A single write authority with asynchronous replicas is often simpler and faster for local writes, but replicas can lag. Synchronous cross-datacenter replication can provide stronger commit guarantees, but remote coordination adds latency and a network partition can prevent writes. If multiple datacenters accept writes, decide explicitly how conflicting updates are detected and resolved.
Decide what “consistent” must mean for your application
Replication copies data between sites; consistency describes what clients are allowed to observe and when a write counts as committed. Those are related but not interchangeable. Before selecting a database setting, identify the behaviors the application actually needs.
- Read-your-writes: after a client successfully changes a record, its later reads must show that change.
- Monotonic reads: a client should not see a newer version and then later see an older one.
- One globally ordered history: all clients must observe operations in an order consistent with the system’s rules. This is important for operations such as allocating a unique resource or enforcing a global balance constraint.
- Eventual convergence: temporary differences between sites are acceptable if replicas converge after communication is restored and conflicts are handled.
These guarantees can be different for different data and operations. A user profile may tolerate a brief delay in appearing at another site, while a transaction that must not spend the same funds twice may require stronger coordination. Write down what stale reads, delayed writes, and duplicated retries would mean in each case.
Choose a replication pattern that fits the failure policy
The following are architectural patterns, not identical guarantees across all database products. Actual transaction, quorum, and failover semantics depend on the product, version, configuration, and replica placement.

| Pattern | Consistency behavior | Write latency | During a site or network failure | Main operational work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single writer with asynchronous followers | One site or authority accepts writes; followers may be behind. | Local writes usually avoid waiting for remote replicas. | A failed primary may have acknowledged changes that did not reach followers; promotion may require reconciliation. | Track replication lag, fence the old primary, and rehearse promotion and repair. |
| Multi-writer asynchronous replication | Sites can accept concurrent changes; replicas may diverge until conflicts are resolved. | Local writes can remain responsive. | Sites may continue independently while disconnected, with conflicts discovered during or after reconnection. | Define conflict rules, safe retries, and reconciliation procedures. |
| Synchronous quorum or consensus replication | Acknowledged writes follow the configured quorum or consensus commit rule. | Writes wait for remote coordination when it is on the commit path. | Writes may stop if the required quorum cannot be reached. | Place replicas deliberately and test quorum behavior under WAN delay and partitions. |
| Local quorum with cross-site replication | Local reads and writes can have a quorum guarantee while remote sites converge later; the exact guarantee is product-specific. | Local operations need not wait for a remote quorum. | Availability depends on local replica health and the product’s consistency-level semantics. | Verify what the local quorum guarantees, especially for clients that move between datacenters. |
Understand the cost of stronger cross-site commits
With synchronous replication, a write cannot be acknowledged until the required remote coordination completes. That puts WAN delay on the write path. If a partition makes the required replicas unreachable, a system that preserves the configured strong commit guarantee may refuse or stall writes rather than acknowledge them without the required quorum.
Amazon Web Services describes this as a consistency-versus-availability choice during regional partitions. Its guidance notes that asynchronous replication can lower transactional write latency, while synchronous replication increases latency and makes quorum formation relevant. PostgreSQL’s high-availability documentation likewise illustrates the performance cost synchronous replication can incur over a slow network. These are product and architecture descriptions, not universal latency measurements.

Azure Cosmos DB offers five selectable consistency models. Its global distribution documentation describes strong consistency as requiring synchronous replication across regions, with trade-offs for write latency and availability in multi-region-write arrangements. That is Cosmos DB-specific behavior; do not assume its setting names map exactly to another database’s guarantees. YugabyteDB documents synchronous Raft-based replication and the WAN latency implications for distant datacenters, another product-specific example of consensus replication.
Make write ownership and conflict handling explicit
Prefer one authority when concurrent writes are unnecessary
If the application does not need every site to accept writes, assign one write authority per record, tenant, or partition. This avoids many same-record conflicts. Define how clients reach that authority and how it is transferred during failover; a promoted site must not share authority with a disconnected old primary.

If several sites write, define the business rule for conflicts
In bidirectional asynchronous replication, two sites can update the same key before either sees the other’s change. Google Cloud’s replication guidance describes this write-write conflict risk and the need for a resolution policy. A generic last-write-wins rule can select one value, but it cannot determine whether both changes matter. Choose a policy that matches the data: for example, reject and retry, merge independent fields, retain both events for application-level processing, or designate an authority for that record.
Also make operations safe to retry. When a client times out after sending a write, it may not know whether the server committed it. Idempotency keys or equivalent deduplication help prevent a retry from applying the same logical operation twice. This is especially important where writes can be replayed during recovery.

Use quorum terminology precisely
A quorum is meaningful only in relation to the replicas, read and write levels, and failure model in use. In Apache Cassandra, the documented overlap condition for the described replica consistency levels is W + R > RF, where W is the number of replicas acknowledging a write, R the number consulted for a read, and RF the replication factor. The overlap helps ensure a read and write share a replica; it does not by itself mean every read is globally linearizable or that a remote datacenter is current.
Cassandra’s LOCAL_QUORUM can serve clients homed to one datacenter, but its guarantees are local to the selected consistency level and replica placement. Check the semantics for the Cassandra version deployed. More generally, specify whether a quorum is local or spans sites, which acknowledgements make a write durable, and what reads may return.

Design failure, recovery, and replica repair before deployment
Asynchronous replication creates a period in which an acknowledged local write may not yet exist elsewhere. If the source site fails during that window, the surviving site may be missing changes. AWS guidance calls out replay or data-store comparison as possible recovery work after disruption. Your recovery plan should identify which changes were acknowledged, which were replicated, and how to resolve any disagreement before normal writes resume.
- Define partition behavior. Decide whether a disconnected site may keep accepting writes. If it may, plan for divergence and conflict resolution. If it may not, specify which quorum retains authority and how the other site is prevented from creating a second writer.
- Set client routing and fencing rules. Document how traffic moves after a site failure and how the old primary is prevented from accepting writes after promotion.
- Preserve change history. Retain sufficient logs or equivalent records to identify and replay acknowledged changes that did not reach a surviving replica.
- Reconcile before failback. Decide how to compare, replay, or repair data before returning a recovered site to service, and ensure it cannot overwrite newer authoritative data.
- Rebuild and verify replicas. Define how lagging or damaged replicas are repaired and how operators confirm they have caught up before relying on them.
Replication is not a substitute for independent backups or recovery points: replicated deletions and logical errors can propagate to other sites. Keep a separate recovery plan for restoring data to an earlier valid state.
Instrument the replication path and test real failure cases
Monitor more than average replication delay. A low average can conceal a single old change that has not applied, and a growing repair queue can signal that replicas are falling behind.
- Replication lag, including the age of the oldest unapplied change.
- Failed, delayed, or rejected apply operations.
- Quorum health and the availability of replicas needed for commits.
- Conflict counts, resolution outcomes, and reconciliation backlog.
- Promotion, fencing, repair, and replica rebuild status.
Exercise WAN delay, site isolation, primary loss, uncertain client timeouts, promotion, failback, and replica rebuilds. Confirm not only that services return, but that writes acknowledged before and during the disruption are present or accounted for according to the application’s rules. Measure the actual network path between datacenters and set application timeouts and retry behavior to accommodate the chosen commit path; no single latency figure applies across workloads or geographies.
