How to Keep AI Web Design from Looking Generic: Paul Lacey’s Beaver Builder Workflow

AI can produce a polished-looking website quickly, but when the brief leaves important choices open, its defaults can make the result feel interchangeable. In a Beaver Builder article published September 11, 2026, web designer Paul Lacey describes a workflow that gives AI specific business and design context, then keeps a human designer in charge of approval.

Here, “AI slop” is an editorial label for work that looks acceptable but lacks choices tailored to the business, audience, or purpose—not a formal technical category. The method below is Lacey’s demonstrated approach, as reported by Beaver Builder, rather than an independently validated best-practice standard. Read the Beaver Builder article.

What makes AI-generated web design feel generic?

The issue is not that an AI uses a particular visual device. Repetition without a reason is the problem: a page can accumulate conventions that look polished on their own but do not express the brand or serve the audience.

Examples in Beaver Builder’s account include repeated eyebrow labels, monospace captions, dramatic three-part slogans, gradients, glass effects, translucent cards, and boxes nested inside boxes. These are not automatically bad choices. They become signs of generic output when they recur by default rather than because they fit the brief.

Lacey’s guiding principle is that design choices still need an owner: “If you don’t decide, the AI decides for you.”

How much creative direction should you give AI before it starts designing a website?

Give it enough information to make fewer consequential guesses. Lacey’s process begins with a detailed brief that establishes the project’s context before asking for visual proposals.

Build a brief around the real project

Include the business, its audience, goals, content needs, creative direction, imagery, and constraints. Client materials can make that direction more concrete: brand guidelines, wireframes, approved copy, and reference sites the client likes or dislikes.

Specific constraints matter as much as inspiration. A liked reference can indicate a desired mood or structure; a disliked one can rule out a direction that might otherwise look plausible to an AI. The goal is not to make the prompt longer for its own sake, but to clarify what the site must communicate and what it should avoid.

Research before proposing a visual direction

In Lacey’s described workflow, Claude researches the market, reviews relevant websites, and finds imagery before it proposes visual directions. That sequence gives the design work context rather than asking the model to invent a style from a vague request.

Which web design decisions should never be left entirely to AI?

Lacey’s process places human approval between AI-generated proposals and the work that expands them. The designer reviews the visual direction and style tiles, then checks typography, colors, imagery, and the design system before allowing the homepage and subsequent pages to proceed.

These are not minor finishing details: together they determine whether the site’s appearance fits the brief and whether its pages can remain coherent. AI can propose options, but the designer decides which options are appropriate and approves the rules that later work should follow.

How does the workflow move from a homepage to a complete site?

  1. Prepare the brief and source materials. Assemble business and audience context, goals, creative direction, imagery and content needs, constraints, and relevant client materials.
  2. Research and explore. Use Claude to examine the market and relevant sites, find imagery, and propose visual directions.
  3. Review the direction before building. Approve the visual direction and style tiles; check typography, colors, imagery, and the design system.
  4. Build the homepage after approval. Treat the homepage as an application of the agreed direction, not as permission to skip review.
  5. Extend the system to other pages. Once the homepage establishes the approved direction, apply it across the remaining site and audit consistency and accessibility.
  6. Package the approved work. Assemble the reusable pages, layouts, assets, and rules into a Beaver Builder AI Design Kit.

Lacey summarizes the need for deliberate involvement this way: “Designing with AI is not a switch that you just flip.”

How can web designers train AI to follow their own design style?

Lacey describes using a custom Claude Skill to hold reusable process instructions. He refined it by reviewing briefs, completed sites, and decisions he had challenged across 24 websites. That number is the account of his own process in the Beaver Builder article; it is not a published controlled evaluation or an independently verified measure of improved results.

A Skill and a Design Kit serve different purposes. The Skill tells Claude how to work; it does not, by itself, carry an approved site into WordPress. Lacey’s approach pairs reusable instructions with a separate package of approved design material.

How do you turn an AI-generated design into a reusable Beaver Builder design system?

Beaver Builder AI Design Kits package approved pages, saved rows, global layouts, brand guidance, assets, and rules for an editable WordPress site. The source describes a Design Kit as an importable ZIP package. In this workflow, it is the handoff from approved design decisions to reusable building blocks—not a substitute for deciding what the design should be.

The two parts work together: the Claude Skill carries process instructions, while the Design Kit carries the site-specific pages and design system approved by the designer. Keeping that distinction clear helps prevent a reusable prompt from being mistaken for a reusable, ready-to-edit site.

What this workflow does—and does not—establish

Beaver Builder’s article presents Lacey’s method and his account of refining a Skill; it does not report an independent study comparing AI design workflows, quantify how common generic AI design is, or establish an outcome rate for the approach. Its practical contribution is a concrete division of labor: use AI for research and proposals, give it a detailed brief, and reserve approval of consequential design choices for the human designer.
