as conditional methods, not permission to override a label.
Why loungewear stretches, fades, and pills
Stretching
Stretch can come from repeated tension during wear, an overloaded washer, high agitation, or hanging a heavy wet knit. Wet yarns are especially vulnerable to distortion because the water adds weight while the structure is relaxed. A hanger can pull the shoulders, neckline, waistband, or side seams out of alignment as the garment dries.
Fading
Color loss is influenced by washing temperature, repeated abrasion, detergent chemistry, sorting, and light exposure. Dark garments rubbing against rough items can show wear at edges and high-contact areas. Direct sunlight during storage can also fade some colors; this warning is specifically given for a modal, elastane, and recycled-polyester blend, rather than as a measured rule for every fabric.
Pilling
UNIQLO Malaysia describes pilling this way: “Pilling may occur due to friction during wear and washing, causing fibres to form small balls on the surface.” Loose fibers tangle into those balls where fabric rubs against itself, a seat, a bag strap, jewelry, or another garment in the drum. Pilling is therefore affected by both how a garment is worn and how it is laundered.
A low-stress washing routine
Use this sequence only when the label allows the proposed washing method. The goal is to limit heat, agitation, and contact with rough surfaces without leaving the garment inadequately cleaned.

- Sort by similar colors. Keep darks, lights, and strong dyes in compatible groups. ARKET’s jersey guidance specifically recommends washing with similar colors.
- Close and empty the garment. Fasten zippers and hooks, tie loose cords, and remove objects from pockets so they cannot scrape the fabric.
- Turn the garment inside out. This places the visible surface inside the load and can reduce direct rubbing and color wear. Itgoes gives this advice for its cited modal, elastane, and recycled-polyester blend; it is also used in knit and fleece care guidance.
- Use a fine-mesh laundry bag when appropriate. For machine-washable knits or fleece, a properly sized, clean mesh bag can limit contact with the drum and other garments. Do not cram the item into a bag or use one if the label prohibits machine washing.
- Do not overload the washer. Clothes need room to move through water. A packed drum increases rubbing and can leave detergent or soil behind, while the extra weight can stress seams and elastic.
- Select the gentlest suitable cycle. UNIQLO recommends gentle cycles for machine-washable knits. Choose the lowest temperature consistent with the label; ARKET recommends a low temperature and short cycle for jersey when the item is suitable for that method.
- Use the label-compatible detergent routine. Measure detergent according to the product and load instructions rather than adding extra in the hope of improving cleaning. Do not assume fabric softener is harmless: Itgoes advises against softener for its specified elastane blend, while other garments may have different directions.
- Remove the load promptly. Leaving wet clothing compressed in the drum encourages creasing and lets wet weight act on the same folded areas for longer.
How to dry loungewear without losing its shape
Dry knits flat
For the specific modal, elastane, and recycled-polyester loungewear blend described by Itgoes, the instructions are to reshape the item while wet and dry it flat. The same instructions warn that hanging may stretch the garment. Lay the piece on a clean, dry towel or a ventilated flat drying surface, align the seams, and ease the waistband, cuffs, neckline, and legs back to their intended dimensions.
Do not generalize that blend-specific method to every loungewear item. Some labels permit a dryer, and some fabrics tolerate hanging better than others. The label decides.

Use a dryer only when permitted
If machine drying is allowed, use the temperature and cycle stated on the label. Lower heat generally places less thermal stress on fibers and elastic than a hotter setting, but “low” is not a substitute for a label that says to air-dry or dry flat. Remove the garment when the cycle ends and reshape it while it is still slightly warm and flexible.
Avoid accidental hanging
Do not hang a saturated knit from its shoulders, neckline, or waistband while it dries. If a label permits hanging, support the garment in the manner it specifies; otherwise, use a flat method. Once completely dry, store it folded if hanging would put prolonged tension on a knit structure.
Preventing stretch during wear and storage
- Reduce repeated rubbing against rough furniture, abrasive bag straps, hook-and-loop fasteners, and coarse accessories.
- Rotate similar lounge pieces so one garment does not receive all-day wear every day.
- Do not pull a top on or off by one cuff or the neckline; use both hands and support the fabric.
- Keep folded knits in a drawer or on a shelf rather than placing heavy items on top of them.
- Store the specified modal-elastane-recycled-polyester blend away from direct sunlight, which its instructions identify as a possible source of color fading.
- Make sure clothing is fully dry before long-term storage to avoid trapped moisture and odor.
What to do when a knit has already stretched
First identify whether the distortion is temporary or structural. A garment that is merely misshapen after washing may respond to careful reshaping; stretched-out elastic, a damaged seam, or permanently relaxed fibers may not return completely.

- Rewash or dampen the item only if its label permits that treatment.
- Place it flat and align side seams, hems, cuffs, and the neckline.
- Gently ease the fabric toward its original measurements; do not yank or twist it.
- Let it dry flat in the corrected shape.
- For a suitable knit, UNIQLO suggests gathering the stitches and applying steam to help restore shape. Treat this as a cautious suggestion: verify the label, keep the steamer from pressing directly into the fabric, and avoid high heat.
If the label prohibits water or steam, do not attempt this home recovery method. A cleaner or tailor can assess whether the shape can be restored without damaging the yarn.

Control wash conditions
Wash colored loungewear with similar shades, turn it inside out, and choose the lowest temperature and shortest suitable cycle. Cooler, gentler washing can reduce stress and surface rubbing, but it cannot make a label-approved item into a machine-washable one. If the label says hand wash, hand wash; if it says cold water, do not select warm or hot.
Limit light exposure
Keep stored garments in a drawer, cupboard, or other shaded location. Itgoes specifically warns that direct sunlight may fade colors on its cited blend. The source does not establish a percentage of fading or a universal time limit, so treat shade as a sensible precaution rather than a quantified guarantee.
Separate high-risk loads
New dark or intensely dyed pieces can transfer color. Wash them separately or with compatible dark colors until you know how they behave. Keep rough items, towels, and garments with abrasive hardware out of a delicate loungewear load when possible.
How to prevent pilling
Reduce friction while wearing
Because friction is the mechanism that forms pills, inspect where your loungewear rubs: under the arms, at the inner thighs, against a sofa arm, beneath a seat belt, or under a bag strap. Smooth rough surfaces and remove accessories that catch the fabric. If a garment is not visibly dirty or sweaty, washing it less often can reduce cumulative mechanical stress; follow normal hygiene needs and the care label.

Reduce friction in the washer
Turn suitable garments inside out, use a fine-mesh or cleaning net, avoid overloading, and select a gentle cycle. UNIQLO’s knit and fleece guidance uses these measures for machine-washable items. Keep zippers, buckles, and coarse fabrics from rubbing directly against delicate surfaces.
Recognize unavoidable wear
Pilling is not proof that a garment was washed incorrectly. A soft, loosely spun, or frequently rubbed fabric may pill even with careful care. The practical objective is to slow new pills and remove existing ones without thinning the base fabric.
Safe ways to remove existing pills
- Wash and dry the item first according to its label. Removing pills from a clean, dry, stable surface is easier and avoids cutting around wet folds.
- Lay the garment flat. Smooth the area without stretching it over a knee or hanger.
- Use a fabric shaver or small scissors. A fabric shaver should glide lightly over the surface. With scissors, lift only the pill and snip the protruding fiber, keeping the blades away from the knit.
- Work in small sections. Check the surface after each pass rather than repeatedly shaving one spot.
- Stop before the fabric looks thin. UNIQLO warns that over-trimming can thin fabric over time.
Never pull pills by hand. Pulling can draw sound fibers out of the fabric and create a larger weak point. Do not cut the base yarn, scrape aggressively, or use a razor unless the garment maker explicitly approves that method.

Troubleshooting common care mistakes
The shoulders or neckline grew after washing
Check whether the garment was hung while wet or dried at a higher temperature than permitted. Re-wet and reshape only if the label allows it, then dry flat. If the distortion remains, the fibers or elastic may have been permanently relaxed.
Dark colors look dull after a few washes
Review sorting, inside-out washing, temperature, and exposure to direct sunlight. Switch to a shorter, cooler, label-approved cycle and keep storage shaded. Do not expect these changes to reverse dye loss that has already occurred.

Pills appeared after one or two wears
Inspect contact points and accessories for roughness, then reduce rubbing during wear. For the next wash, turn the item inside out, use a suitable mesh bag, avoid a crowded drum, and select a gentle cycle. Remove current pills carefully rather than pulling them.
The care label is missing or unreadable
Do not assume the garment can tolerate hot washing or tumble drying. Identify the fiber and construction from any remaining packaging or retailer information, use the most conservative method available, and seek the maker’s written instructions. When uncertainty remains, hand washing in cool water and flat drying may still be inappropriate for some finishes, so professional advice is safer for a valuable item.

- What does this garment’s label permit?
- Is it a jersey, knit, fleece, or a stretch blend?
- Will it rub against rough fabrics, hardware, or other colors in this load?
- What is the lowest label-approved temperature and gentlest cycle?
- Should it be turned inside out or placed in a mesh bag?
- Will the drying method support the garment’s wet weight?
- Where will it dry and be stored so direct sunlight is limited?
Answering those questions consistently addresses the main causes of avoidable stretching, fading, and pilling while respecting the differences between loungewear fabrics.
