The exact date format, timezone, and whether the end date is inclusive depend on the app; the agent must not guess them.
What you need to decide before the agent acts
Prepare the task so the agent can distinguish the dates you want from the way the app presents them. State the start and end dates explicitly. Where it matters, specify the timezone and whether both endpoints should be included; those details must come from your task requirements or the app, not from a universal date-picker rule.

- Target and access: identify the web app and use a browser session you are authorized to operate. The app may require sign-in, an access request, or user approval.
- Date range: provide unambiguous dates and any required timezone or endpoint convention.
- Evidence to capture: decide whether you need the visible screen, a particular chart or table, or the whole scrollable page.
- Output: choose a destination and image format, such as PNG, JPEG, or WebP, where the capture method supports it.
General browser automation documentation does not establish a particular app’s date format, timezone, date-picker controls, endpoint inclusivity, or whether a separate Apply button is needed. The agent must inspect the actual page.

Choose how the agent will control the browser
Structured browser automation
A browser library such as Playwright lets a script interact with page controls and capture the resulting page. This is a practical choice when the app has identifiable, stable controls and you want to repeat the same workflow. For an agent workflow, Playwright CLI snapshots can expose accessibility-tree references that subsequent commands can use: Playwright Quick Start. A reference or selector is useful only if it corresponds to the intended control; inspect the page rather than assuming a particular app structure.
Visual computer-use actions
A visual agent receives screenshots, issues mouse or keyboard actions through an application-side handler, and observes the updated screen. This can help when the interface is unfamiliar or controls are difficult to address structurally, but it requires observation between actions and depends on the relevant UI being visible. Hosted browser sessions
A hosted session can handle browser provisioning and session lifecycle, which may suit an agent built around a managed runtime. OpenAI’s Agents API computer-use guide describes creating a session, following its events, handling website access requests, waiting for the agent’s turn to finish, reviewing saved activity, and deleting the session: OpenAI Agents API computer-use guide.

These are different operating models, not a proven accuracy or speed ranking for date-range screenshots. Choose based on app access, available controls, repeatability, and the security boundaries of the runtime.
Run the date-range workflow
- Open the authorized app session. Start the browser using the runtime you selected. Complete any required sign-in or access approval yourself when the agent cannot or should not do so.
- Inspect before interacting. Find the start and end date inputs or calendar controls, any Apply or Filter button, and any displayed timezone or range summary. With a snapshot-based Playwright workflow, inspect the accessibility tree and use the references shown for the current page; with visual control, capture and inspect a screenshot.
- Set the requested dates using the controls actually present. Enter dates in the format indicated by the app, or use its calendar UI. Do not assume that typing a date applies it immediately.
- Apply the range if needed. Activate the app’s Apply, Filter, or equivalent control only if the interface requires it. Wait for the page’s results to update.
- Verify both control state and result state. Check that the visible range matches the requested start and end dates, then confirm the chart, table, or other relevant content reflects the filtered view. If either check fails, inspect the controls and page state again instead of taking a screenshot of an uncertain result.
- Capture the intended evidence. Use a viewport screenshot for the current screen, a target screenshot for one element, or a full-page screenshot for the scrollable page. Save it with a useful filename and the required format.
- Review the image and clean up. Open or inspect the saved file to ensure the dates and relevant results are readable. Limit access to the image and remove saved browser-session artifacts when finished if the runtime provides them.
Capture the page with Playwright
The exact selector and interaction code depend on the target app. Do not paste a generic date format or selectors into a real workflow without inspecting the page and confirming how its controls behave. Once the agent or script has set and verified the range, Playwright’s browser API can capture the viewport, a selected element, or the entire page:

Choose the capture scope and scale
- Viewport: captures what is currently visible in the browser window.
- Element: captures a particular locator, such as a chart or report section.
- Full page: captures the entire scrollable page. Playwright documents that full-page capture cannot be combined with target-element capture.
- Format and scale: Playwright documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output and scale choices in CSS pixels or device pixels. Higher device-pixel output changes the relationship between image coordinates and CSS-pixel mouse coordinates; the Playwright CLI documentation calls out this coordinate caveat for high-resolution screenshots: Playwright screenshot and PDF commands.

Protect screenshots and session data
A screenshot can expose account details, customer information, or other page content. Share it only with authorized viewers and keep sensitive image data out of logs. Hosted browser sessions may also retain activity artifacts; review them and delete the session when appropriate. The session lifecycle and activity review steps depend on the runtime, so follow its documented controls rather than assuming every browser service stores or deletes data the same way.

The date fields cannot be found
Inspect the rendered page and its accessibility snapshot for date inputs, calendar buttons, range labels, or filter menus. If the control is hidden behind a menu or dialog, open the relevant UI and inspect again. Do not substitute guessed selectors or rely on coordinates from an earlier screen.

The typed dates do not take effect
The app may require a date format specific to its controls, calendar selection, or a separate Apply action. Read the visible labels and current control values, apply the range if indicated, and wait for the results to refresh.

The results look unchanged or inconsistent
Check that the displayed range updated and that the results finished loading. Confirm timezone and endpoint expectations from the task or app; a page’s general date picker does not tell you whether the end date is inclusive. If the range or filtered content remains unclear, do not label the screenshot as verified.
The screenshot is clipped or hard to read
Use a viewport capture when the important evidence is on screen, an element capture for a particular report component, or full-page capture when the content extends below the fold. Adjust the browser viewport or output scale if needed, then inspect the resulting file. High-resolution output can make image coordinates differ from CSS-pixel coordinates, so avoid reusing coordinate-based actions without accounting for scale.

The page is blocked or requires approval
Use only an authorized session. Handle sign-in, access requests, or approval prompts according to the app’s rules and the chosen runtime; do not attempt to bypass an access control. A failed or blocked load is not evidence of the requested date-filtered page.
Reliability and cost considerations
For recurring captures, a structured script can make browser actions repeatable when the app’s controls remain stable. Visual observation can adapt to unfamiliar layouts, but the agent needs to inspect the screen after actions. Neither approach has an established universal accuracy or speed advantage for this task. In both cases, verify the range and resulting view before saving the image.
Allow time for the app to load and refresh after applying a filter, and capture only after the displayed result is stable. If a hosted session or service is used, review its session and artifact controls, and account for its own usage or pricing terms; the cited computer-use documentation does not establish a universal cost for running this workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent know whether the end date is included?
Not from a generic browser workflow alone. Determine endpoint behavior from the app or the task requirements before treating the screenshot as evidence for a precise interval.
Should I use a full-page screenshot for a date-filtered report?
Only if the needed content extends beyond the visible viewport. If the important evidence is a single chart or table, a targeted element capture may frame it more clearly.
