How to Keep FFmpeg Audio and Video in Sync on a YouTube Live Stream

A practical workflow for diagnosing FFmpeg audio/video sync problems on YouTube Live—without relying on a universal fix flag.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal FFmpeg flag that fixes every YouTube live-stream sync problem. First determine whether audio is consistently early or late, gradually drifts out of sync, or jumps and stutters; then check input timestamps, clock sources, and output frame-sync behavior. A fixed offset can correct a measured, stable lead or lag, but it will not fix progressive drift between independent clocks.

Diagnose the kind of sync problem first

Before changing the command, record the FFmpeg version and build, the input types, and the exact command you use. Note whether audio and video come from one file or device, or from separate sources. Then classify what you hear and see:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Constant offset: audio is consistently ahead of or behind the picture. A measured timestamp adjustment may help.
  • Progressive drift: sync is acceptable at first but worsens over time. Suspect mismatched clocks, irregular input timing, or a rate mismatch; a constant offset will not correct it.
  • Sudden jumps or stutter: look for timestamp discontinuities, reconnects, buffering, or dropped packets rather than treating it as a simple offset.
  • Only one playback path looks wrong: compare another player or monitor. The observed symptom can involve the playback path as well as the source or encoded stream.

FFplay can display audio/video synchronization drift and the selected master clock; use it to help distinguish a persistent offset from drift that grows over time. See the FFplay documentation.

Inspect timestamps before adding timing options

Check the input stream metadata and FFmpeg logs for missing, irregular, discontinuous, or non-monotonic timestamps. The relevant timestamps depend on the source and how it is captured or demuxed. Do not add -copyts, wall-clock timestamping, timestamp offsets, or asynchronous audio resampling just because sync is wrong: each changes timing assumptions, and the right choice depends on what the input is actually doing. FFmpeg documents timestamp and muxer behavior in its manual.

If audio and video are captured from independent clocks and drift progressively, investigate whether the sources can share a clock. If not, a source-specific resampling or rate correction may be needed. The correct adjustment cannot be specified without the input chain and observed timing; a generic command would risk hiding the symptom or making it worse.

Use -re only when pacing a file

When FFmpeg reads a media file that should be sent out in real time, -re can pace reads at the file’s native frame rate. It is principally useful for file inputs being used as live sources. It is not an audio/video sync repair option.

Do not apply a low read rate reflexively to a real-time capture device or live network input. FFmpeg warns that limiting read speed in those cases can cause packet loss. The manual describes -re and -readrate in its real-time input options.

Choose video frame-sync behavior for the source

FFmpeg’s -fps_mode controls output video frame timing. It is a video timing choice, not a stand-alone correction for an audio clock that is drifting independently.

It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Mode Effect When to consider it
passthrough Passes demuxer timestamps through. When you need to preserve source timestamps and they are suitable for the output.
cfr Duplicates or drops video frames to reach the requested constant frame rate. When the output needs a constant frame rate and the chosen rate is appropriate for the source.
vfr Passes timestamps through or drops frames to avoid duplicate timestamps. When variable frame timing is appropriate and duplicate timestamps need to be avoided.

A muxer may subsequently modify timestamps, so inspect the output and test the complete path rather than assuming the selected mode guarantees synchronization. The FFmpeg documentation describes these modes and timestamp behavior.

Keep YouTube delivery settings separate from sync diagnosis

YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends constant-bitrate (CBR) encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. It gives sample-rate guidance of 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. These are delivery recommendations; they do not guarantee that independently clocked sources will stay in sync.

Use settings that match your stream and the platform’s guidance, but do not change codec, bitrate, frame rate, and timing options all at once while diagnosing a drift problem. Otherwise, it becomes difficult to identify which change affected the symptom.

Test the full stream before relying on it

  1. Save a baseline. Keep the original command and note the FFmpeg build, inputs, output settings, and when the sync error appears.
  2. Check the source timing. Review stream metadata and logs for missing, irregular, discontinuous, or non-monotonic timestamps.
  3. Change one relevant setting at a time. For example, test file pacing only for a file input, or compare appropriate -fps_mode choices for the video source. Avoid speculative timestamp and resampling options.
  4. Watch and listen over time. Use FFplay’s sync display and a representative segment with speech and movement; verify whether the error stays fixed, grows, or changes suddenly.
  5. Run a YouTube test stream. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement, monitoring stream health, and reviewing event messages. Test for long enough to reveal progressive drift, not just at startup.

Common symptoms and what to check

Symptom Likely area to investigate Next step
Same lead or lag throughout A stable input or output timestamp offset. Measure the offset, then test a corresponding adjustment; confirm it remains stable over the full test.
Sync gets worse over time Independent audio/video clocks or a source rate mismatch. Check whether both sources can use a common clock; if not, investigate source-specific rate correction or resampling.
Sync jumps after a reconnect Timestamp discontinuity or input restart. Inspect logs around the reconnect and verify how the source timestamps resume before changing offsets.
Intermittent stutter or missing packets Input overload, buffering, or inappropriate read-rate limiting. Check whether -re or a low -readrate is being applied to a live input or capture device.
Only the YouTube output appears wrong Delivery configuration or the playback path. Review YouTube stream health and event messages, then compare playback and the local source.
