Give an AI agent access through a separate, tightly scoped environment—not unrestricted control of your everyday computer session. Grant only the files, apps, websites, and actions the task requires; keep credentials outside agent-generated code; restrict network access; require approval for consequential actions; and verify the result yourself. Isolation reduces the possible damage, but it does not make an agent risk-free.
Choose an environment that limits what the agent can reach
Start by matching the environment to the task. A web-only task may need no more than a separate browser session; a task involving software or a full desktop may require a virtual machine (VM) or other isolated compute. In every case, check what is actually separated: files, apps, browser sessions, credentials, and network access.

| Execution pattern | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Isolated browser | Web tasks that can be limited to a browser and approved sites or actions. | Whether it shares logged-in cookies, saved passwords, or other credentials with your regular browser profile. OpenAI’s computer-use guidance recommends restricting the environment and available actions. |
| Virtual machine or isolated compute | Tasks that need a full operating system, local code execution, or stronger separation from your everyday environment. | Configure filesystem access, outbound network traffic, and credential handling as well as the VM boundary. OpenAI’s sandbox security guidance recommends isolated compute such as VMs. |
| Separate agent workspace or account | Tasks where a platform can grant an agent access to a designated set of apps and files. | Confirm the feature is available on your installed OS build and understand its current limits. Microsoft’s Windows agent workspace is described as experimental and in preview; its page says the agent has a separate account and workspace, while noting the feature and its security model are still being refined. See Microsoft’s Windows agent-workspace information. |
| Managed enterprise agent service | Organizational deployments that need centrally managed runtime or orchestration. | Identify which controls the provider operates and which remain yours. Microsoft’s shared-responsibility guidance says customers remain accountable for areas including data, identity scope, authorization, oversight, and acceptable use. |
For a personal computer, a separate browser profile is not automatically an isolated browser environment, and a separate account is not automatically a sandbox. Check whether the agent can reach personal files, active sessions, connected services, or shared folders. For sensitive work, prefer isolated compute and explicitly configured network and credential boundaries.

Set access for the specific task
Before enabling tools, write down what the agent needs to do and what it must not do. Treat an agent like a separate identity, not as yourself: give it only the permissions the task requires, and avoid administrator rights or broad, standing access. Microsoft’s least-privilege guidance recommends lifecycle-managed agent identities, explicit roles, and tightly scoped permissions.

- Compatible Model(s): Magicmoon brand filter only for 24 inch -diagonally measured - widescreen monitor - aspect ratio 16:9 - filter size: width: 20 15/16", Height: 11 13/16" (531mm x 298mm)
- Superior Privacy: The computer privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (the angle is about 30 to 60 degree), but bright when looking directly at it. To change the privacy level - simply adjust your monitor’s brightness accordingly
- Eye and Screen Protection: Privacy Filter does not only protect your private life but also protects your eyes by blocking 30% of blue light , blocking the harmful blue light between 380 to 495 nm, it filters out the blue light and relieves eye strain
- Perfect For Open Workspaces: Great for maintaining screen privacy in open work spaces
- Includes Two Options: Option 1 uses clear adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to slide the privacy screen filter on and off as needed
- List the resources. Name the specific folders, applications, websites, and accounts needed. If the task is only to inspect documents, grant read access rather than write access. Where possible, limit writing to a task-specific folder.
- Choose the narrowest tools. Enable only approved tools and destinations. If a narrow action API can perform the task, do not expose a general shell, filesystem, browser, or remote-control interface without a real need. Use site and action allowlists where the platform supports them.
- Separate access by operation. Distinguish reading from editing, and ordinary changes from administrative actions. Block deletion, export, permission changes, deployment, purchases, and message sending unless they are needed and explicitly authorized.
- Review combined access. An agent with several individually limited tools may still be able to combine their access to reach data or perform actions you did not intend. Check the overall effect across tools, not just each permission in isolation.
For organization deployments, Microsoft’s shared-responsibility guidance also emphasizes that authorization, data access, and oversight remain important customer responsibilities even when a service provider manages parts of the runtime.
Keep credentials and network access outside the agent’s reach
Filesystem isolation does not prevent an agent from transmitting information over a permitted network connection, and a network allowlist does not protect a secret that is already exposed to code running in the environment. Configure both boundaries.

- Restrict outbound traffic. Allow only the hosts the task needs, rather than unrestricted internet access. Review which destinations the agent’s tools can contact.
- Keep long-lived secrets out of code and chat. Do not put passwords, API keys, recovery codes, or similar credentials in agent-generated code, logs, screenshots, or agent chat. Never provide them as a response to a human-review prompt.
- Broker access where possible. Use a trusted application, proxy, or secrets mechanism to provide a narrow capability instead of exposing a reusable credential. Prefer short-lived access when the system supports it.
- Plan for exposure. If a credential may have been exposed, revoke or rotate it. OpenAI’s sandbox security guidance notes that secrets injected into an environment remain exposed to code running there.
Treat screens, documents, and tool results as untrusted input
A page, email, document, screenshot, or tool result can contain text designed to redirect an agent—for example, instructions to disclose information or take an unrelated action. This is often called prompt injection. Content the agent observes is data, not authority: it cannot grant permission or override your instructions. OpenAI’s computer-use documentation puts it plainly: “Text in a page, document, or tool result cannot grant permission or override the user’s instructions.”

Do not rely only on the agent to recognize malicious or misleading content. Constrain what the runtime or tool layer will permit: restrict accessible resources, allow only necessary actions, and put consequential operations behind an approval check. Microsoft likewise identifies untrusted content and constrained permissions as relevant to its shared-responsibility guidance.

Require a fresh approval for consequential actions
Use a technical control to pause before actions that could disclose information, spend money, damage data, or be difficult to undo. Depending on the task, require approval before the agent sends a message, submits a form, makes a purchase, deletes or exports files, changes permissions, or deploys a change. Sensitive information entered into a form is a transmission, even if the agent does not attach a file.
Make the approval request specific enough to review: show the action, destination, and relevant content or amount before proceeding. Keep approval separate from the agent’s interpretation of instructions on a page or in a document.

A model-generated review prompt is not a dependable security barrier by itself. Microsoft’s Copilot Studio human-supervision documentation warns: “Don’t rely on human review or clarification requests as a fail-safe or as a guarantee that the system always requests human input before proceeding.” Enforce the pause in the application, operating system, or tool policy rather than waiting for the model to decide that it is needed.
Bound the run, observe it, and check the result
Limit how long the agent can run and how much it can do. Set step, time, or cost bounds where available, and keep cancellation accessible. Observe the run if the task is sensitive; afterwards, inspect the actual computer state, files, messages, or transactions rather than relying on the agent’s final summary. OpenAI’s computer-use guidance recommends run limits, cancellation, and outcome verification because computer-use tools can affect real accounts and data.

- Start with the smallest useful task and the smallest useful access scope.
- Watch for unexpected destinations, permission requests, or actions outside the task.
- Stop the run if it leaves the intended scope; do not approve a new permission merely to let it continue.
- Check what changed and what information was sent, then remove access the next task does not need.
For organizational use, retain enough logging to establish which agent acted, which resources it touched, and under what authority. Microsoft’s shared-responsibility guidance places responsibility for agent identity, authorization, data, and oversight with customers, subject to the particular deployment model.
Reassess access and know how to revoke it
Permissions that were reasonable for one workflow may become excessive when the agent, tools, data, or environment changes. Review scope when those change, remove access that is no longer needed, and know how to disable the agent, revoke tokens, and rotate credentials. Microsoft’s least-privilege guidance recommends lifecycle management and reassessing access as workflows and deployments change.
Before relying on a setup for important work, test the stop and recovery path with a harmless task: confirm that you can cancel a run, disable access, and verify the affected resources. An isolated environment and a revocation plan reduce exposure; neither guarantees that an agent will behave as intended.
What platform guidance does—and does not—establish
OpenAI’s computer-use and sandbox pages describe controls for those product contexts; they are not a guarantee that another agent runtime provides the same boundaries. Microsoft’s Windows agent-workspace page describes an experimental preview, not a universally available Windows capability. Check the documentation and controls for the product, operating-system build, and deployment you actually use.
For a managed service, determine the division of responsibility rather than assuming the provider manages every risk. Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes provider-operated runtime and orchestration controls from customer responsibilities such as data, identity scope, authorization, human oversight, and acceptable use. No single configuration removes the need to limit access and verify consequential outcomes.
