To keep an OBS stream running through a power cut, back up power for the Windows PC and the modem, ONT, or router it needs, then confirm that the broadband connection stays online during an outage. Size backup power using the equipment’s measured watt load and the manufacturer’s runtime information—not the UPS’s VA number alone. A UPS can bridge a short interruption or provide time to shut down; streaming through a longer cut requires a properly sized, compatible backup-power setup, and a working internet path to YouTube.
What needs backup power for an OBS stream
A live stream depends on two separate things: electricity at your setup and a usable internet connection to YouTube. Keeping the PC on does not help if the router or fiber ONT switches off. Keeping all your equipment on still cannot guarantee service if provider-side equipment or the local network also loses power.

List the equipment that must stay on
- The Windows PC running OBS.
- The monitor, if you need it to operate or monitor the stream during the outage.
- The modem, ONT, and router required for your internet connection.
- Any audio gear, capture devices, or other equipment that requires mains power to keep the stream working.
Back up only what is necessary, but include every essential device in the load calculation. A battery-backed outlet is not the same as a surge-only outlet; check the UPS labels and manual to see which sockets provide battery power.

Measure the equipment’s real power draw under a typical streaming workload, using an appropriate power meter or reliable equipment telemetry. A PC power supply’s maximum rating is not a measurement of its usual draw. Add the watt loads of the devices that need to run together, then compare that total with the UPS’s output capacity in watts and its manufacturer-published runtime at that load.

Do not size by VA alone
VA and watts describe different capacities. Schneider Electric India recommends choosing UPS output watt capacity 20–25% above the connected load and checking runtime against the equipment connected; actual runtime varies with load. See Schneider Electric India’s UPS buying guide. Keep a sizing margin rather than planning to run at the unit’s limit.
For example, Eaton India lists its Aurora line-interactive UPS family at 600–1000 VA and 230 Vac, with applications including desktops and routers. Those family specifications do not establish the watt capacity or runtime of a particular unit for your PC. Check the exact model’s output watts, battery-backed outlets, and runtime documentation before choosing it. See the Eaton Aurora product-family specifications.

Match the backup to the outage you need to handle
- Brief interruption or controlled shutdown: A desktop UPS may be appropriate to evaluate for ride-through or enough time to end the stream and shut down cleanly. Confirm runtime at your measured load.
- Longer power cuts: Investigate a suitably designed home inverter or extended-runtime UPS. Verify supported load, output characteristics, switchover behavior, and tested runtime with manufacturer documentation and qualified local advice.
There is no single UPS capacity or runtime that can be prescribed for every streaming PC, and the available product-family ratings do not establish typical Indian outage durations. Check compatibility with your PC power supply and any existing inverter/UPS arrangement with the manufacturers or a qualified installer.
Check that your internet connection can survive the outage
Put the required modem, ONT, or router on suitable backup power and include their consumption in the total load. Then test the broadband connection during a power cut, if practical. Powered customer equipment cannot ensure that the provider’s equipment, local fiber infrastructure, or upstream service remains available; YouTube warns that network disruption can break a live stream. Use a stable upload connection and leave headroom
YouTube recommends available upload bandwidth be greater than the stream’s total bitrate, with 20% headroom recommended. Measure outbound upload rather than relying on download speed. Choose stable encoder settings for the connection you actually have; a lower bitrate can be a sensible quality trade-off on a constrained line, but it cannot repair a failed internet path.
OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of a network-path problem between the PC and the ingest server. It recommends wired networking over Wi-Fi and checking network configuration, interfering software, and ISP conditions. OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can reduce quality when the connection cannot keep up, but does not fix the underlying connection problem. Prepare OBS and YouTube Live before the event
- Set up the encoder ahead of time. Configure OBS and your YouTube event before the scheduled stream rather than waiting until you are ready to go live.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm the feed appears in YouTube Live Control Room before starting the event for viewers.
- Rehearse the real setup. Test with the usual scenes, audio, cameras, capture devices, encoder settings, upload connection, and backup-power arrangement.
- Test any backup encoder or failover plan. Do not assume a second encoder will take over correctly; test the switchover in advance if you use one.
- Check local recording and viewer access. Verify that the local archive is intact and growing, and confirm that viewers can access the event.
- Monitor stream health while live. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and the status of your power and network equipment.
YouTube recommends advance setup, preview checks, testing failover, verifying the local archive, and monitoring stream health. These steps help expose problems before an event but cannot guarantee protection from an outage. See YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips.

- The PC shut off: Recheck actual system load, UPS watt capacity, battery condition, runtime at that load, and whether the PC was plugged into a battery-backed outlet. Do not use the VA rating as a substitute for these checks.
- The PC stayed on, but OBS reports dropped frames or disconnection: Check that the router, modem, and ONT are powered and that the broadband connection is still usable. Investigate upload stability, the network path, VPN or security software, and ISP conditions; try a wired connection where possible.
- OBS appears to be sending, but viewers report problems: Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and distinguish an encoder or source issue from an outbound connection problem. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide covers checks such as encoder operation, CPU load, upload strength, and ISP support.
- A third-party encoder will not start: For certain start errors, YouTube’s troubleshooting steps include refreshing the stream key in Live Control Room. This is a startup troubleshooting step, not a routine fix for a power cut.
- A camera, capture source, or other device does not return: Check that device and its connection in OBS. Do not assume OBS will automatically restore every source after power or network disruption.
