What each option does—and what it does not do
Advanced Scene Switcher: automate repeatable OBS actions
Advanced Scene Switcher is the most direct starting point when you want OBS to respond to rules—for example, switching scenes or starting an action when a defined condition occurs. Its macro-oriented approach can cover more than scene changes, including recording and replay-buffer actions. Build only rules you can understand and verify; automation that triggers at the wrong time can disrupt a recording just as easily as it can save clicks.
The OBS resource page’s latest update notice is dated August 7, 2026, and states a minimum supported OBS version of 31.1.1. These details can change, so check the current resource listing before installing or upgrading.

Chapter Marker Manager: keep editing notes while you play
StreamUP Chapter Marker Manager is useful when the hard part is remembering where a good moment happened in a long session. You can mark from its OBS dock or a hotkey, or use WebSocket and scene changes. Automatic marking can also be limited by excluding scenes, which helps prevent routine transitions from filling the marker list with noise. Export the marker data for your post-production workflow.
The OBS resource page lists OBS 28.0.0 as its minimum and shows an update dated April 14, 2026. If you want markers embedded in a recording rather than kept as exported data, check the plugin’s documentation for the required OBS version and recording-format conditions. OBS WebSocket: the bridge to external control
OBS Studio includes WebSocket by default beginning with OBS Studio 28. You do not need to install a separate WebSocket plugin just to get the built-in integration; you need a compatible external client only if you want another application or device to send OBS commands. OBS lists compatible clients in its Remote Control Guide.
Enable WebSocket when your workflow needs external control, not merely to use OBS normally. Set authentication and a password, and treat any network-accessible endpoint as a control interface. OBS’s guide explains the connection and security settings.

Build a practical recording workflow
- Design the scene structure. Create the scenes you actually use for the gaming session, then identify the transitions or repeated actions worth automating. A simple, maintainable structure is easier to troubleshoot than a large set of overlapping rules.
- Automate repeatable actions with macros. In Advanced Scene Switcher, configure a specific trigger and the resulting OBS action, such as a scene switch or recording-related action. Test each macro during a controlled session before relying on it in a full recording.
- Add WebSocket only for external control. If a client or device needs to control OBS, enable the built-in WebSocket connection and configure authentication. Confirm that the client can issue the exact request your workflow needs.
- Mark moments that matter. Add Chapter Marker Manager if manually finding highlights is a recurring editing bottleneck. Use a hotkey for notable moments; use scene-change marking only when those transitions genuinely correspond to a useful edit point. Exclude scenes that would otherwise create irrelevant markers.
- Export and turn notes into chapters. Export marker data as appropriate for your editing setup, then prepare the final chapter list for YouTube. Markers are source notes: review them, choose useful chapter titles, and enter compliant timestamps in the video description.
- Check the published description. Ensure the first timestamp is 00:00, there are at least three timestamps in ascending order, and every chapter spans at least 10 seconds. YouTube’s Video chapters help page also notes that manual chapters require access to advanced features if the channel does not yet have chapter access.
OBS plugins, scripts, and WebSocket clients are different routes
OBS supports plugins, scripts, and WebSocket-based external applications. A compiled plugin integrates into OBS but may need recompilation after OBS changes. Scripts use Python or Lua and are generally more resilient to minor API changes, though they are less performant; OBS says performance is usually not an issue in most cases. WebSocket lets a separate application or script interact with OBS. The OBS Developer Guide describes these extension paths.
Choose based on the job: use a plugin for functionality packaged into OBS, a script for a smaller custom automation, or a WebSocket client when control should come from another application. Check compatibility against your installed OBS build rather than assuming an extension will continue to work after an update.

Can a Stream Deck control OBS?
Yes. A Stream Deck can provide physical buttons for compatible OBS actions through supported integrations, including WebSocket-based control. It is optional hardware, not a requirement for Advanced Scene Switcher, recording markers, or YouTube chapters. StreamUP’s plugin documentation lists Stream Deck among compatible automation tools.
Common problems and fixes
- The plugin will not install or load. Check its current minimum OBS version, your operating-system installer, and whether your OBS build matches the release requirements. A plugin may also need updating after OBS changes.
- A macro switches scenes at the wrong time. Recheck the trigger condition and resulting action, simplify overlapping rules, and test with a short controlled recording before using the configuration live.
- An external client cannot connect. Confirm WebSocket is enabled, the client is compatible, the connection details match, and authentication is configured correctly. If connecting across a network, inspect the network access and firewall path without disabling authentication.
- Marker output is missing or unusable. Confirm the marker method and export settings, then check the plugin’s requirements for embedded markers, including OBS version and recording container. Exported data and embedded recording markers are not the same output path.
- YouTube does not display the expected chapters. Check the description list against YouTube’s timestamp rules and channel feature access. A marker in OBS is not itself a published chapter, and automatic chapters are not guaranteed: YouTube says not every video is eligible and not every eligible video receives them. Manual description chapters override automatic chapters.
