The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a single-player adventure available for the original Nintendo Switch in physical and digital formats. Before buying, decide whether you want only the base game or the optional Expansion Pass, and whether you need the original Switch release or the Switch 2 Edition. The Switch 2 Edition adds technical improvements but does not include the Expansion Pass.
Which version should you buy?
| Your situation | Option to consider | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| You have a Nintendo Switch and want to play | Original Switch base game, physical or digital | Nintendo lists the original game as supported on Switch 2 as well. Check your local store or retailer for current price and availability. Nintendo’s game page |
| You want the game and its added story and challenge content | Base-game bundle with the Expansion Pass | The bundle combines the base game with the Expansion Pass; check whether it is offered in your region and compare current pricing with buying the items separately. Nintendo’s bundle page |
| You already own the game and have a Switch 2 | Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack | The upgrade requires the base game. Nintendo says active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can access it at no additional cost; check current membership terms and account-region eligibility. Nintendo’s upgrade-pack information |
| You want the Switch 2 Edition | Switch 2 Edition | It is playable only on Switch 2 and does not include Expansion Pass content. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition page |
For any option, verify four things before checkout: console compatibility, physical or digital format, whether the Expansion Pass is included, and whether you need the base game or already have it. Prices, stock, and regional editions can change; do not assume a listed promotion is still active.
