How to Keep a YouTube Playlist Stream Running After a Linux VPS Reboots

Use systemd to start a playlist media process after a Linux VPS reboot, then verify the media itself. Includes separate guidance for local playback and an outgoing YouTube Live broadcast.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a systemd service to start your media command at boot, then configure the media tool to recover from the specific input or output failures it can handle. These are separate problems: systemd can restart a process that exits, but it cannot by itself fix a stalled playlist or prove that a YouTube Live broadcast is advancing.

First distinguish two meanings of “YouTube playlist stream.” If you mean playing playlist videos on the VPS, the steps below supervise a player or media process on that server. If you mean sending playlist videos as a public live broadcast to YouTube Live, the process also needs a valid destination and stream key, and you must verify the incoming feed in YouTube. Boot startup is common to both; the media command and health checks are not.

Choose the right kind of stream

A VPS can play media headlessly, or it can publish an outgoing live broadcast. Those are not interchangeable setups. Decide which one you need before creating a service, because a player command does not automatically send video to YouTube Live.

Goal What runs on the VPS What to verify
Play a playlist on the server A player such as mpv, or another command that consumes the playlist That the playlist resolves and media continues to advance; a headless player may need an observable output appropriate to your use case
Broadcast playlist media to YouTube Live A media pipeline that reads the playlist and sends an outgoing feed to YouTube That YouTube receives an advancing feed, not just that the local process is running

If you are unsure which you mean, identify the destination first: local playback stays on the VPS, while an outgoing broadcast must be configured to publish to YouTube Live.

Test the media command before making it a service

Run the intended command interactively as the same Linux user that will run the service, or otherwise confirm that account can access its inputs and configuration. Use an absolute path for the executable when you later put it in the unit file. Check that the playlist URL or media files resolve and that the output goes to the intended destination.

For a playlist player

mpv can handle YouTube URLs through its youtube-dl-compatible hook; its FAQ advises supplying the actual playlist URL. yt-dlp can also pass media to a player through standard input and output. These integrations depend on upstream YouTube behavior and tool versions, so a command that worked previously may need an update if playlist extraction stops working. See the mpv manual and the yt-dlp FAQ.

For an outgoing YouTube Live broadcast

Test the full media pipeline, including playlist input, encoding or remuxing as applicable, network access, and the YouTube Live destination. Keep the stream key out of publicly readable scripts and unit text where possible. If you use an environment file, restrict its permissions and ensure the service account can read it. A process that starts successfully does not establish that the key is valid or that YouTube is receiving video.

Create a systemd unit for the foreground command

Run the long-lived media command in the foreground so systemd can supervise its process. The following is a starting template, not a tested command: replace the description, user, directory, executable, and arguments with values for your setup.

[Service]

User=media
WorkingDirectory=/opt/playlist-stream
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/your-media-command --your-options
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
  • User=media assumes you have created an appropriate unprivileged account. Confirm it can read playlist inputs, configuration, and any environment file the command needs.
  • WorkingDirectory is optional if your command does not rely on relative paths; use a directory the service account can access.
  • ExecStart must be replaced with the actual foreground command and its arguments. Do not use a shell-only command or a process that backgrounds itself unless you deliberately configure systemd to track it correctly.
  • Restart=on-failure requests a restart when the service exits in a failure state. RestartSec=10 gives a delay before a retry; choose an interval suitable for your workload and inspect recurring failures rather than hiding them with rapid retries.
  • Wants=network-online.target and After=network-online.target express boot ordering intent. They do not guarantee internet reachability, DNS success, or YouTube availability.

Systemd restart behavior is not a media health monitor. A silent hang or frozen output may leave the process alive, so a restart policy alone might not recover it. Restart behavior and rate limits can also vary with unit configuration and the installed systemd version; consult your distribution’s documentation and the systemd service documentation.

Enable the service and check its logs

Save the unit as /etc/systemd/system/playlist-stream.service, changing the filename if you prefer a different unit name. Then reload systemd’s unit definitions, enable the service for boot, start it now, and inspect its status and journal.

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now playlist-stream.service
systemctl status playlist-stream.service
journalctl -u playlist-stream.service -f

enable connects the unit to its configured boot target; --now also starts it immediately. The systemctl documentation describes this enablement model. Read the journal after the initial start: a service can be enabled for boot yet fail immediately because of a bad path, missing permissions, or invalid arguments.

Add media-layer recovery only where it applies

Process restart, input reconnect, and output recovery address different failure points. Use the option that matches your pipeline rather than treating all disconnects as the same fault.

Recovery layer What it may address What it does not establish
systemd restart policy A process that exits in a restartable failure state That a still-running process is advancing media
FFmpeg HTTP input reconnect options Selected HTTP disconnect, EOF, or streamed-input cases, depending on the option and protocol Recovery from every expired URL, permission error, invalid key, or application-level hang
FFmpeg FIFO muxer recovery Attempts to recover an output path in cases supported by its FIFO muxer options That an input is valid or the receiving service accepts the broadcast

HTTP input reconnect in FFmpeg

FFmpeg documents HTTP options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_streamed. They are protocol- and case-specific, and their placement in the command matters: input options generally need to be placed before the input they configure. Check the documentation for the FFmpeg version installed on your VPS and apply only the flags relevant to that input. The FFmpeg HTTP protocol documentation defines their scope. A 2015 FFmpeg commit described the reconnect options as allowing reconnection for “endless live streams which fail with eof”; that is not a promise to repair every YouTube or media failure.

Output recovery with FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer

For output recovery, FFmpeg documents the FIFO muxer and options such as attempt_recovery. This is a separate mechanism from HTTP input reconnect. Confirm that your command uses the FIFO muxer in the relevant output path and check the options supported by your installed version in the FFmpeg formats documentation. Neither reconnect nor FIFO recovery can correct an invalid stream key, an expired media URL, or a pipeline that is hung without exiting.

Reboot and verify media, not just the service state

  1. Before rebooting, confirm the service starts successfully and inspect its latest logs with journalctl -u playlist-stream.service.
  2. Reboot the VPS using your provider’s normal controls or a planned system reboot.
  3. After it returns, check systemctl status playlist-stream.service and review the journal for startup errors or repeated restart attempts.
  4. For local/headless playback, verify observable output or media progress using the monitoring or playback method appropriate to your setup.
  5. For an outgoing broadcast, inspect YouTube’s receiving side and confirm the incoming feed is present and advancing. Do not treat an active local process as proof of a healthy live broadcast.

If the service is active but the media is frozen, systemd may have nothing to restart. You need a media-level health check or a recovery mechanism suited to the actual failure; the options described above do not cover every silent stall.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

  • Service does not start at boot: Check systemctl status and the unit journal. Confirm the unit was saved in the expected location, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload after editing it, and verify the unit is enabled.
  • “No such file” or executable errors: Replace placeholder paths with real absolute paths. Check that the binary exists on the VPS and that the service account can execute it.
  • Permission denied or missing files: Check ownership and permissions for the working directory, playlist inputs, configuration, and any environment file. Test access as the configured User.
  • It works interactively but fails as a service: The service may have a different user, working directory, environment, or access to credentials. Make those requirements explicit in the unit or referenced files rather than relying on your login shell.
  • Playlist no longer resolves: Check the URL, content availability, and player or yt-dlp integration. YouTube changes can affect extraction; update the relevant tool using your normal package or deployment process, then test interactively again.
  • Service repeatedly restarts: Read the first meaningful error in the journal. A restart policy can repeat a failure; it cannot make an invalid command, inaccessible file, or unavailable playlist valid.
  • Process is active but playback is stalled: Check media progress or output at the destination. Process-level status does not prove the input is advancing.
  • YouTube Live receives no feed or rejects it: Check the outgoing destination, network path, and stream key, and inspect the receiving side. Reconnect flags do not fix an incorrect key or destination.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating a VPS and systemd service. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. It also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. See StreamNeo for details. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
