How Much Does It Cost to Charge an Electric SUV at Home and on the Road?

There is no single price to charge an electric SUV. At home, estimate the electricity used by the vehicle at your household’s actual rate; on the road, use the station’s current price and billing rules. A useful starting formula is cost per 100 miles = vehicle consumption in kWh per 100 miles × electricity price per kWh. Treat home charger equipment and installation as separate, usually one-time costs.

Estimate the electricity cost for your SUV

Use the SUV’s energy consumption, not just its battery size. The recurring cost of driving is based on the energy replenished, which usually reflects what you used rather than a full empty-to-full charge.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) uses 27 kWh per 100 miles as an example. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports a 2025 U.S. residential average of 17.30 cents per kWh, based on preliminary Electric Power Monthly data published in February 2026. Combining those inputs gives:

  • Per 100 miles: 27 kWh × $0.173 = about $4.67.
  • At 15,000 miles per year: 4,050 kWh × $0.173 = about $700.65 annually.

These are calculations from an AFDC example and the EIA national average, not a test of a particular electric SUV or a prediction of every household’s bill. Replace 27 kWh with the specific SUV’s consumption and 17.30 cents with the marginal rate on your bill. The AFDC’s example pairs 27 kWh per 100 miles with a different electricity price; the $4.67 figure above uses the EIA rate instead. AFDC charging-cost guidance and EIA electricity data provide the inputs.

  • Indication Displays - LED display that can tell you the status as well as indicate errors while charging your electric vehicle.

For a fair comparison between vehicles, use their consumption figures on the same basis. If you need a precise estimate, account consistently for charging losses as well as the vehicle’s stated or observed energy use.

At home: separate electricity from charger costs

Home charging uses electricity on your household bill. Your incremental cost depends on your utility’s rate, the time you charge and any applicable time-of-use tariff or incentive. Check your bill and utility tariff rather than assuming the U.S. average applies to your home.

The DOE AFDC lists Level 2 equipment at $500–$4,000 before installation and incentives. That is an equipment range, not an installed-price estimate. Installation, permits, local code requirements, electrical-service upgrades and incentives can change the total. Ask your utility and a qualified electrical contractor for a site-specific estimate. The DOE also advises checking vehicle requirements and electrical capacity, following applicable codes and permitting requirements, and using properly certified equipment. See the DOE AFDC consumer guidance.

On the road: check the station’s current price

Some public charging locations may be free, but drivers generally pay more at public stations—particularly DC fast chargers—than for home electricity. Rates and billing vary: a station may charge by energy, time or session, and additional time or idle fees may apply.

Before charging, check the compatible station’s live price and any applicable network plan. If the station bills per kWh, multiply the delivered energy by that rate. If it bills by the minute or session, include those charges and any applicable fees. A per-minute price cannot be compared directly with a per-kWh rate without knowing the energy delivered and charging power.

Why the home estimate changes by location

The EIA’s 2025 state residential averages ranged from 8.20 cents per kWh in North Dakota to 35.72 cents per kWh in Hawaii. Those figures, from preliminary Electric Power Monthly data published in February 2026, show why a national average can mislead; your utility’s rate and the time you charge are more relevant to your bill. The figures are state averages, not individual tariffs. EIA electricity data.

Compare charging options before a trip

For a useful comparison, check the same SUV’s energy consumption against each charging option and account for how each one bills. A low advertised rate is not useful if the station is incompatible, unavailable or off your route.

  • Energy price: your household’s marginal rate versus the station’s current tariff.
  • Vehicle consumption: the SUV’s kWh per 100 miles, using the same basis for both estimates.
  • Billing and added fees: per kWh, per minute or per session; any time-of-use period, plan charge or idle fee.
  • One-time and recurring costs: charger equipment and installation versus electricity used over time.
  • Route practicality: connector compatibility, station availability and charging options along the route. The DOE recommends checking compatibility and route charging options in its consumer guidance.

The DOE’s Electric Vehicles for Consumers page notes: “Typically, most EV charging is done at home, but there is a growing network of chargers available at workplaces, the grocery store, conventional gas stations, and many other destinations.”

What you need for a personal estimate

  1. Find the specific SUV’s energy consumption in kWh per 100 miles.
  2. For home use, find your utility’s applicable marginal rate, including any time-of-use period relevant to when you charge.
  3. Multiply kWh per 100 miles by the rate per kWh to estimate electricity cost per 100 miles; multiply by your annual miles divided by 100 for an annual estimate.
  4. For public charging, check the station’s current price, billing method and applicable fees before plugging in.
  5. Keep any home charger and installation estimate separate from recurring electricity costs.
