On a Bash-like shell, you can avoid typing your YouTube stream key into the FFmpeg command by reading it silently into a variable first. That keeps the literal key out of that command-history entry, but it does not guarantee the key is hidden from local processes: expanding the variable into the output URL passes the expanded URL to FFmpeg. Use this as a history-risk reduction, not complete protection.
Read the key separately, then run FFmpeg
YouTube describes a stream key as like a password and address: it tells an encoder where to send a feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it as a credential, not ordinary command text. YouTube’s Help instructions say to copy the key into the encoder’s Stream Key setting.

In a Bash-like shell, read the key without echoing it, then use the variable in the output URL:

This is an illustrative shell pattern, not a complete or verified FFmpeg invocation. Replace [input options] with the options for your source, and confirm the correct YouTube ingestion URL and FFmpeg output options for your setup. The example endpoint is not a substitute for checking the server address shown for your stream.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Run the
readline in the interactive shell. The prompt accepts the key without displaying it; press Enter when finished. - Run the FFmpeg command with your actual input options. The key is not part of the text you typed for that command, but shell expansion puts it in the URL passed to FFmpeg.
- Run
unset YT_KEYafter FFmpeg has started, or after it exits if you need to restart it. This removes the shell variable; it cannot retract the expanded argument already passed to a running process.
The exact behavior may differ across shells and operating systems. Confirm that your shell supports the options used by read before relying on this pattern.
What this protects—and what it does not
Shell history usually records the command text you enter, not the hidden characters supplied in response to the separate silent prompt. So this pattern helps keep the literal key out of the FFmpeg command you type. It does not make the credential secret from every local observer.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- FFmpeg arguments: Because the shell expands
${YT_KEY}while building the URL, FFmpeg receives the expanded URL as an argument. Whether another local user or tool can inspect process arguments depends on the operating system, permissions, and monitoring environment. Do not assume a variable hides the key from a process listing. - Files and logs: Do not put the key in a script committed to version control, shared logs, screenshots, or terminal recordings. A separate configuration file is not automatically safe either; its exposure depends on where it is stored and who can read it.
- Shell tracing: Do not enable
set -xwhile handling the key. Tracing can print expanded command text. - Network transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS and says data is encrypted to and through Google’s servers. That protects the transmission path; it does not remove the key from shell history or establish that it is hidden from local process inspection.
If you need stronger local isolation than this pattern provides, use a trusted encoder integration with protected secret configuration, and verify how it stores and passes credentials. A shell or environment variable alone is not a complete secret-management system.
If the key has already been exposed
If the literal key appeared in shell history, a screenshot, a shared recording, or another location others could access, treat it as compromised. YouTube documents resetting a suspected-compromise key in Live Control Room and then updating the encoder. Only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key. Deleting a history entry alone is not sufficient incident response because copies may already exist elsewhere.
