How to Keep a 24/7 Indian Music YouTube Stream Running When SSH Disconnects

Keep a 24/7 Indian music YouTube stream running after SSH disconnects with remote tmux, or use systemd for boot and process recovery. Learn how to verify stream health and troubleshoot failures.

Run FFmpeg inside a tmux session on the remote Linux server before you disconnect SSH. The remote session can remain open after your SSH terminal closes, and you can reattach when you return. For unattended streaming that must also start after a server reboot or restart after FFmpeg exits, use a systemd service instead. In either case, check YouTube Studio: a surviving terminal or running process does not prove the broadcast is healthy.

Will an FFmpeg stream stop when SSH disconnects?

It depends on how FFmpeg was started. If it is attached directly to the SSH terminal, closing the connection can end or suspend the process. Starting it inside a tmux session created on the remote server separates the process from the terminal you use to connect. tmux 3.7c guidance verified in September 2026 explains how to create, detach from, and reattach to a remote session: tmux: Keep Work Running over SSH.

For background FFmpeg runs, include -nostdin. FFmpeg documents this option to prevent terminal input checks from suspending background operation; redirecting standard input from /dev/null is another option on Linux and macOS. See the FFmpeg FAQ, sections 3.19 and 3.20. This does not make a stream immune to server restarts, network failure, bad input, or YouTube ending the broadcast.

Choose tmux or systemd

Approach Helps with Does not provide Best use
tmux Surviving ordinary SSH disconnection and returning to the same remote terminal. Recovery after server reboot, FFmpeg crash, or a failed streaming connection. Quick rescue and interactive monitoring.
systemd Starting at boot, restarting an exited process, and consistent service status and logs. Proof of viewer-side stream health or repair of a persistent input, key, network, or platform fault. An unattended, self-hosted Linux stream.
Hosted looping service Avoiding the need to operate your own FFmpeg host. Control over your local server; capabilities depend on the provider’s features and terms. People who want a managed alternative to running their own host.

Use tmux if the immediate problem is losing an SSH terminal. Use systemd when you need a service that can start after reboot and restart when its process exits. Neither one establishes that YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast.

Keep the current FFmpeg run alive with remote tmux

  1. Connect to the Linux host over SSH. Run the following commands in the remote shell, not in a tmux session on your local computer. Replace indian-music with a short session name you will recognize:
    tmux new -s indian-music
  2. Start your existing FFmpeg command inside that session. Add -nostdin for background operation. Preserve your input, encoding, and YouTube output settings unless you have separately confirmed they need changing. A safe generic shape is ffmpeg -nostdin [your input and encoding options] -f flv "rtmp://[YouTube ingest URL]/[stream key]". The bracketed text is explanatory, not literal syntax; use the ingest URL and key shown for your YouTube stream.
  3. Detach without stopping FFmpeg. Press Ctrl+b, release the keys, then press d. You should return to the ordinary remote shell and see a message that the session was detached.
  4. Close SSH. The tmux session remains on the remote host during an ordinary SSH disconnect, assuming the host and account remain available.
  5. Reconnect and inspect sessions. SSH to the same host as the same user, then run tmux list-sessions. Reattach with tmux attach -t indian-music. If the session is not listed, confirm you connected to the same host and account, and check whether a host logout policy or server restart removed it.
  6. Verify the broadcast separately. Open YouTube Studio and check the live preview and stream health. tmux shows that a terminal session exists; it does not verify that viewers can receive the broadcast.

Run FFmpeg as a systemd service for unattended streaming

For a 24/7 host, systemd is generally a better supervisor than leaving a process in an interactive shell: it can start the service at boot and restart FFmpeg after an exit. The exact unit depends on your Linux distribution, media path, codecs, available encoder, command, and stream lifecycle. Do not copy a generic unit without adapting and testing it. StreamNeo’s systemd guide for an FFmpeg loop discusses a unit, restart policy, logs, and YouTube health checks.

Prepare the service and protect the key

  • Choose a dedicated service user where practical, and set an explicit working directory and absolute paths in the unit.
  • Keep the YouTube stream key in a protected environment file or another access-controlled secret store. Do not place it in shell history, a public repository, or broadly readable files. Restrict file permissions so only the service and authorized administrators can read it.
  • Define the FFmpeg command explicitly and include -nostdin. Confirm that the service user can read the media and required configuration.
  • Set a restart policy and a delay appropriate for your host. A delay can prevent rapid retries, but repeated restarts do not repair a persistent fault.

Enable, check, and test the unit

  1. Reload systemd after creating or changing the unit: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  2. Start the service and inspect its state: sudo systemctl start your-stream.service, then sudo systemctl status your-stream.service. Replace your-stream.service with the actual unit name.
  3. Enable it for boot: sudo systemctl enable your-stream.service. If you want to enable and start it together, use sudo systemctl enable --now your-stream.service.
  4. Read the service logs: sudo journalctl -u your-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager. Follow new log entries while diagnosing with sudo journalctl -u your-stream.service -f.
  5. Test recovery deliberately. During a planned maintenance window, verify that the service starts after reboot and that it recovers after an FFmpeg exit. Then check the actual YouTube preview and stream health.

systemctl status reporting active (running) means systemd sees a running process. It is not proof that the ingest connection is working, the broadcast is live, or viewers are receiving audio and video.

Use current YouTube encoder settings and protect the broadcast

There is no universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe value to add to every FFmpeg command: appropriate settings depend on the output you intend to send and YouTube’s current requirements. Check YouTube’s official live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance before changing an established command. Validate the resulting stream in YouTube Studio rather than assuming that an FFmpeg process starting means the configuration is accepted.

For an Indian music channel, also make sure you have the rights needed to stream each recording and that the material complies with YouTube’s policies. A continuous loop does not make copyrighted music authorized, and a functioning encoder does not guarantee that a broadcast will remain available if YouTube takes platform-side action. Review YouTube’s current rules for your content and channel before scheduling a long-running stream.

Troubleshoot disconnects, restarts, and a missing broadcast

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
FFmpeg stopped when SSH closed. It was started in the SSH terminal rather than inside a remote tmux session or supervised service. For the next run, start it inside tmux on the remote host. For reboot and process-exit recovery, configure a systemd unit.
The named tmux session is missing after reconnecting. You connected to a different host or account, the server rebooted, or a host policy ended the session. Verify the host and user, run tmux list-sessions, and inspect host policies. tmux does not restore a session after a reboot.
systemd repeatedly restarts FFmpeg. The process is exiting on a persistent error, such as an invalid or revoked key, missing media, permissions, unavailable encoder, or network route problem. Read the first meaningful error with journalctl -u your-stream.service; fix the underlying cause before relying on retries.
The service is active but YouTube has no healthy stream. A live process can still have a failed ingest connection, invalid output, or a platform-side issue. Check FFmpeg’s recent journal output and YouTube Studio’s preview and stream health separately.
The stream fails after a reboot. The unit may not be enabled, the service user may lack access, or a required path, secret, network, or dependency may not be ready. Confirm boot enablement, inspect the unit status and journal, then correct the relevant dependency or permission.
The stream does not recover after a power or internet outage. tmux and systemd cannot supply power or repair an unavailable network route. Restore the host and network first, then check whether the process or service recovered and whether YouTube Studio shows a healthy broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not operate a Linux host, StreamNeo is a managed option for keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube. The workflow is upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud loops the video, so your home computer does not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.

  • Each slot runs one always-on stream, with 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo team support, and 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots.
  • Uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode and one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Billing can be for a day, a week, a month, 6 months, or a year; cancel any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. For 5 or more slots, contact support.
