How to Keep Automated Lab Experiments Safe and Prevent Equipment Damage

Keep automated experiments safe by assessing hazards before a run, selecting safeguards for the specific robot and equipment, and defining what happens when a sensor, control, or utility fails. Treat setup, programming, maintenance, and unattended operation as distinct risk conditions—not as extensions of a normal run.

Start with a risk assessment of the whole experiment

Assess the experiment and its automation together before introducing a robot or changing a protocol. OSHA’s Technical Manual guidance on robot applications calls for considering design, use, programming, operation, and maintenance. Map the materials and quantities, instruments, robot movements, utilities, work area, and people who may enter it.

Walk through the system’s intended states and foreseeable failures. Consider startup, normal cycles, sensor or control faults, loss of power or a required utility, restart after a fault, and manual intervention. Include both risks to people and damage to equipment—for example, whether the instrument documentation identifies coolant flow, ventilation, pressure, vacuum, or temperature as critical.

Use these questions to structure the review: What are the hazards? What is the worst plausible outcome? What could prevent it? What could protect people? What should happen if something goes wrong? OSHA reproduces these prompts from National Research Council laboratory recommendations; they support, but do not replace, your institution’s assessment process.

Choose safeguards for the assessed application

Safeguards should address the hazards and access patterns identified in the assessment. OSHA describes fixed guards, interlocked guards, and presence-sensing devices as possible approaches; which are suitable depends on the robot task and installation. An interlocked access gate, for example, can be arranged so that opening it stops automatic operation and restarting requires closing the gate and activating a control outside the barrier. See OSHA’s robotics safety instruction and Technical Manual.

Evaluate the safeguard in normal operation, foreseeable access, fault conditions, reset, and maintenance. Define how a stop is initiated and how restart is controlled; a sign or awareness light should not stand in for an engineered safeguard when the risk assessment calls for one. Staff need to understand how protections work and how to report a defect. OSHA’s robotics instruction also recommends periodic checks of safety-critical equipment and connections.

  • Ventilation channels allow breathability and added protection against fogging.

Plan for unattended runs and equipment failures

An unattended run needs a defined failure response, not simply a timer and a remote alert. The National Research Council’s Prudent Practices in the Laboratory says: “Interlocks are also available that shut off electrical power in the event of loss of coolant flow and are recommended for unattended operations.” That recommendation is specific to coolant-flow loss; it is not a universal interlock prescription for every device.

For each instrument, check its manufacturer documentation and consult qualified site personnel to identify which utilities or operating conditions must be monitored. Then decide what the automation should do if a fault occurs:

NoCry Anti-Fog Safety Goggles Over Glasses, Dust Eye Protection, ANSI Z87.1
  • SMOOTH FIT OVER YOUR PRESCRIPTION EYEGLASSES — Want to wear your safety goggles over eyeglasses? These safety goggles fit most prescription eyewear, so you don't have to compromise on your sight. The soft TPR frame gasket with built-in slots creates a secure seal without squeezing your eye goggles or frames.
  • CLEAR FIELD OF VIEW — Treated with our premium UltraShield coating, these goggles are 5x more fog-resistant and 2x more scratch-tough than regular safety eyewear. Also, the panoramic lens offers the widest view of any clear goggles in its class, complete with UV380 for full eye protection, so you don't have to worry about turning your head.
  • SO COMFORTABLE YOU CAN WEAR THEM ALL DAY — In addition to being adjustable, the wide, soft headband and pivoting buckles spread pressure evenly, providing a stable, comfortable feel. These safety goggles for men and women are easy to wear with hats, helmets, or ear protection, staying put even as you move through different tasks in the shop.
  • VENTED FOR SPLASH PROTECTION AND AIRFLOW — Indirect D3 and D4 vents help keep these anti fog goggles clear while sealing out splashes and fine particles; ideal as lab goggles, dust goggles, science goggles, or chemical splash goggles. During long sessions, the vents help maintain steady clarity without that stuffy, sealed-up feeling.
  • READY FOR ANYTHING — ANSI Z87.1 rated protective goggles adult built for job sites, labs, yard work, or workshops. The lens is built to withstand debris and unexpected contact while maintaining clear visibility in active shop conditions. Use them as dust goggles, work goggles, over glasses goggles, or mowing goggles.
  • Which faults must stop or interrupt the run?
  • How will each fault be detected, and what equipment should be de-energized—or kept energized for a safe shutdown?
  • Who receives an alert, and what response is expected?
  • What inspection, correction, or authorized reset is required before operation can resume?

These are practical planning questions, not a standardized checklist. The appropriate response depends on the instrument, experiment, and failure mode.

Control risk during programming, setup, and maintenance

Programming, testing, setup, adjustment, and service can expose people to risks that do not arise during an ordinary automated cycle. OSHA notes that many robot accidents occur in such non-routine conditions, including when someone is inside the robot’s working envelope. Plan safe access and specify who may perform these tasks, how the system is prevented from restarting unexpectedly, and what training is required.

Connect automation safeguards to laboratory safety practice

Automation does not replace laboratory chemical hygiene or other applicable workplace requirements. OSHA’s Appendix A to the Laboratory Standard reproduces National Research Council recommendations to identify hazards before work, select engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment controls, prepare for contingencies, train personnel, and inspect safety equipment. It also identifies moving equipment as a potential physical hazard.

For covered chemical laboratories, OSHA describes the Chemical Hygiene Plan as a written, facility-specific program addressing procedures, equipment, PPE, and work practices. The cited appendix says it should be reviewed as needed and at least annually. Confirm applicability and local requirements with your institution’s EHS office. OSHA’s laboratory safety overview notes that state-plan jurisdictions may have different or more stringent requirements. OSHA also explains that it has no single standard specifically for the robotics industry; that does not mean robot applications are unregulated. Applicable standards and local rules still matter, and current standards should be confirmed for a particular installation or modification.

Compare safeguard options before selecting one

When evaluating alternatives, compare them against the same application-specific criteria rather than choosing by product description alone:

  • Hazard addressed: Which exposure or failure mode does the option control?
  • Operating states covered: Does it protect during normal cycles, non-routine access, and unattended operation?
  • Fault and restart behavior: What does the system do when a fault occurs, and who can authorize restart?
  • Compatibility: Does it suit the robot, instrument, experiment, and laboratory environment?
  • Implementation: Who is responsible for installation, integration, and validating that the safeguard works as intended?
  • Ongoing care: What inspection, testing, or maintenance is needed?

A safety interlock switch or interlocked access gate component may be part of a solution, but a component by itself does not establish that the overall system is safe. The safeguard arrangement must fit the risk assessment and the robot system.
