To keep an Android hotspot running while no device is connected, look in its hotspot settings for an idle-timeout or automatic-shutdown option. Supported Samsung Galaxy phones offer a configurable no-device timeout; Google Pixel phones have a “Turn off hotspot automatically” setting. The exact controls vary by model, carrier, and software version, and some phones may not let you disable automatic shutdown.
Change the no-device timeout on a Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections, then Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
- Open Mobile Hotspot and its configuration or information controls.
- Tap Advanced.
- Find Turn off when no device connected for and choose a longer interval, or a never-timeout option if your phone offers one.

Check the automatic-shutdown setting on a Pixel
Open the hotspot settings and look for Turn off hotspot automatically. Google says Pixel hotspots turn off when no devices are connected to save battery, and identifies this setting as the control for that behavior. Turn it off if the option appears. The precise navigation and availability can vary by software version. Google’s instructions are at Share a mobile connection by tethering or hotspot on Pixel.

Find the equivalent setting on other Android phones
Open Settings and search for hotspot, tethering, timeout, or turn off automatically. Menu names and available controls differ across Android devices. Google’s general hotspot guidance describes disabling automatic shutdown conditionally—if the phone supports it—so there is no universal Android setting or guaranteed way to keep every phone’s hotspot on without a connected device. Check what is actually turning off
A no-device timeout applies when no client is connected. If a laptop or other device loses Wi-Fi while the phone’s hotspot remains enabled, that is a different connection problem; the idle-timeout setting does not explain every dropped connection. Check the phone’s hotspot screen to confirm whether the hotspot itself switched off before changing other settings.
If you cannot find the timeout control, check the exact phone model, Android or One UI version, and carrier customization. Those factors can affect which options appear. Avoid assuming that keeping the screen awake, enabling developer options, or installing an app will override the built-in timeout: the support guidance cited here does not establish those as workarounds.

Account for battery use and separate hotspot features
Leaving a hotspot active can drain the phone’s battery faster; Samsung explicitly warns about this. A power bank can supply power during a long session, but it does not change the phone’s software timeout.
Samsung’s Automatic Hotspot is a separate feature for sharing a connection with eligible devices signed in to a Samsung account or family group. It is not a general setting that keeps every Android hotspot discoverable indefinitely. Google also documents an Instant Hotspot feature with its own automatic-off behavior when no device is connected, available on Samsung S25 and newer devices.
