To keep a YouTube gaming stream running, back up the devices it needs, size the UPS for their real gaming load and runtime, and test your connection separately. For a long outage, those limits matter: a household UPS is a bridge, not a whole-house power solution.
What has to stay on for the stream to continue?
YouTube describes encoder streaming as commonly used for gameplay, including streams with overlays and external hardware. The exact equipment depends on your setup, but a PC or console alone may not be enough. Map the full path from gameplay to YouTube before choosing what to put on battery.

- Gaming system: the PC or console generating the gameplay.
- Encoding equipment: the gaming PC itself, a separate streaming computer, capture hardware, and any other equipment your encoder needs.
- Networking: the modem and router, plus any other local network device required to reach the internet.
- Display and peripherals: include a monitor or other equipment only if you need it to keep playing, control the stream, or shut down safely.
A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) provides battery power to connected equipment when input power fails. The U.S. Department of Energy describes a UPS as a power system that maintains load power during an input-power failure. A surge protector alone does not provide that battery backup.

How to size a UPS for a gaming stream
Measure the load you actually need
List the devices that must run at the same time and check their watt draw under the conditions you expect. For a gaming PC, use a reading taken during gameplay rather than idle use; include capture and encoding equipment, networking gear, and any required display. Allow for transient peaks as well as typical draw.
Compare the total load with the UPS’s supported output in both watts and volt-amperes (VA). The VA rating by itself does not establish that a UPS can handle your equipment’s watt demand or keep it running for a particular duration. APC’s sizing guide says output watt capacity should exceed the connected load and that runtime falls as more equipment is connected. Leave nonessential devices off the battery-backed outlets.

Check outlets, runtime, and expansion
- Confirm the UPS has battery-backed outlets for every device you need during an outage. Some outlets may provide surge protection only; check the outlet map for the specific model.
- Check the manufacturer’s runtime estimate for a load close to your measured setup, and treat it as an estimate rather than a guarantee. A higher VA label is not a runtime promise.
- If you need longer runtime, consider an external battery pack only when the UPS explicitly supports a compatible pack. Schneider Electric says compatible extended-runtime configurations can use external battery packs; the result depends on the UPS configuration and load.
- Check the UPS’s output and power-quality requirements against the equipment manufacturer’s guidance. Compare units by supported watts and VA, battery-backed outlet count, runtime at your load, and monitoring features—not just by gaming branding.
There is no universal UPS size for a gaming stream: the right choice depends on your equipment’s measured load, the devices you need to keep on, and how long you want them to run. As one example of a product rating—not a sizing recommendation or runtime claim—the Schneider Electric/APC gaming UPS page lists a model rated at 1320W/2200VA. Verify current specifications and availability on the manufacturer’s product page before purchase.
Will the internet stay up during a power cut?
Not necessarily. A UPS can power your own modem and router, but it cannot keep an ISP’s neighborhood equipment, cable or fiber plant, or wireless tower operating if those lose power. YouTube warns, “Have a reliable network: A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” A local battery backup and an available internet connection are separate requirements.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total bitrate. If you use primary and backup encoders, its guidance says to account for both bitrates plus that headroom. Check your available upload bandwidth and ask your internet provider how service behaves during local outages; do not assume a UPS guarantees connectivity.
Prepare and test before relying on the setup
YouTube recommends preparing encoder streams in advance and checking the preview in Live Control Room. Its guidance also includes testing encoder failover, checking the local archive, verifying the event from a watch page or mobile device, and monitoring audio and video.

- Set up the stream ahead of time. Configure the encoder and YouTube event before the scheduled stream, then confirm the Live Control Room preview looks and sounds right.
- Test encoder failover. YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection to test what happens. Confirm the backup behavior you intend to rely on.
- Check the local recording. Verify the archive file exists and plays correctly; do not assume the platform archive is your only copy.
- Verify the viewer experience. Open the event from a watch page or mobile device and check picture, sound, and stream status.
- Run a battery test at realistic load. With the setup configured as it will be for gameplay, unplug mains power according to the UPS maker’s instructions. Confirm the UPS supports the load, note its displayed runtime, and check that the modem and router remain online.
- Test loss of connectivity. Observe what your encoder and YouTube event do when the internet connection is interrupted. This is a practical readiness test, not a YouTube-certified outage procedure.
What a power interruption means for the replay
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not guarantee that a stream interrupted by a power or network failure will resume as one uninterrupted video. Check the event and archive after an interruption rather than assuming viewers will see a seamless replay.

Quick Recap
Troubleshooting: why did the stream stop?
- The UPS alarms or drops the gaming system: the load may exceed its supported output, or a device may be connected to a surge-only outlet. Recheck the measured gaming load, supported watts, outlet map, and peak demand.
- Runtime is much shorter than expected: too many devices may be drawing from the battery, or the load may be higher than the estimate assumed. Remove nonessential equipment and compare the UPS manufacturer’s runtime guidance against the actual load.
- The PC stays on but the stream disconnects: local equipment having power does not prove the internet path is working. Check modem/router power and connection status, available upload bandwidth, and whether your provider’s service remains available during outages.
- The stream’s video or audio is missing: use the encoder preview and viewer-side check to isolate the source, then monitor both audio and video as YouTube recommends.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: check the local recording and the YouTube event separately. Automatic archiving for encoder streams under 12 hours is not a guarantee of an uninterrupted replay after a failure.
