In desktop Excel, select the cells, press Ctrl+1, choose Custom, enter 0.00, and select OK. The value stays numeric; only its display changes.
Apply a two-decimal format in desktop Excel
- Select the cells whose numbers should show two decimal places.
- Press Ctrl+1 to open Format Cells.
- Choose the Number tab, then select Custom.
- In the Type box, enter
0.00. - Select OK. A value such as
1.2should now appear as1.20.
The format applies to the selected cells, so selecting the wrong range—or entering the code as cell content—will not change the display of the intended numbers. See Microsoft’s instructions for creating a custom number format.

Why 0.00 keeps the final zero
In a custom number format, 0 is a required digit placeholder. It displays a zero when the number has no digit in that position. Therefore, 0.00 requires two digits after the decimal separator: a numeric value of 8.9 displays as 8.90. Microsoft’s custom number format guidelines explain the placeholders and format behavior.

A format such as 0.## allows up to two decimal places but does not require insignificant trailing zeros, so it will not consistently show a second decimal place.

A format with fewer decimal placeholders rounds the number as displayed to that precision. Number formatting does not, by itself, change the underlying stored value.
Keep the result numeric, or make formatted text
For ordinary spreadsheets, use the cell format. The cell remains a number that can be used in calculations, sorting, and formulas, while Excel displays two decimal places.

Use =TEXT(A1,"0.00") in a separate cell only when you specifically need a text string with two decimal places—for example, to build a label. Microsoft’s TEXT function documentation notes that the function returns text, which can make later calculations harder. Keep the original numeric cell for calculations.
If the custom format is unavailable or behaves unexpectedly
Excel for the web
Microsoft’s custom-format instructions say that custom formats cannot be created in Excel for the web. Open the workbook in the desktop Excel application to create 0.00.

Decimal separators and regional settings
Your computer’s language and regional settings can affect decimal and thousands separators and which default formats are available. If Excel does not accept the format as expected, use the decimal separator appropriate to your regional settings. Microsoft’s format guidelines cover these regional differences.
A numeric zero is a different issue
If the cell’s value is exactly zero and it is hidden, that is not a missing trailing decimal place. A custom format can hide zero values with a separate zero section—for example, 0;-0;;@—but that code hides numeric zeros; it does not force two decimal places on other values.
