To keep a YouTube Live store promo running during a power cut, keep both the streaming encoder and every device on its internet path powered—and confirm that the ISP connection still works. A compatible inverter or UPS with a suitable battery can bridge a local power failure, but it cannot guarantee that the provider’s upstream network remains available. Test the complete setup before relying on it.
What has to stay on for the stream to continue?
A live stream depends on the device that plays and encodes the promo, plus a working connection to YouTube. A router that stays powered is not enough if the computer or hardware encoder shuts down. Likewise, a powered encoder cannot keep streaming if the internet path fails.

- Streaming computer or hardware encoder.
- Any camera or audio device the stream actually needs.
- Modem or fiber ONT, then the router.
- Any switch or access point between the router and encoder.
For a pre-rendered loop, the computer or encoder still has to play, encode and transmit the video. If you stream from a phone, the phone and its mobile data connection are the relevant path; do not assume switching devices during a live event preserves the same session without testing it.

How to size an inverter or UPS for the real setup
Measure the load and set a target runtime
- Record the watt draw or manufacturer input rating for each device you need to keep on.
- Add the loads that will run together, including the encoder and the full modem/ONT/router chain.
- Choose a backup system whose output capacity accommodates the load in both watts and VA. APC explains that watts measure real power while VA is voltage multiplied by current; the UPS watt rating must exceed the connected equipment load. APC’s UPS buying guide explains the distinction.
- Decide how long you need the stream to bridge an outage. Compare runtime specifications at a load close to your measured load; the more equipment connected, the less runtime remains.
- Check battery capacity and condition, recharge and replacement arrangements, transfer behavior, and installation requirements. Confirm compatibility with the manufacturer or a qualified local installer.
VA alone does not tell you how long a system will run. A Microtek India product page lists an Energy Saver UPS 1025 12V inverter paired with a 150Ah battery and rated 925VA, with laptop and Wi-Fi router among the supported loads. That product-specific example does not establish a runtime for your encoder or guarantee suitability for your total load; ratings and product details can change. Check the manufacturer’s product information and confirm the configuration for your equipment.
When a router mini UPS may be enough
A small router UPS may cover network devices, but only if its voltage, polarity, connector and current match each device it powers. Make sure the modem or ONT is covered as well as the router. It will not power the encoder unless it is designed and rated to do so. For an inverter-based setup, plan for the complete set of critical devices rather than the most visible one.

Keep internet continuity separate from power backup
A battery keeps local equipment running; it cannot ensure that a fiber, cable or mobile provider’s upstream network stays active. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream in its streaming tips.

- Ask your ISP whether the local access network remains available during power cuts, then test the connection at the shop during a real or simulated outage.
- If you plan to use a phone hotspot or a second ISP, test upload performance and YouTube stream health from the actual location. A second subscription by itself does not prove the backup path will work.
- Check whether the alternate connection shares a failure point with the primary one, such as the same powered network equipment.
Configure and test the YouTube Live setup
- Set the encoder to a stable configuration that your available upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom in its streaming tips. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for settings appropriate to your stream.
- With the same promo loop and equipment you intend to use, simulate a power interruption. Confirm the source keeps playing, the encoder stays connected and every required modem, ONT, router, switch or access point remains on.
- In YouTube, check the stream preview and stream health. Verify that the public watch page opens from the channel and on a phone, as described in YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- If you configure a backup encoder, test failover using YouTube’s instructions. Its guidance says to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable and confirm that the player rolls over to the backup encoder.
Encoder failover helps with some encoder failures; it does not resolve a shared power outage or a shared ISP failure. If both encoders rely on the same outlet, router or internet link, they share those risks.

What to compare before choosing backup equipment
- Which devices the system powers, including the complete internet path.
- Rated output in watts and VA, checked against the measured load.
- Specified runtime at a comparable load—not just battery capacity or VA.
- Transfer behavior and compatibility with the devices being powered.
- Battery type, recharge needs, replacement and service arrangements.
- Whether the internet connection has an independently tested backup path.
- Installation and electrical safety requirements for the site.
