To keep an OBS stream live around the clock from a Mac, connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream, choose settings the Mac and sustained upload connection can handle, keep the Mac powered and awake, then test and monitor the broadcast. OBS can start streaming when it launches, but that alone does not restart OBS after a crash, restore a stream after a power outage, or guarantee recovery from a network failure.
1. Create a YouTube encoder stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming configuration. YouTube’s instructions for encoder setup are at YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it or show it in a public screenshot. YouTube allows a custom key to be reused. If you suspect it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube and replace the old key in OBS.
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the available connection protocol, codec, and stream configuration: YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

2. Choose settings your Mac and connection can sustain
There is no single safe resolution or bitrate for every Mac. Choose based on measured upload capacity, the video’s resolution and frame rate, the Mac’s encoder capability, and the complexity of the OBS scene. YouTube publishes different minimum and recommended H.264 bitrates by resolution and frame rate, so use the matching row in its current table rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
- Measure sustained upload capacity. Allow headroom instead of setting the stream bitrate equal to the best speed-test result. A connection that fluctuates can cause dropped frames even if its peak upload rate looks sufficient.
- Set a supported video bitrate and encoder. YouTube’s general encoder guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR). Use the published recommendation for your chosen resolution and frame rate, while ensuring the Mac can encode that output without overload.
- Set keyframes to two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Configure audio for the chosen delivery protocol. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports AAC or MP3 audio. Check levels and listen for unwanted noise before leaving the stream unattended.
- Prefer RTMPS where supported. Follow YouTube’s current protocol instructions and use the matching server URL in OBS.
- Test realistic content. Include the motion and audio expected in the actual broadcast. A static test scene may not reveal encoder or upload problems that appear with more demanding content.
OBS notes that meeting its baseline system requirements does not ensure a particular Mac can stream successfully; workload depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard or test progressively with the actual scene and output settings. See OBS system requirements.

3. Keep the Mac powered and prevent sleep
OBS must remain running and the Mac must stay awake to keep encoding. On a MacBook, connect the power adapter and check the relevant Battery or Options settings for a control that prevents automatic sleep while the display is off. Apple notes that this option is not available on every configuration and that preventing sleep may increase power consumption. A screen turning off is not the same as the computer sleeping.
Desktop Macs have corresponding energy and sleep controls. Labels and availability vary by Mac and macOS version, so confirm the current controls in Apple’s guide to preventing a Mac from sleeping. Keep the Mac in a ventilated location and avoid changing settings that could interrupt the stream.

4. Optional: start streaming when OBS launches
OBS documents a macOS launch parameter that can start streaming as OBS opens:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchopen -a "OBS" --args --startstreaming
Use the command only after testing it with your installed OBS version and configured stream. OBS’s launch-parameter documentation explains how macOS passes arguments: OBS launch parameters.

- 6-core Intel Core i5 processor
- Intel UHD Graphics 630
- 8GB 2666MHz DDR4
- Ultrafast SSD storage
- Four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, one HDMI 2. 0 port, and two USB 3 ports
This parameter starts a stream when OBS launches; it is not a complete recovery system. The cited OBS documentation does not establish automatic relaunch after a crash, login after power is restored, or automatic resumption after YouTube loses the encoder connection. Plan those failure cases separately rather than assuming launch-on-open handles them.
5. Test the broadcast and monitor its health
- Start with an appropriate YouTube visibility setting while testing. Check that the preview appears and the intended audio and motion are present.
- Check YouTube’s stream health indicators and watch for dropped frames or warnings in OBS. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality during the broadcast; see YouTube Help: Live stream troubleshooting.
- Confirm that the YouTube watch page is accessible as intended, then switch visibility or schedule the stream according to your needs.
- Before relying on a long unattended run, test the exact Mac, scene, settings, network, and power arrangement you plan to use. Recheck after changing any of them.
If the stream stops, treat it as an incident to diagnose. Check OBS’s connection and encoder status, the internet connection, YouTube stream health, and whether the key still matches. YouTube advises checking the stream key when an encoder cannot start; reset a compromised key and update OBS with the replacement.

6. Separate a continuous broadcast from its archive
A live stream running continuously and a saved YouTube replay are different goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end; its cited guidance does not promise an archive for a stream that runs longer than 12 hours. Do not rely on a 24/7 broadcast becoming one continuous VOD. If retaining a recording matters, check YouTube’s current limits and plan a separate recording workflow, verifying that the Mac has sufficient storage and can handle the added workload.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a prerecorded video or playlist playing as a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and uploaded video streams as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and playlists to YouTube, not live camera capture. Frequently Asked Questions
Will OBS keep streaming if I close my MacBook lid?
Not unless the Mac remains awake with OBS running. Configure sleep behavior for your model and macOS version, and test the setup before leaving it unattended.
Does `–startstreaming` restart OBS after a crash?
No. It requests streaming when OBS launches; it does not by itself restart OBS after a crash or restore power and network service.
