3 Free, Open-Source Windows Apps Worth Using Instead of the Defaults

PowerToys extends Windows utilities, Double Commander streamlines intensive file work, and mpv offers playback control with a minimal interface.

For Windows users who want more capable tools, Microsoft PowerToys, Double Commander and mpv each improve a different part of the experience: system-wide workflows, file management and media playback. They are not a measured ranking or universal replacements. PowerToys adds utilities to Windows, Double Commander suits intensive file work, and mpv gives technically comfortable users playback control at the cost of a conventional interface.

Which Windows defaults are these apps meant to improve?

There is no single built-in app that all three replace. PowerToys extends Windows with utilities, Double Commander is an alternative file manager for people who regularly move and organize many files, and mpv is a media player for users who value configuration over a polished graphical interface. Install only the tools that address a real friction point; the recommendations are based on their documented capabilities, not a controlled performance comparison.

Microsoft PowerToys adds useful utilities across Windows

Microsoft describes PowerToys as “a set of free, open-source utilities designed to help power users and developers get more out of Windows.” It is a suite, not a single app replacement. Its utilities include FancyZones for custom window layouts, Keyboard Manager for remapping keys, PowerToys Run as a quick launcher, PowerRename for bulk renaming, Peek for previews, and File Explorer add-ons. Together, these can improve window organization, shortcuts, launching and file workflows. Microsoft’s PowerToys documentation lists current features and setup details.

Where it helps—and a preview-handler caveat

The File Explorer add-ons can add previews and thumbnails for formats such as SVG, PDF, Markdown and source-code files. Microsoft says the preview pane can display source files across more than 150 extensions. However, enabling PowerToys preview handlers overrides other handlers, and Microsoft reports an incompatibility between Outlook and the PDF preview handler. If you rely on another preview handler, check the documented behavior before enabling the add-on. The GitHub page also says the application logs basic diagnostic telemetry, so open source should not be read as a promise that it is telemetry-free.

#1 Best Overall

Double Commander is a better file manager for intensive file work

Double Commander is a free, cross-platform, open-source file manager organized around two side-by-side panels. That layout lets you work with a source and destination at once, reducing the back-and-forth involved in copying, comparing and organizing files. The official Double Commander project site lists an internal text editor and viewer, full-text search, archive handling, plugin support, tabs and a multi-rename tool. It also supports FTP-family protocols and SSH/SCP/SFTP.

Those capabilities are most useful when you routinely handle large batches or complex folder structures. The interface is dense, so it may be more than a casual user needs; you can keep File Explorer for ordinary browsing and use Double Commander for demanding file jobs. Windows Central likewise presents it as a complement to File Explorer, an editorial judgment rather than a benchmark result. Windows Central’s Windows 11 roundup discusses it in that context.

mpv gives playback control, but not a conventional GUI

mpv is a free, open-source, cross-platform media player. Its official project overview describes broad support for media formats, codecs and subtitle types, plus scripting, OpenGL, Vulkan and D3D11 video output, and hardware-decoding APIs. These options make it a compelling choice for people who want to tune playback or rendering behavior.

The trade-off is central to the choice: mpv says it “strives for minimalism and provides no real GUI,” aside from a small on-screen controller for basic controls. If you want a polished, conventional player interface, that minimalism may feel like a drawback. Its documented capabilities do not establish that it is faster, lighter or better than a built-in Windows player on every device.

How the three apps differ

App Best fit Distinctive capability Main trade-off
Microsoft PowerToys People who want broader Windows-wide utilities Window layouts, key remapping, quick launching, bulk renaming and File Explorer add-ons Preview handlers can override other handlers; Microsoft reports an Outlook/PDF preview-handler incompatibility. Basic diagnostic telemetry is logged.
Double Commander People who regularly manage many files Two-pane file operations, search, archive handling and batch renaming Its dense interface may be unnecessary for casual file browsing.
mpv Technically comfortable users who want playback control Broad format support, scripting and configurable video output It has no full GUI, only a small on-screen controller.

The differences are about workflow and design, not tested speed or overall superiority. You can choose one without adopting the others.

Set only the file associations you want to change

Installing a player or file manager does not automatically make it the default for every supported file type. Microsoft Support’s instructions for Windows are to open Settings > Apps > Default apps, then either search for a file or link type and select an app, or select an app and configure its supported file and link types. Microsoft’s default-app guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Change only the associations you want; you do not need to replace every Windows default to use these tools.
