Start with the handheld’s exact model and hardware revision, then verify the SSD’s physical length, interface and protocol in that model’s official specifications or service documentation. A drive that fits the slot is not necessarily electrically compatible. Power limits and physical clearance also need model-specific evidence; a charger’s wattage or the handheld’s APU power figure does not establish an SSD limit.
What to check before choosing an SSD
Compare the candidate drive with documentation for the precise handheld model and revision—not just the product family name. Work through these checks before buying:

- Length and mounting point: Confirm the M.2 form factor, such as 2230, 2242 or 2280, and whether the device has the mounting point for that length.
- Interface and protocol: Check the M.2 key and whether the slot supports NVMe or SATA. M.2 describes a form factor; it does not by itself mean a drive uses NVMe.
- PCIe support: If the manufacturer specifies a PCIe generation or lane configuration, compare it with the drive. Do not assume an undocumented configuration is supported.
- Capacity: Verify the supported capacity for the exact SKU. A capacity listed for one configuration or tested drive is not automatically a universal ceiling or guarantee for every variant.
- Clearance and thermals: Check whether the manufacturer documents single- or double-sided drive support, surrounding clearance, or thermal constraints. Do not assume a physically longer or thicker drive will fit safely.
- Power behavior: Look for an SSD power limit or explicit guidance in the handheld’s documentation. If none is stated, do not infer one from the charger rating or APU power.
Examples: M.2 size and protocol vary by handheld
These official examples show why model names and generations matter. They are not interchangeable recommendations for other handhelds.

| ROG Ally (2023) | ASUS specifies M.2 2230 PCIe 4.0 NVMe. Its service manual explicitly says the slot does not support M.2 SATA SSDs. ASUS specifications · ASUS service manual | ASUS lists a 512GB configuration; this is not a statement of a universal maximum. |
| ROG Ally X, ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X | ASUS’s October 15, 2025 upgrade guide identifies M.2 2280 drives for these named models. ASUS upgrade guide | Not stated in the cited guide. |
| Lenovo Legion Go S 8ARP1 and 8APU1 | Lenovo PSREF specifies M.2 2242 PCIe NVMe, PCIe 4.0 x4. Lenovo PSREF | PSREF lists 512GB and 1TB offerings and says supported capacity is based on tests with its current storage offerings. |
| Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 | The user guide lists M.2 2242 or 2280 slot type, while the cited PSREF configuration lists a 2242 SSD. Check the machine type model rather than treating the family page as universal. Lenovo user guide · Lenovo PSREF configuration | Lenovo says maximum supported storage can vary by configuration; the cited listing does not establish one family-wide maximum. |
How to verify the exact device and drive
- Identify the exact unit. Record the full model name, machine type or SKU, and hardware revision from the device label or system information. A similar-sounding model may use a different SSD length.
- Open the manufacturer’s documentation. Check the official specifications, service manual, or upgrade guide for slot type, length, interface, protocol and capacity. Use a configuration-specific PSREF or equivalent when available.
- Match the drive specification line by line. Confirm form factor and NVMe-versus-SATA compatibility first, then PCIe generation, capacity, mounting and any stated clearance or thermal requirements.
- Look specifically for an SSD power or thermal limit. If the documentation does not state one, the limit is not established by those materials. Consult the manufacturer rather than estimating from unrelated device power figures.
- Check the installation and recovery procedure. Read the model’s instructions before opening the handheld. Determine how you will reinstall the operating system or transfer data, and prepare the required tools.
Why charger wattage does not tell you SSD power use
A power-adapter rating describes the adapter’s output capability, not a documented allowance for the internal SSD. Likewise, a CPU or GPU power figure describes a different component or operating condition. Neither provides a safe basis for claiming that a replacement SSD is within the handheld’s power budget.

The official material cited here does not establish a replacement-SSD power ceiling across the devices listed. Check the drive manufacturer’s specifications and the handheld’s exact service documentation; where no limit is published, ask the handheld maker for guidance instead of labeling a drive low-power or compatible without evidence.

For the named ROG Ally models
ASUS’s October 15, 2025 guide recommends a fresh Windows installation. It also describes using an external SSD enclosure to clone the existing drive if you want to retain data. The enclosure needs to match the old SSD’s interface and physical format. ASUS lists a size 0 Phillips screwdriver and a thin plastic opening tool for the procedure; follow the guide for your exact model.
