Guild Group Head of Information Security Mohammad Arif says organizations need to govern not only what AI produces, but what it can access, what actions it can take, and who remains accountable.
Why connected AI changes the security equation
A standalone tool that drafts general copy has a different risk profile from an AI agent connected to customer records or internal systems. The important distinction is not simply whether a company uses AI; it is the system’s access, permissions, autonomy, and ability to affect real work.

| Deployment characteristic | Security question |
|---|---|
| General generation versus enterprise connections | Can the system access customer records, internal documents, source code, or other sensitive data? |
| Read-only access versus write or execution ability | Can it change records, run code, send messages, or trigger a workflow? |
| Limited permissions versus broad privileges | Does its access match the task, or could it reach more than it needs? |
| Human-reviewed recommendation versus autonomous action | Does a qualified person validate consequential actions before they take effect? |
| Single provider versus a chain of services | Which models, APIs, datasets, plugins, orchestration layers, and embedded SaaS features handle the data? |
These are practical ways to assess exposure, not a product benchmark or a guarantee of security. Arif’s central point is that security has to cover the full operating model around AI, rather than focusing only on the model’s answer. The Cyber Express published its interview with Arif on August 20, 2026; its account presents his views and recommendations, not an independent technical evaluation.

Employees may paste customer details, source code, contracts, business plans, incident information, or other internal context into tools that the organization has not approved. This is often called shadow AI: use that happens outside established oversight.

Turning off model training does not, by itself, answer every data-handling question. Arif advises organizations to examine the tool’s retention practices, who can access submitted information, where it is processed, what logging exists, and what the vendor’s contract says. The organization should also decide which data categories may be used with which tools and settings.
Risks extend beyond the model
Enterprise AI can depend on multiple external components: models, APIs, datasets, plugins, orchestration systems, vector databases, coding tools, and AI features embedded in ordinary business software. Each connection may create a dependency or a route through which information or actions can flow.

- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Arif recommends bringing these components into vendor and supply-chain assurance. That means asking what data each service handles, what access it receives, how it is monitored, and how the organization would respond if a component or integration behaved unexpectedly. AI-related dependencies should be considered in procurement and ongoing vendor reviews, not only when a tool is first adopted.
How to reduce risk without treating all AI alike
Set rules for approved tools and use cases
Establish practical governance that explains which tools are approved, what kinds of work they may support, which information can be entered, and when human oversight is required. Assign accountability across the teams responsible for technology, security, data, privacy, legal, risk, procurement, HR, and business operations.

- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- USB TYPE C Connectivity & DONGLE Design: Designed for PCs, Macs, laptops, iPhones, and Android devices that utilize a USB-C port. Plug and stay, or carry it on a keychain. (Item Size: 0.73 x 0.60 x 0.30 inches)
- Enhanced MFA (FIDO2 & TOTP/HOTP): Strengthen your security with flexible options. Use the Manager App to access TOTP/HOTP features for accounts that do not yet support FIDO2.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID. NFC functionality is not supported.
Match access to the task
Apply identity and access controls to AI agents, service accounts, APIs, and workflows just as carefully as to people and conventional software. Avoid excess permissions. Give an agent only the access needed for its defined task, and consider whether it needs to read information, change it, execute code, or trigger actions at all.
Build AI scenarios into existing security work
Arif recommends extending familiar controls rather than treating AI as a separate security universe. Include AI-specific scenarios in threat modelling and secure development; log and monitor prompts, outputs, integrations, and agent activity where appropriate; and prepare incident-response processes for prompt injection, unexpected behavior, or misuse of connected tools. Staff awareness should cover the risk of entering sensitive information into unapproved services.

Require independent checks for consequential actions
AI can help summarize information, spot patterns, or recommend a next step. For high-impact decisions—especially those that are difficult to reverse or affect customers, employees, or critical operations—qualified people should review and validate the decision. Arif also advises independent verification for sensitive approvals such as payments, bank-detail changes, privileged access, sensitive transfers, and executive instructions. Do not rely on a single communication channel as proof that a request is genuine.

Why convincing deception deserves attention
Arif expects AI to make phishing, impersonation, business email compromise, and executive fraud cheaper and more convincing. That is an expert’s assessment of practical risk, not a measured incident trend or a quantified forecast in the interview. His recommended response is procedural as well as technical: use strong, independent verification before acting on high-risk requests, even when the message appears plausible or comes through a familiar channel.

Keep accountability with people
AI can assist with analysis, but organizations remain responsible for deciding what systems may do and how their outputs are used. Arif’s advice is to retain human accountability for decisions with significant consequences, and to make responsibilities clear across the functions that approve, deploy, monitor, and use AI.
As Arif puts it: “AI adoption without governance is not innovation — it is unmanaged risk. The next phase of enterprise security is about controlling what AI can access, what it can do, and who remains accountable.”
The interview offers practical guidance, not a formal standard, a guarantee that a checklist will secure an organization, or statistical evidence about incident frequency. Its most useful takeaway is a decision rule: the more sensitive the data, powerful the permissions, and autonomous the action, the more explicit the governance, monitoring, and human review need to be.
