These settings cover two different events: boot enablement starts the service after a server reboot; the restart policy tells systemd what to do when FFmpeg exits unsuccessfully. Neither can prevent a brief interruption during a reboot or fix a broken FFmpeg command, so check the service journal and YouTube stream status if it does not reconnect.
What happens when a Linux server updates
Some updates require a reboot. Ubuntu’s unattended-upgrades documentation explains that the service can be configured to reboot automatically when needed, with reboot behavior and timing adjustable. That is Ubuntu-specific; do not assume Debian, Fedora, or another distribution uses the same defaults.

A reboot terminates the running FFmpeg process. A systemd service enabled at boot can start it again afterward, but viewers may see a gap. This is recovery after the reboot, not preservation of the existing live session. Successful reconnection still depends on the input being available, the command and credentials being valid, network access working, and YouTube accepting the ingest connection.
Prepare the working FFmpeg command and protect the stream key
- Save the exact command that currently works. Include the input, codecs, output options, and YouTube ingest destination. Do not silently change encoding or ingest settings while moving it into a service.
- Use the current YouTube stream details. YouTube’s LiveStreams resource distinguishes the primary and backup ingestion addresses and includes the stream name. Use the current values for your channel and selected ingest method rather than copying a sample endpoint or inventing a key.
- Keep the stream key secret. Do not publish it in an article, screenshot, public repository, or broadly readable log. Store secrets in configuration with appropriately restricted access, and ensure the service can read that configuration.
- Record the executable path. A system service does not necessarily inherit the interactive shell’s environment or search path. Find the FFmpeg executable path on your server and use it explicitly in the unit.
Create a systemd service
Create a unit file, for example /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service. The following is a template, not a ready-to-run FFmpeg command: replace the example executable and arguments with the exact working command, and arrange the secret key through restricted configuration rather than exposing it in a public unit example.

[Unit]
Description=YouTube FFmpeg stream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [your existing FFmpeg arguments]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Replace /usr/bin/ffmpeg if FFmpeg is installed elsewhere. In ExecStart, systemd expects an executable followed by its arguments; do not paste shell syntax such as a leading ffmpeg command that assumes an interactive shell. If your existing command relies on shell expansion, pipes, or environment variables, adapt it deliberately for a service rather than assuming the shell will interpret it.
What the restart settings do—and do not do
For long-running services, systemd describes Restart=on-failure as the recommended choice. It asks systemd to restart the service after eligible unsuccessful exits. RestartSec=5 adds a five-second delay before an attempted restart; choose a measured delay appropriate to your setup, not as a guarantee of recovery. Restart attempts are subject to systemd start-rate limits, so a command that fails repeatedly may stop being retried until the underlying error is addressed.

An intentional systemctl stop does not trigger an automatic restart. Restart policies govern qualifying process exits; they do not override an administrator’s deliberate stop command or replace boot enablement.

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-ffmpeg.service
daemon-reload makes systemd read the new unit. enable configures it to start at boot, while --now starts it immediately. Enabling the service handles a host reboot; Restart=on-failure handles eligible FFmpeg exits while the host is running. You need both for those two recovery cases.
Check service and YouTube status after a restart
- Check whether systemd considers the unit active:
sudo systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service. - Read the service’s recent log entries:
sudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -b. The-boption limits the view to the current boot; inspect the relevant boot’s journal if diagnosing an earlier reboot. - Check YouTube’s stream health or status as well as the local service. A process can be running while its input, output, or ingest connection is not working as expected.
- If systemd reports a start-limit failure, diagnose the logged error first. Do not repeatedly restart the unit or clear its failure state without addressing the cause.
Check the YouTube ingest protocol if FFmpeg cannot connect
YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest, but they are not interchangeable choices for every encoding and latency requirement. YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison lists codec and latency differences: RTMP and RTMPS support H.264 and are suited to normal, low, or ultra-low latency; HLS and DASH include options such as HEVC or VP9 and have higher-latency characteristics in the comparison. Check the selected stream’s codec and latency needs before changing protocols.

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS and says it is “a good choice for most ordinary user content, especially if it requires low latency.” For RTMPS, use a valid YouTube ingest endpoint and application path, connect on port 443, and ensure TLS uses the correct hostname through SNI. A wrong hostname, port, or TLS setup can cause connection errors or timeouts. Consult YouTube’s RTMPS documentation and the current stream details when checking the destination.

| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The service does not start after reboot | The unit was not enabled, or systemd rejected the unit or command. | Check sudo systemctl is-enabled youtube-ffmpeg.service, then inspect sudo systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service and the current boot’s journal. |
| FFmpeg starts and exits repeatedly | Input availability, command arguments, permissions, or ingest configuration may be wrong; systemd may eventually apply its start-rate limits. | Read sudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -b and fix the reported failure before trying to restart it again. |
| The service is active but YouTube shows no healthy stream | The process may be running without successfully sending the intended output, or YouTube may not be accepting the connection. | Check FFmpeg’s service logs and YouTube’s stream status; verify the current stream name, ingest address, and key. |
| RTMPS connection errors or timeouts | Endpoint, application path, port, or TLS hostname/SNI configuration. | Use the current YouTube RTMPS destination, port 443, and correct hostname handling; do not substitute a sample URL. |
| The stream stops after an administrator stops the unit | A manual stop is intentional and is not reversed by Restart=on-failure. |
Start it explicitly with sudo systemctl start youtube-ffmpeg.service when you intend it to run again. |
Plan for the reboot gap and test safely
A systemd unit cannot keep the old FFmpeg process alive through a host reboot. Test the service on the target distribution during a planned maintenance window, then verify both the service journal and YouTube stream status after the reboot. Do not assume that success on Ubuntu establishes the update or reboot behavior for another distribution.

If you need a stream to avoid depending on a home computer or Linux server staying on, a cloud-hosted option is a different operating model. It does not make a rebooted FFmpeg process continue its old session; it avoids using that self-managed process for playback.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video playback to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Start the free first day.
