If OBS crashes, reopen it and check the broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room before trying to reconnect. OBS’s automatic reconnect can retry a supported output connection while OBS is still running; it cannot restart a crashed application. YouTube and OBS documentation do not guarantee that restarting OBS will resume the same broadcast, or specify a universal grace period. Treat recovery as conditional, not automatic.
First, identify what failed
OBS sending a video feed, YouTube receiving that feed, and the event being live for viewers are separate states. After a failure, check the Live Control Room’s broadcast status and stream-health messages rather than relying only on OBS’s status indicator. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during an event: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

| What you see | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS is open and reports a dropped connection | The encoder process is still running; its output may be retrying. | Check OBS reconnect settings and investigate connection or ingest issues. |
| OBS closed or crashed | The encoder process stopped. Automatic reconnect cannot relaunch it. | Reopen OBS, inspect the event in Live Control Room, then try to reconnect. |
| OBS says it is streaming, but YouTube has no usable feed | OBS’s output status does not establish that YouTube is receiving the intended feed. | Verify the selected broadcast, service, server, stream key, and YouTube stream health. |
| The YouTube event shows as ended | The event may no longer accept the resumed feed. | Select or create another broadcast and share its destination with viewers if needed. |
For the first case, OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting covers dropped frames and connection issues. A network symptom alone does not show that OBS crashed.

- Note what happened. Record the time and whether OBS disappeared, froze, or stayed open while reporting a dropped connection.
- Check the event in YouTube Live Control Room. Review its current state, preview, and stream-health messages. Do not assume that a green or active-looking OBS status means viewers are receiving the intended broadcast.
- Reopen OBS. If it offers Safe Mode after an improper shutdown, use that option for a diagnostic run. OBS’s interface describes Safe Mode as disabling third-party plugins, scripting, and WebSockets: OBS Studio English interface strings.
- Check the stream destination before starting output. Select the correct profile and scene collection, and verify the YouTube service, server, and stream key. YouTube explains that the stream key is created in YouTube and entered in the encoder in Manage live stream settings. A restart alone is not a reason to reset a valid key.
- Start streaming and check both sides. Watch OBS’s output status and YouTube’s health or preview. If YouTube will not accept the feed for the existing event, select or create a new broadcast and direct viewers to it. The available official guidance does not promise that the old event can always be resumed.
- Save the crash evidence. Preserve the OBS log and any crash report before making multiple changes. OBS’s overview guide asks people seeking support to include a log file.
Prepare OBS and YouTube before a rerun
Enable output reconnect for connection interruptions
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and find the Network options for automatic reconnect. Enable it and choose a retry count and delay appropriate to your setup. The exact labels can vary by OBS version. This setting is for supported output interruptions when OBS remains open; it is not a crash-recovery watchdog. OBS’s output API reference says, “The retry time will double on each retry to prevent overloading services”: OBS Studio 33.0.0 Output API Reference. That behavior is not a guarantee that every outage or crash will recover.

Preserve the setup you need to restart
- Save the OBS profile and scene collection used for the rerun.
- Keep copies of essential custom assets and notes about plugins or scripts, so a restart or diagnostic run does not leave you rebuilding the scene under pressure.
- Have a separate way to check Live Control Room, such as a phone or second screen.
- Run a safe test that includes gameplay motion and audio. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring health messages while it is live.
Decide how YouTube auto-stop should behave
YouTube’s controls include an auto-stop setting, and settings can be copied when reused. The OBS guide to streaming to YouTube says auto-stop disables the possibility of reconnecting later to continue that broadcast: How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio. If preserving the possibility of reconnecting to the same scheduled event matters, test the event with auto-stop disabled. This does not restart OBS or guarantee that the event will remain available; check the current setting and event status in Live Control Room.
Why there is no guaranteed reconnect timer
The official YouTube and OBS pages cited here do not specify a universal number of minutes YouTube will wait after an OBS crash, nor guarantee that reopening OBS resumes the same event. The result depends on the broadcast’s current state and settings. Check Live Control Room rather than relying on a timer or assuming the event is still recoverable.

YouTube’s HLS documentation mentions a backup ingestion URL for compatible encoders, but that endpoint option does not establish automatic failover after an OBS process crash or guarantee that the broadcast remains available: Set up an HLS stream.
Diagnose repeated crashes separately from connection drops
If OBS keeps closing
Try a Safe Mode run, then investigate plugins, scripts, browser sources, GPU or encoder drivers, and recent updates one at a time. Safe Mode helps narrow the problem by disabling plugins and scripts; it does not identify the cause by itself. Keep the OBS log and crash report for diagnosis.

If OBS stays open but drops frames or disconnects
Investigate the connection path and configured bitrate rather than treating it as an application crash. OBS lists server choice, bitrate, security software, VPN, and network configuration among areas to check in its connection troubleshooting guide. Compare those symptoms with the YouTube health messages and OBS log.

For a prerecorded gaming rerun, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live without leaving OBS or a home computer running. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube. Because the stream runs in the cloud, a crash on your local computer does not stop that cloud stream. It supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
