These settings reduce specific kinds of exposure; they do not make a search invisible. LinkedIn warns that employer matching can be incomplete, and public search results may persist after you change visibility.
Choose who can see your Open to Work preferences
LinkedIn offers three Open to Work audiences. To adjust the preference, go to your profile and select Open to > Finding a new job, or look under job preferences in the Jobs area. Labels can vary by device or interface version, so confirm the audience shown before saving.

LinkedIn says recruiter-only visibility is based on comparing the employer on your profile with recruiter company IDs and mapped affiliated companies. That safeguard is not a promise that your employer cannot find out. You can edit or delete your Open to Work preferences.

Applying for a job and changing your profile are separate activities. LinkedIn says applications are private by default and do not notify your network simply because you apply. Profile changes, such as adding a position or promotion, can be shared through a separate activity control.

Before making discreet edits, review the profile-update sharing control in LinkedIn’s visibility or activity settings and turn off sharing of profile changes. The change still appears on your profile, so anyone who visits it may see the updated information. LinkedIn documents the distinction between profile edits and other activity in its visibility of updates, posts, and activity guidance.
Check whether an off-site application shares your profile
Some LinkedIn job listings send you to another website when you select Apply. A separate job-seeking preference can share your full LinkedIn profile with that job poster. If you do not want that transfer, inspect and disable the preference before starting an off-site application. LinkedIn says a recent share may be undone from the job-details page. Limit what people outside LinkedIn can see
Your public profile is a simplified version of your profile that may be visible to people who are not signed in and to search engines such as Google or Bing. Under public-profile settings, you can turn public visibility off or choose which eligible sections appear. LinkedIn also describes a public visibility limits control that can further restrict eligible fields even while public visibility is enabled. Search engines manage their own refresh schedules, and LinkedIn says updates may take weeks or months to be reflected. Old results or cached copies can remain during that interval.

Review connection-list visibility separately
You can control whether your first-degree connections can browse your connections list. This setting is distinct from public-profile visibility and from activity sharing. LinkedIn also notes that a first-degree connection may sync their own account to a partner service, where your connection list could be visible unless you separately opt out of profile visibility on partner services. Turning off connection visibility does not erase connection updates from your own feed. See LinkedIn’s connection visibility guidance.

LinkedIn groups many account controls under Settings & Privacy. Job-seeking preferences are generally in Data privacy; profile, network, and activity controls are generally in Visibility. Navigation and labels can change, so use the relevant setting names rather than relying on a single fixed click path. LinkedIn’s privacy settings overview and account and privacy settings guide explain the categories.

- Set Open to Work to “Recruiters only” or “Visible only to you,” depending on whether recruiter discovery is worth the added exposure.
- Turn off profile-change sharing before adding or updating job-search information.
- Review profile sharing with job posters before applying through a link that leaves LinkedIn.
- Choose public-profile visibility and fields, then review public visibility limits if you want further restrictions.
- Set connection visibility separately and decide whether to opt out of profile visibility on partner services.
