If your Samsung tablet is frozen and won’t respond, hold the Power/Side button and Volume down together to force a restart. If it is only showing its lock screen and still responds, that restart shortcut does not unlock it—and Samsung’s cited instructions do not establish a way to power off a responsive, locked tablet without using its on-screen controls.
First, tell a locked screen from a frozen tablet
A lock screen that responds to touch or buttons is different from a screen that has stopped responding. Samsung’s button-hold instructions address a frozen or unresponsive device; they are not a method for bypassing a PIN, password, or other screen lock. If the tablet responds, use the on-screen power menu if you can access it. Menu access varies by model and software, and Samsung’s cited troubleshooting does not specify a button combination for fully powering off a responsive tablet while it remains locked. Force-restart an unresponsive Galaxy tablet
- Press and hold Power/Side and Volume down together. On Samsung US’s troubleshooting page, the hold may take up to 60 seconds. Samsung UK’s Galaxy Tab guidance says to hold Power and Volume down for more than seven seconds. The device may restart rather than remain powered off. Samsung US; Samsung UK
- If Maintenance Boot Mode appears, choose Normal Boot. Use the volume keys to highlight Normal Boot, then select it with Power or Bixby, as applicable to the device. Samsung US
- If the button combination does not work on a frozen Galaxy Tab, try the longer Power hold. Samsung UK says to hold Power for up to two minutes to shut it down. Once it switches off, wait one minute, then press Power to turn it on. This is a shutdown fallback for the frozen-device case, not a way to clear the screen lock. Samsung UK
If the tablet still will not turn off
- Remove the case if it may be obstructing the buttons, then try the button hold again. Samsung US recommends contacting support or service if the device continues to fail. Samsung US
- If the tablet appears to have run out of charge and button attempts fail, Samsung UK suggests letting the battery run out, then charging for 30 minutes before trying again. Follow guidance for your specific model and connector; Samsung Gulf’s related troubleshooting recommends a genuine Samsung charger and USB cable. - If it remains unresponsive or cannot be powered off, contact Samsung Support or a service center. The cited guidance does not establish factory reset as the next step, so do not reset the tablet merely to address this button problem.
What to expect after restarting
A forced restart does not remove the screen lock. After reboot, you may need to enter your backup PIN or password, even if you normally unlock with biometrics. Samsung’s South Africa instructions make a data-preservation statement specifically for the Tab S3: “This will turn your device off and back on without affecting any data stored on the device.” That statement is scoped to the model-specific Tab S3 guidance, not a guarantee for every Galaxy tablet.
