For sensitive accounts or work, moving to a device with active, model-specific security support is the more durable choice.
Is it safe to use an Android phone that no longer gets security updates?
There is no single date on which every unsupported phone becomes unsafe. Risk depends on the model, its last security patch, the vulnerabilities affecting its software, how you use it, and the protections that remain available. But once the manufacturer stops supplying device security patches, newly disclosed issues may remain uncorrected on that phone.

Android’s September 2026 Security Bulletin says patch level 2026-09-01 or later addresses the issues associated with that level. That date is not a universal support deadline: the manufacturer, region, and sometimes carrier determine whether a particular phone receives a patch. The bulletin also lists CVE-2026-28666, a critical Framework elevation-of-privilege issue. Its severity assessment assumes platform and service mitigations are disabled or bypassed; it is an example of why security patches matter, not proof that every unpatched phone is exploitable in the same way. What to check before deciding what to do
Find the security patch level
- Open Settings → About phone (or the manufacturer’s equivalent) and note the Android version and Android security update date. Menu names and locations vary by phone.
- Look for the Google Play system update date in Settings, if your device shows one. Android 10 and later may receive Google Play system updates separately from full Android version upgrades and other security updates; availability varies by device.
- Open the system update screen and check for updates. Install anything offered, then check again if the phone prompts you to restart. Google’s instructions cover checking Android versions and updates, though exact steps vary by manufacturer: Check and update your Android version.
- Compare the exact phone model and regional variant with its manufacturer’s published support information, or ask the manufacturer or carrier whether security updates are still being issued. A recent Android version alone does not confirm that the device has a recent security patch.
Check whether Play Protect is on
On devices with Google Mobile Services, Google says Play Protect is enabled by default. In the Play Store, tap your profile icon, then Play Protect → Settings and check that app scanning is enabled. Google describes Play Protect as scanning apps and helping detect harmful behavior; it is not a replacement for missing manufacturer patches. See Google Play Protect help.
What to do if the phone has stopped receiving updates
Reduce avoidable exposure
- Keep Play Protect on and install app updates from Google Play when available. Be especially cautious about apps installed from outside Google Play; only install one when there is a compelling reason and you trust its source.
- Remove apps you no longer use and review which apps have access to sensitive permissions such as location, microphone, camera, and contacts. This reduces some exposure but does not repair operating-system vulnerabilities.
- Use a strong screen lock and account protections such as two-step verification where available. These help protect access to accounts, but they do not substitute for system patches.
- Keep backups current so you can recover important data if the phone is lost, damaged, or compromised.
Match use to the remaining risk
If you must keep using the phone, consider avoiding high-consequence accounts, sensitive work, or other tasks where a compromise could cause serious harm—particularly when a supported device is available. This is prudent risk management, not a guarantee that any specific phone or app is unsafe. App compatibility and security requirements vary, so do not assume that banking, password-manager, or other apps will either work or stop working solely because updates ended.

Do not treat partial protections as full support
Google describes Play Protect and Android platform defenses as ways to reduce the likelihood of successful exploitation. Android 10 and later may also receive Google Play system updates for selected components. Neither fact proves that every security issue or device-specific firmware vulnerability has been fixed. An Android version upgrade, a Play system update, or an antivirus app does not extend the manufacturer’s support commitment unless the manufacturer says so for that exact model.

Keep using the phone or replace it?

For a phone that has reached the end of manufacturer support, replacement is the durable route to receiving current manufacturer patches. Before buying, check the manufacturer’s published security-update end date for the exact model and regional variant, and confirm carrier eligibility where relevant. No particular replacement model is recommended here.

What not to assume
- A Google Play system update means the whole phone is patched. It covers only supported updates and components; it does not prove full device or firmware coverage.
- Play Protect makes an unsupported phone fully secure. It is one protective layer, not a substitute for all missing system patches.
- Every unsupported Android phone is equally vulnerable, or becomes unsafe on a universal date. Model, patch level, exposure, and use differ.
- A custom ROM is a simple fix. Device support, firmware components, bootloader state, and update reliability vary, so installing one is not a guaranteed security solution.
