How to Keep Emergency Savings Accessible During a Banking Crisis

Verify federal deposit insurance, understand coverage limits, and plan alternate ways to access emergency savings if a bank fails or its services go down.

To protect emergency savings, verify that your bank or credit union is federally insured, keep balances within the applicable deposit-insurance limits, and maintain more than one workable way to reach money. These steps address two different risks: insurance can protect eligible deposits if an institution fails, but it cannot prevent a temporary app, card, phone, ATM, or branch outage from interrupting access.

Start by confirming your institution is insured

Deposit insurance applies only to qualifying deposits at an insured institution. Check a bank with the FDIC’s BankFind and review its deposit-insurance guidance. For a credit union, confirm federal coverage through the NCUA’s locator and use its Share Insurance Estimator. Do not assume that every credit union has federal backing: some state-chartered credit unions use private insurers, whose coverage is not backed by the federal government.

Coverage is automatic for eligible deposits at insured institutions, but the amount depends on the account type, ownership category, and combined balance. If your accounts have multiple owners or legal structures, use the relevant agency’s estimator rather than relying on the account names alone.

Know what the $250,000 limit means

FDIC-insured banks

The FDIC’s standard coverage is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each ownership category. The limit is based on the insured bank, not the branch: deposits in the same ownership category at different branches of one bank are added together. Deposits at separately chartered insured banks are treated separately. Different ownership categories may qualify for separate coverage, but only when their requirements are met. Use the FDIC Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator to check your own account structure. The FDIC last updated its consumer explanation of the standard amount on April 1, 2024.

Federally insured credit unions

The NCUA’s National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund generally covers individual accounts up to $250,000 per member-owner at a federally insured credit union, subject to ownership rules. Joint accounts and other categories are calculated under their own rules, so check the NCUA Share Insurance Estimator rather than applying the individual-account limit to every account. The NCUA’s coverage page was checked October 7, 2026.

What deposit insurance does not cover

FDIC insurance covers eligible bank deposits, including checking, savings, money market deposit accounts, and time deposits. It does not insure stocks, bonds, mutual funds, crypto assets, life insurance, annuities, municipal securities, safe-deposit-box contents, or Treasury bills, bonds, and notes. Those products or assets are not substitutes for insured bank deposits when the goal is FDIC deposit protection. See the FDIC’s Your Insured Deposits guide.

Plan separately for a bank failure and a service outage

If an insured bank fails

When a bank fails, the FDIC commonly arranges for a healthy bank to assume insured deposits. If there is no acquiring bank, the FDIC pays insured depositors directly. The agency states that it aims to make deposit-insurance payments within two business days, though accounts needing additional documentation can take longer. This is protection against covered loss—not a promise of uninterrupted access in every circumstance. Details are on the FDIC’s Payment to Depositors page.

If an app, card, or other service is down

A technical outage is not the same as a bank failure. Your funds may remain protected while a particular way of using them is temporarily unavailable. The CFPB recommends contacting your institution, trying other access routes, checking whether scheduled payments are still being processed, asking about fees caused by the outage, and watching for impersonation scams. Potential alternatives include checks, the mobile app, phone service, an ATM, or an in-person withdrawal; what works depends on the outage and the institution’s available channels. See the CFPB’s outage guidance.

Build a backup plan you can actually use

Choose access routes based on what could fail and what your institution supports. Multiple channels are useful options, but they do not guarantee resilience: several may rely on the same institution or underlying systems.

  • Check the account’s available channels. Find out how to contact the institution, withdraw cash, and make payments if its app or website is unavailable.
  • Keep a usable alternative in mind. If you rely on a card or app, determine whether phone service, an ATM, a branch, or checks could work in the same scenario. Do not assume an alternative is available without checking the account and institution.
  • Review automatic payments. During an outage, confirm whether scheduled bills and transfers are still processing so you can respond to a missed or delayed payment.
  • Ask about outage-related fees. If a disruption causes a fee, contact the institution and ask whether it can be reversed.
  • Protect account details. Be wary of unexpected calls, texts, or emails asking for passwords, verification codes, or other sensitive information while people are concerned about access.

There is no universal cash-at-home amount established for this situation. Any amount kept outside an account is a personal decision, not a substitute for checking insurance coverage or planning practical account access.

Do not treat a check as guaranteed immediate cash

Checks can be one backup payment method, but they have limits. A different bank or credit union generally is not required to cash a check for someone who is not its customer. And an institution can extend the time before deposited funds are available during an unexpected outage or emergency. A check deposit therefore is not guaranteed to provide immediate liquidity. The CFPB explains these limits in its guidance on cashing checks at other institutions and deposit holds.
