There is no fixed electricity cost for a 24/7 4K 60fps YouTube Live loop: it depends on the average wall power of the computer and peripherals that run it, plus your local electricity tariff. Measure the setup, then calculate daily units (kWh) = average watts × 24 ÷ 1,000. For example, a hypothetical 100 W setup uses 2.4 kWh a day, or 72 kWh in 30 days. That is an arithmetic illustration, not a typical-PC benchmark.
Calculate the electricity use from your actual setup
In India, one electricity “unit” is one kilowatt-hour (kWh). Use the average power measured at the wall for the equipment you want to include—not a component’s advertised power rating.

- Measure average wall power in watts. A plug-in electricity usage meter can measure a desktop or other plug-in setup over a representative period. Include the equipment relevant to your estimate, such as the computer, monitor, router, capture equipment, or other peripherals, and note what was included. A short measurement may miss changes in workload or operating state.
- Calculate daily energy: average watts × 24 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per day.
- Calculate 30-day energy: daily kWh × 30.
- Estimate the energy-only charge: 30-day kWh × your applicable tariff in ₹/kWh.
For a hypothetical 100 W average draw, the calculation is 100 × 24 ÷ 1,000 = 2.4 kWh per day and 2.4 × 30 = 72 kWh in 30 days. At a tariff of T rupees per kWh, the energy-only component is 72 × T rupees for that 30-day period. Actual bills can also include fixed charges, tariff slabs, taxes, and other adjustments. There is no single India-wide household tariff to apply to every viewer.

No. Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate describe the video and its data rate; they are not a measurement of the encoder’s wall power. YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance recommends 35 Mbps for 4K/2160p at 60 fps using AV1 or H.265, and 50 Mbps using H.264. It also lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant-bitrate encoding for RTMP/RTMPS.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
YouTube says it automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats for viewers, rather than requiring the creator to send a separate rendition to each viewer. The recommended bitrate still does not reveal how much power a particular computer draws while encoding. No reliable representative wall-watt figure is established for a PC, mini PC, or hardware encoder continuously performing this exact 4K60 live-loop task.
Codec choice is not a guaranteed electricity saving
Google’s YouTube HLS documentation says HEVC generally provides 25% to 50% more compression than H.264 at the same video quality. That can mean a lower bitrate, particularly for 4K, but it does not quantify encoder power savings on your hardware. Do not assume that lowering bitrate will reduce electricity by a particular amount; measure the system if power cost is the question.

- Multi-function power monitor: Our electric usage monitor can monitor the power (W), electricity(kWh), voltage(V), frequency(Hz), current(A), power factor(PF), unit price($/kWh), total cost($) of your appliances. By switching 8 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The “electricity” mode can calculate and display how much power your appliance uses. And the “total cost” mode will show how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Overload protection: When the loading power of the appliance is over the default overload threshold 1800W, the whole display with backlight and the word “OVERLOAD” will keep flashing to warn the users. Please turn off the appliance for safety concern
- Premium Material: The whole body of our energy meter is made of high-quality ABS material. It makes our home electricity usage monitor more long lasting, fireproof and anti-drop. The standard US socket and plug is suitable for all US standard appliances
- Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
- Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings
Keep creator electricity separate from viewer playback
The calculation above is for the creator-side encoder and the local equipment you choose to include. It excludes electricity used by viewers’ screens, playback devices, and networks. A 2021 USENIX study measured YouTube 360-degree video playback on a Pixel 2 connected to a power monitor; those viewer-phone measurements do not establish the draw of a desktop or dedicated encoder running continuously. See the USENIX study.
Run the loop locally or in the cloud?
A continuously running local encoder puts its measured electricity use on your home bill and requires the local equipment and connection to remain available. A cloud service changes where the loop runs; compare its price and billing term with your measured local energy cost, and also consider recovery, setup, monitoring, quality options, and how much hardware and content control you need.

Common estimation mistakes
- Treating bitrate as watts: Mbps measures data rate, not electrical power. Use a wall-power measurement for the energy calculation.
- Using a guessed “typical” PC draw: The actual figure varies by machine and workload, and no representative figure for this exact 24/7 4K60 task is established here. Measure your own setup.
- Comparing unlike setups: State whether the monitor, router, capture equipment, or other peripherals are included in the wattage.
- Calling the energy estimate the whole bill: Multiplying kWh by the applicable tariff estimates the energy-only component; bills may add other charges.
- Counting viewer-side power as creator power: The creator’s encoder load and viewers’ playback loads are separate.
- Assuming HEVC guarantees lower electricity use: Its compression benefit does not establish how much power your encoder saves. Measure rather than infer.
