Which Fallout mod manager should you choose?
Choose Vortex for a Nexus-centered workflow
If you find mods on Nexus and want the manager integrated with the site for discovery and installation, Vortex is the natural starting point. Nexus calls it “The elegant, powerful, and open-source mod manager from Nexus Mods” on its Vortex page. That description is not a guarantee that every mod or Fallout edition is supported: check the mod’s requirements and a current guide for your game.
Choose MO2 for profiles and multiple game instances
MO2 is worth considering if you want to organize your setup around profiles or manage separate game instances. Its Nexus listing describes multiple game instances and Nexus integration, while its documentation explicitly names Fallout 4. The available evidence does not establish a like-for-like comparison of every profile feature across both managers, so use a guide built for your exact game and MO2 setup.

Check support for the exact Fallout game and edition
“Fallout” covers multiple games and editions; support for one does not establish support for all. The sources cited here confirm Vortex support for Fallout: New Vegas and MO2 support for Fallout 4, but do not supply a full compatibility matrix across games, editions, storefronts, or operating systems. Verify the manager documentation and the mod’s requirements before setting up.
How do mod installation, updates, and removal differ?
Follow one manager’s installation and update workflow
Vortex’s Nexus integration is intended to connect finding mods with installing them through the manager. MO2’s Nexus listing also describes Nexus integration. Whichever you choose, use a current guide for the specific Fallout title and edition, and follow that manager’s workflow consistently rather than mixing manager-controlled steps with a guide for another setup.

Check the mod’s requirements before installing or updating it. A manager’s general game support does not by itself confirm that a particular mod works with your edition or other installed mods.

Understand what Vortex purge does
According to the Vortex project wiki, Vortex deploys mods by creating hard links between its mod install path and the game’s active files. Purging removes those links. This describes Vortex’s manager-controlled deployment; it does not establish that purge removes files you copied into the game manually or changes made outside Vortex.

Do not assume uninstalling a mod removes every trace
Removing a mod through a manager is not a guarantee that every third-party change has been removed. For Fallout 4, Bethesda Support’s clean-install guidance recommends a clean install to ensure complete removal of third-party mods. Distinguish that broader cleanup from removing a manager-controlled deployment; unmanaged files may need separate attention.

No. Nexus’s FAQ says the older manager’s foundations had become difficult to extend as desired features and standards changed. For a current setup, center your decision on the published Vortex and MO2 documentation and on a guide for your exact Fallout game, rather than treating the legacy manager as the default.
