To keep a playlist job moving past an unavailable video, use yt-dlp’s playlist continuation behavior: its current README describes --no-abort-on-error as continuing with the next video after download errors, including unavailable playlist videos, and lists it as the default. That does not guarantee FFmpeg will stay alive or that viewers will see an uninterrupted live stream. Playlist recovery and live-output continuity are separate problems.
First, identify what must stay alive
A failed playlist item can affect different parts of a workflow. yt-dlp selects and retrieves playlist videos; FFmpeg reads specified inputs and produces an output. Continuing to the next playlist entry can keep a download queue moving, but by itself it does not supervise FFmpeg, preserve a publishing connection, or ensure seamless playback.

- Download queue: yt-dlp should continue traversal after a per-video error.
- Encoder process: FFmpeg must receive valid inputs and be managed across item transitions.
- Live destination: the publishing connection and output must remain acceptable to the destination while items change or fail.
FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes it as a media converter that reads inputs and writes outputs. Its options generally apply to the next specified file, so order matters; it does not turn a YouTube playlist into a fault-tolerant queue simply by being part of a pipeline. Make yt-dlp continue to the next playlist video
Check the installed version and configuration

Check the yt-dlp version installed in the environment that runs the job. Option behavior and defaults can change, and a configuration file or wrapper may override expected behavior.

Confirm that the command is processing a playlist, not just a single video URL. yt-dlp provides playlist-selection controls, and a video URL may also be associated with a playlist. Review the command’s URL and selection options rather than assuming that a playlist will be traversed.

If behavior differs from the documentation, inspect the configuration and the actual command arguments. The project FAQ recommends current-version diagnostics when preparing a reproducible problem report: yt-dlp FAQ.
Use the playlist continuation option for a download job
The yt-dlp README describes --no-abort-on-error as: “Continue with next video on download errors; e.g. to skip unavailable videos in a playlist (default).” You can set it explicitly when you want the command to make that intent clear:

yt-dlp --no-abort-on-error "PLAYLIST_URL"
Replace PLAYLIST_URL with the playlist URL. The option is documented as the default in the current README, but setting it explicitly can make the command’s purpose easier to see and help rule out a changed default. Check the yt-dlp README for the option description corresponding to your installed release.
--ignore-errors has a distinct documented scope: it addresses download and postprocessing errors. Do not treat it as an interchangeable guarantee that another FFmpeg process, a live output, or every kind of failure will recover. Choose options according to which stage is failing rather than stacking flags in the hope of uninterrupted streaming.
Verify that later entries were attempted
Run a short test playlist that includes a representative unavailable item, then inspect yt-dlp’s output. Confirm that it reports the failure and attempts a later entry. The option documents intended continuation, not recovery from every failure class; a failure while resolving a format, downloading fragments, processing a file, or writing an output may behave differently.

For a live stream, supervise playlist items separately from FFmpeg
Passing a single video to a player over standard output is not proof that a sequence of playlist videos can be streamed seamlessly through one long-lived FFmpeg process. yt-dlp’s documented stdout example covers a single video; playlist items can differ in codecs, available formats, duration, or failure behavior. A practical design is to put playlist traversal in yt-dlp or a wrapper and let FFmpeg handle media processing and output. A wrapper can resolve one item at a time, supply a valid input to FFmpeg, catch an item-level failure, and then decide whether to continue, retry, skip, or restart a component. This is an engineering pattern based on the tools’ documented roles, not a universal command recipe guaranteed by their documentation.
Decide transition behavior before going live
- Input compatibility: determine how the workflow handles codec, resolution, frame-rate, and container differences between consecutive items. A transition that works for one playlist may fail on another.
- Timing and gaps: decide whether a failed or short item leaves a gap, whether the next item begins immediately, and how timestamps are handled. Skipping an item is not the same as producing continuous viewer playback.
- Connection policy: establish whether FFmpeg remains running and whether the publishing connection remains open when an item fails. The yt-dlp continuation option does not define either behavior.
- Failure policy: distinguish an unavailable video, missing format, transient network or fragment failure, and an FFmpeg or destination error. Decide which should be retried and which should be skipped.
Test the real pipeline and destination

Test a playlist with a known representative item failure and check whether yt-dlp advances to a later video.

Observe whether FFmpeg stays running, whether the output connection remains open, and what a viewer sees at the transition.

Repeat with the failure types you expect to encounter. A successful skip in one test does not establish uninterrupted output for other media or errors.
