Build a safe routine around the exact console model
Console families differ in how their vents, screens, disc mechanisms, batteries, and surfaces should be handled. Start by identifying the model and revision, then use its manufacturer manual for tasks beyond gentle exterior cleaning. Sony’s manuals directory lists PS4 and PS4 Pro as well as newer systems. Nintendo’s downloadable manuals cover systems including Wii, Wii U, DS, 3DS, GameCube, and Game Boy Advance.

- Before cleaning, turn the system off and unplug it from power. Nintendo also advises unplugging accessories before cleaning handheld systems.
- Keep ventilation openings unobstructed; place the console on a hard, smooth surface rather than carpet or inside a cramped space.
- Use a clean, soft cloth for exterior surfaces, and keep liquids out of vents and openings. Never spray liquid directly onto a console.
- Do not open the system, remove covers, clean a lens, replace a battery, or buy parts based on instructions for a different model.
Clean vents without pushing dust farther inside
Wii
Nintendo says the Wii has an internal fan and should sit on a ventilated, hard, smooth surface—not carpet. Check its vents regularly; when dusty, Nintendo says to use a vacuum cleaner’s soft-brush attachment gently. The same guidance recommends avoiding smoke, oils, air freshener, and other airborne contaminants. See Nintendo’s Wii dust guidance.

Nintendo recommends a ventilated, hard, smooth surface and four inches of space on each side of the Wii U. Avoid carpet and airborne contaminants. For dusty vents, use a vacuum’s soft-brush attachment gently, as described in Nintendo’s Wii U dust guidance.

PlayStation
The detailed PlayStation cleaning instructions available here are for PS5, not PS3 or PS4. The PS5 Safety Guide CFI-71XX says to unplug before cleaning, keep vents clear, avoid carpet and cramped spaces, and leave at least 10 cm between the console and a wall. It allows a handheld vacuum for dust buildup. These clearances and cleaning directions should not be treated as verified instructions for older PlayStation models; consult the exact model’s manual.
Other Nintendo systems
For DS, 3DS, Game Boy families, and other handhelds covered by Nintendo’s general handheld care guidance, turn the system off and unplug accessories first. Use a soft, clean cloth, such as a lens or eyeglass cloth, for smudges. Do not pour liquid on or submerge the system, and make sure it is completely dry before use.

Clean surfaces with model-specific materials
Switch family
Nintendo’s instructions for Switch systems are more specific than its general handheld advice. For basic cleaning, lightly dampen a soft, clean cloth with water, wring it out, and wipe gently. For disinfecting, Nintendo permits consumer-grade disinfectant containing about 70% alcohol, applied lightly to a soft cloth. Do not extend that disinfecting method to older Nintendo systems or other brands. Follow the full Switch cleaning and disinfecting instructions.

Nintendo also says not to disassemble or attempt to repair a Switch, its components, or its battery; keep its air vents unobstructed; and use only Nintendo-licensed AC adapters when charging. See Switch health and safety precautions.

PlayStation plastic surfaces
For the PS5 model covered by its safety guide, wipe plastic surfaces with a soft, dry cloth. Sony warns against using alcohol, paint thinner, benzene, volatile substances, insecticides, and chemically treated cloths on those surfaces. Do not assume those surface-specific cautions constitute a complete cleaning guide for PS3 or PS4; check the relevant manual.
Wii exterior, tray, buttons, and ports
Nintendo has separate instructions for different areas of the Wii. Its Wii cleaning guidance says not to use liquid on vents and specifies the vacuum’s lowest setting when removing crumbs from the disc tray. Do not improvise a lens-cleaning method: the page’s lens-cleaning recommendation does not establish a complete procedure here.

Know when to stop cleaning and seek model-specific help
If a console still has a problem after external dust and smudges are addressed, avoid escalating to opening the case or attempting an internal repair based on a general guide. Check the exact manual for the task and consult qualified repair guidance appropriate to the model and region. Service availability varies: Nintendo says it no longer accepts service requests for Wii or Wii mini, but that does not establish the service status of every older system or in every region. Its Wii cleaning page also notes that the Wii Lens Cleaning Kit is out of stock.
