To capture a page at a particular zoom, first decide which “zoom” you mean: ordinary browser page zoom changes how the page is laid out, Chrome Device Mode’s Zoom list scales the emulated viewport display, and device pixel ratio (DPR) changes screenshot pixel density. For a manual capture, Chrome DevTools offers viewport and full-size screenshots; Firefox DevTools offers full-page and element captures, plus a screenshot command with a DPR option.
Choose the right zoom control
| What you want | Control to use | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| See how a page reflows when enlarged or reduced | Browser page zoom | The page’s rendered size and potentially its layout |
| Scale the emulated viewport display in Chrome DevTools | Chrome Device Mode Zoom list | The displayed scale of the emulated viewport in the DevTools workspace |
| Change image output density | Firefox :screenshot --dpr or a documented DPR control |
The output image’s pixel scale, not ordinary browser page zoom |
| Include content outside the visible window | Full-page or full-size capture | How much of the document is captured, not its zoom |
These controls are not interchangeable. Browser page zoom, device emulation, DevTools viewport zoom, operating-system display scaling, and DPR can produce different results. The cited browser documentation does not establish consistent page-zoom effects across all capture methods and versions. When exact output matters, record the browser and version, page zoom, viewport dimensions, DPR, and capture type, then inspect the resulting image.

Set the emulated viewport dimensions, then choose a scale from the Device Mode Zoom list. This setting scales the emulated viewport display in DevTools; do not assume it is the same as changing ordinary browser page zoom.

If the task is specifically to test the site’s response to browser page zoom—for example, whether the layout adapts at 80%—set browser page zoom separately. Then verify the rendered page and the captured image in the Chrome version you are using. Chrome documents the Device Mode Zoom list and the two screenshot choices in its Device Mode guide.

Use the :screenshot command
To save a full page at a chosen output density, enter this in the DevTools command line:
:screenshot --fullpage --dpr 1.5 --filename page.png
The --dpr value controls image scale: values above 1 produce a more pixel-dense, enlarged output image; values below 1 produce a smaller-scale output. It does not set ordinary browser page zoom. Firefox also documents command options for a delay, clipboard, selector, and full-page capture. See Mozilla’s Taking screenshots documentation.
Firefox Responsive Design Mode also documents a DPR control. Viewport dimensions and DPR are separate: viewport dimensions define the emulated content area, while DPR affects pixel density. See the Responsive Design Mode documentation.

Use Chrome’s captured-tab zoom API only for captured tabs
Chrome’s Captured Surface Control API lets a web application with an active capture of a tab read or write that tab’s zoom level. It is a specialized captured-tab workflow, not a replacement for manually setting zoom before a local screenshot. Supported zoom levels vary by browser and version, so query the supported values rather than hard-coding a list. Details are in Chrome’s captured-tab zoom documentation.
Check the capture before relying on it
-
Confirm whether you need the visible viewport or the entire document; a full-page capture is not the same output as a viewport capture.
-
Check whether your chosen control changes page layout or only the output image’s pixel scale. DPR above 1 can create a larger pixel image without zooming the page’s CSS layout.

For reproducible work, note browser and version, page zoom, viewport width and height, DPR, and whether you captured the viewport or full page.

Menu labels can shift between releases. If a documented option is missing, check the current browser’s documentation and settings rather than assuming another zoom control is equivalent.
Troubleshooting
The screenshot looks larger, but the page layout did not change
You may have changed DPR or the DevTools display scale rather than browser page zoom. Set browser page zoom for a layout test; use DPR when you intend to change output pixel density.
The screenshot cuts off content
You likely captured only the visible viewport. In Chrome choose Capture a full size screenshot; in Firefox enable Take a screenshot of the entire page or use :screenshot --fullpage.
The captured zoom differs from what you expected
Check which zoom control you changed and whether the capture path honors it in your browser version. The documented Chrome Device Mode Zoom list scales the emulated viewport display; Firefox’s --dpr scales screenshot output. For browser page zoom, confirm the rendered result rather than assuming every capture method handles it identically.

A Chrome captured-tab zoom value is rejected
Supported values can vary across browsers and versions. Query the values supported by the current captured tab instead of submitting a fixed list.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a page through one GET request. It returns a screenshot or PDF, and its API accepts options for viewport, full-page capture, device presets, retina scale, and other capture settings. A screenshot API is useful for repeatable captures, but do not treat an API’s viewport or scale options as proof that they reproduce a browser’s ordinary page-zoom behavior; verify the output for your use case.
Example cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
For the API’s parameters and usage details, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.
