What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A Windows update that restarts your PC interrupts an encoder-based YouTube stream. To reduce the risk, set Windows active hours to cover the planned stream, schedule any pending restart for a break, or temporarily pause updates. After an update, let Windows finish restarting, then check your encoder and YouTube Live Control Room—do not assume the broadcast resumed by itself.
Why a Windows update can stop a replay stream
If your gaming replay is being sent to YouTube by an encoder running on a Windows PC, a restart shuts down that encoder and interrupts its connection. Windows update controls can help move a restart out of your streaming window, but they do not keep the encoder running through a reboot. The steps below apply to encoder streams; exact Windows and YouTube Studio labels can vary by version and rollout.

Prevent an update restart during the stream
Set active hours
In Windows Settings, open Windows Update and set active hours to include the hours when you plan to stream. Active hours help Windows avoid restarting during your usual active period; they are not a guarantee against every interruption, so check Windows Update before a long broadcast. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains the available restart and active-hours controls.

Schedule a pending restart for a break
If Windows says a restart is required, use the restart scheduling option in Windows Update and choose a time when the replay can be interrupted. Do this before going live rather than leaving a restart notification unresolved through the planned stream.

Pause updates temporarily if necessary
If you need more time before an update installs, use the pause option in Windows Update. Pausing only defers updates: they resume when the pause expires or you resume them. Set a reminder to install the updates after the stream; do not treat pausing as a permanent way to disable security updates. Available pause periods and labels can depend on the installed Windows version. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ describes update deferral.
Check the YouTube broadcast and encoder before streaming
- Open YouTube Studio and confirm the destination. In the Live Control Room, verify that you have selected the intended scheduled broadcast or stream. YouTube supports reusing stream settings, so check that the selected event and destination are correct rather than assuming a previous setup is still the one you want. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Confirm the encoder connection details. An encoder connects using YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in a recording, screenshot, or public post. If the encoder cannot connect or start, retrieve the key from the Live Control Room and update the encoder. Reset the key only if there is a connection problem or a security reason; after a reset, the encoder must use the new key. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance covers this process.
- Start early and inspect the preview. YouTube recommends setting up and starting the encoder ahead of the scheduled event. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast, and continue monitoring after it starts. See YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance.
- Test recovery after a real reboot. At a convenient time, restart the PC and let Windows finish updating. Then check that the encoder opens, has the intended replay source or scene, connects to the correct YouTube stream, and produces a valid preview. This test is especially important if you expect unattended operation: whether an encoder starts and reconnects correctly depends on the installed software and setup.
What to do if the stream stopped after an update
- Let Windows finish. Complete the update and restart before launching the encoder again, so the system is not still processing the update.
- Check the encoder destination and key. Confirm it is configured for the intended YouTube stream. If it cannot start, compare its connection details with the stream URL and key shown in the Live Control Room; update the encoder if the key has changed.
- Verify the stream in YouTube. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then inspect the public or unlisted watch page. If you record locally as well, check that the local archive file is growing.
- Check what actually made it on air. Do not assume that a restart resumed the missing portion of the replay. Confirm the watch page and any local recording before deciding whether to restart the broadcast or schedule a new one.
Can OBS restart and reconnect automatically?
OBS startup after a reboot and reconnection to YouTube are separate things. An OBS community forum discussion describes approaches such as a startup-folder entry or Windows Task Scheduler, along with an OBS start-streaming option, but it is not an official guarantee that a YouTube broadcast will reconnect unattended. The discussion also notes that reconnect may fail if the initial connection does not succeed. If you use an autostart setup, test it with your installed OBS build and current YouTube broadcast workflow before trusting it for a long replay.

Know the limits of long replay streams
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a promise of a complete archive for a continuous replay longer than 12 hours. If a complete recording matters, use an appropriate local recording as a separate backup and verify that it is being written; a reboot can interrupt that recording too. YouTube also requires you to have the rights to the content you stream. Check music, game footage, and other material against the applicable copyright rules rather than assuming that replaying content makes it permissible.

Does pausing Windows updates turn them off permanently?
No. Pausing defers updates only until the pause expires or you resume them.

YouTube’s encoder guidance only says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish a complete archive for longer continuous streams.
