A reusable YouTube stream key does not keep a live event open. It gives an encoder the connection details to send video to YouTube; the event itself is managed separately in YouTube Studio. To keep a loop attached to a particular scheduled event, select that event in Live Control Room, connect the cloud encoder with its stream URL and key, check the preview, and click Go live. If YouTube has already ended the event, do not assume reusing the key will continue it: schedule or create a new event unless YouTube and your cloud provider explicitly confirm otherwise.
Stream key and live event: what each one does
YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key is a credential the encoder uses to send a feed to YouTube; it is not the live event or a promise that an event remains available for later sessions. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

YouTube’s Reuse settings option creates a new stream using the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and key. You can edit that new stream afterward. This reuses configuration, not one event indefinitely. A scheduled broadcast is a separate event managed in Live Control Room, and the encoder connects to it using the event’s stream URL and key. How to connect a cloud loop to the intended event
- Decide what the audience should see. Choose whether each loop is a separately scheduled and published event or whether the loop is meant to remain part of one continuously active event. Reusing a key does not make this choice for you.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select the event. For a scheduled broadcast, use the Manage tab to create or select the intended event. Make sure the cloud job is not pointed at a different scheduled event.
- Configure the cloud encoder for that event. Use the event’s stream URL and stream key. Keep a record of which YouTube event and key belong to each cloud job if you run recurring loops.
- Check the preview and event status. Confirm the correct video is reaching the intended event before starting the broadcast. YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions say to wait for the preview, then click Go live. YouTube’s encoder setup steps
- Choose the ending behavior deliberately. If the loop should end the event, click End Stream in YouTube and stop sending from the encoder. If the event should remain active, do not click End Stream; check with your cloud provider how it handles interruptions and reconnections. Auto-start, auto-stop, and stream-key reuse
YouTube offers Auto-start and Auto-stop, which let the encoder start or stop streaming when enabled. Those choices are copied when you reuse settings. They are encoder controls, not a documented guarantee that repeated sessions remain one permanent event. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
If an encoder reports a startup error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to get a stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. What happens if the loop reconnects after the event ends?
If YouTube has marked the event ended, treat the next broadcast as a new event unless the current YouTube interface and your provider’s documentation establish that the same event can continue. A reused key or copied settings alone is not evidence that an ended event will reopen. YouTube’s official pages describe event setup and shutdown, but do not promise same-event continuation after a cloud provider starts a fresh encoder session.

For a stream under 12 hours, YouTube says it is automatically archived. That archive behavior is not the same as keeping the live event active for a later loop. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Choose the workflow that matches your broadcast

Troubleshooting: why a new event may appear
- The job is connected to the wrong event. In Live Control Room’s Manage tab, check the event selected for the cloud job and confirm it uses that event’s URL and key.
- The event is already ended. Check its status in Live Control Room. Reusing its key or settings does not establish that the ended event can be resumed; schedule or create another event when a separate broadcast is intended.
- The encoder starts but YouTube does not show the expected feed. Wait for the preview, verify the event and key, and update the encoder with the key from Live Control Room if YouTube reports a startup error.
- The provider reconnects with a fresh encoder session. Ask the provider whether it reconnects to the existing event or starts a new session, and confirm the event’s status in YouTube. The answer is provider-specific.
- The event ends while the encoder is still sending. Follow YouTube’s shutdown sequence: click End Stream, then stop the encoder. For future broadcasts, make the event’s intended end behavior clear in the cloud job setup.
