You need the applicable YouTube Partner Program (YPP) access, must turn on the relevant monetization features, and need content that meets YouTube’s originality and rights rules. Qualified public livestream watch time can help toward YPP watch-hour thresholds only when the stream is not unlisted or deleted and is converted to a replay video on demand (VOD).
How a 24/7 livestream can earn money
There is no single 24/7-stream payout. A monetized live channel may earn through Watch Page ads and YouTube Premium viewing, eligible live-chat fan funding, memberships, Shopping features, and brand partnerships. Each route has its own access conditions and obligations; none guarantees a particular income.

YouTube Help states, “If your channel is monetized and monetization is turned on for your live stream, YouTube will trigger ads to serve on your content.” The same guidance cautions that ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. An encoder or other production equipment can help you send a stream, but it does not qualify a channel for YPP.
Meet the right YPP threshold
As of October 3, 2026, YouTube describes two relevant YPP stages. Availability depends on country or region, and meeting a numerical threshold is not automatic acceptance: YouTube reviews the channel and other entry requirements. Check the Earn area in YouTube Studio and the current official eligibility pages before planning around a threshold.

Both paths also have other conditions. YouTube lists, among them, living in a YPP-available country or region, no active Community Guidelines strikes, two-step verification, access to advanced features, and an AdSense for YouTube account linked or ready to set up. Read YouTube’s YPP overview and eligibility and the expanded YPP overview for current details. Thresholds and feature availability can change.
Make eligible livestream hours count
YouTube excludes livestreams from qualified watch hours if they are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD. If your YPP plan depends on live watch time, keep the stream public and preserve its replay as a video on demand. A long broadcast is not a shortcut: only watch time that qualifies under YouTube’s rules contributes to the threshold.
Turn on livestream ads and choose mid-rolls
Once eligible, enable monetization for the stream in YouTube Studio and choose how to handle mid-roll ads. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically on when livestream monetization is on; for mid-rolls, creators can use automatic, scheduled, or manual insertion. YouTube recommends automatic placement, but no placement method ensures an ad will serve.

Compare the viewer experience as well as revenue potential. A break can interrupt music, a lesson, a meditation session, or a long-form event. For a stream with natural pauses, planned breaks may fit; for a largely unattended schedule, automatic placement reduces operational work. Eligible ad opportunities can still go unfilled. Make the content original, rights-cleared, and reviewable
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams as well as Shorts and long-form videos. Its July 15, 2025 policy note renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content has always been ineligible under the requirement for original, authentic work. Reviewers may consider the channel as a whole, including its main theme, newest and most-viewed uploads, the videos responsible for the greatest share of watch time, metadata, and About section. Show what your channel contributes
Make the stream’s original value clear to viewers and reviewers. Depending on the format, that might mean live camera work or gameplay with commentary, distinct programming blocks, educational context, active hosting, or a clearly licensed and meaningfully curated feed. These are practical editorial approaches, not YouTube safe harbors. Changing a title or overlay, or looping a playlist, does not by itself make reused material eligible.
Clear rights for everything broadcast
YouTube’s livestream terms require the creator to hold necessary rights to live content worldwide, including music rights, and to comply with applicable laws and rules. For a music or ambient stream, use material for which you have the necessary rights. A subscription that lets you listen to third-party music does not, by itself, establish that you can rebroadcast it on YouTube. See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

Plan a 24/7 operation without confusing uptime with monetization
For a do-it-yourself broadcast, YouTube supports starting a live stream with an encoder. Choose a suitable hardware video encoder or software workflow based on your existing capture and production setup; it is optional production equipment, not a YPP requirement. A continuous stream also needs an operating plan for content rotation, monitoring, rights, replays, and interruptions. Keep the YouTube stream key private, and use YouTube Studio’s live controls to manage the broadcast and monetization.
- Decide how the live program remains meaningfully original over time, rather than relying on an unchanging reused loop.
- Confirm that every audio and video element is cleared for the intended YouTube broadcast.
- Choose a mid-roll approach that suits both the program’s natural breaks and the amount of human oversight available.
- Keep eligible broadcasts public and preserve their VOD replays if watch hours are part of your YPP plan.
- Review monetization status and live analytics in YouTube Studio; treat revenue as variable rather than assuming every hour or viewer produces income.
