You can loop a cartoon video and publish it continuously from Ubuntu by using FFmpeg to pace and send the file, then running FFmpeg as a systemd service that can restart after a process failure. This does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream: a failed host, network, or destination can still take it offline, and you must verify the live output at the destination. The commands below are adaptable patterns, not a tested recipe for a particular Ubuntu release, media file, or streaming platform.
Before you start: confirm rights, media, and destination
Continuous rebroadcast requires permission for the cartoons, territory, and intended use. Owning a video file or being able to stream it does not establish rebroadcast rights. Resolve permission with the relevant rights holder before going live.

This workflow assumes one local video file and an RTMP-compatible destination. The destination is not specified, so its current ingest requirements determine the accepted endpoint, stream key, container, codecs, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Check those requirements before choosing FFmpeg options; no one bitrate or encoding profile is established for every destination.
Recommended Free Tools
- Keep the source file in a stable location that the service account can read.
- Check the installed FFmpeg build and inspect the file’s video and audio streams before selecting stream maps or encoding settings.
- Ensure the Ubuntu machine, power, storage, and network are suitable for the chosen workload. No hardware specification or bandwidth minimum is established here.
- Keep the stream key secret. Do not place a real key in a world-readable unit file, shell history, or logs. Use a suitably protected secret mechanism, such as a root-readable environment file with restricted permissions.
Build and check the FFmpeg command
Loop one file in real time
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping of an input file. -re paces file input in real time for live-style output. Input options belong before the corresponding -i. The following is a schematic command; it does not establish that the sample codecs, stream maps, or FLV output are accepted by your destination.

Use a playlist only after validating its behavior
A playlist or changing schedule is a different setup from looping one file. The sources here do not establish a current authoritative playlist recipe or seamless transitions between files, so do not assume that a single-file command provides those features. Validate any playlist workflow against the installed FFmpeg version and the media you intend to schedule.
Run FFmpeg under systemd
Run FFmpeg directly as the service’s main process so systemd can supervise it. In a unit file, configure an ExecStart command using the options and secret-handling approach you selected, and set a failure restart policy with a measured delay. The exact unit paths, account, dependencies, and delay depend on your machine and Ubuntu version; treat any example unit as something to adapt and validate, not as a universal tested configuration.

Ubuntu’s Noble systemd.service manual, for the packaged systemd version 255.4-1ubuntu8.17 identified in that manual, recommends Restart=on-failure for long-running services. Repeated attempts are subject to systemd start-rate limiting, and RestartSec= can prevent immediate repeated retries. A deliberate stop through systemd does not trigger an automatic restart. See the Ubuntu Noble systemd.service manual.
- Choose the service account and paths. Confirm that the account can read the media and protected secret, and that the paths remain available when the service starts.
- Write the unit. Put the FFmpeg invocation in
ExecStart, configureRestart=on-failureand an appropriateRestartSec=, and account for required filesystem and network readiness. - Validate before enabling. Use the verification tools available on your installed systemd version to check the unit, then enable and start it using your normal systemd administration workflow.
- Check both service and stream. Inspect
systemctl statusandjournalctl -u <service>, then confirm that the destination actually receives playable audio and video.
Understand recovery: output retries are not the same as service restarts
FFmpeg and systemd address different failure modes. FFmpeg’s protocol reconnect options apply to supported input protocols and conditions; they should not be assumed to restore a failed RTMP output connection. FFmpeg’s complete documentation describes FIFO muxer output recovery, including an example using -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1. That is a separate mechanism from restarting the FFmpeg process.

| Mechanism | What it can address | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg protocol reconnect options | Some supported input-protocol interruptions and conditions, as documented for those options. | Not a general RTMP output-recovery switch; applicability depends on the protocol and direction. |
| FFmpeg FIFO muxer recovery | Attempts to recover from temporary output failures while FFmpeg continues processing, when configured for the relevant output. | Does not guarantee that the destination accepts a re-established session or that viewers see no gap. |
systemd Restart=on-failure |
Restarts FFmpeg when the process exits unsuccessfully, subject to systemd’s rate limiting. | A new process typically means a new publishing session and an interruption; it cannot recover a dead host or ensure destination availability. |
Diagnose the failure before changing retry settings. Input loss, output-network loss, encoder or process exit, machine or power failure, and destination outage are distinct problems. Neither retries nor process supervision promise gap-free recovery, prevent duplicate content, or guarantee platform-side availability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMonitor a running stream and troubleshoot failures
An active FFmpeg process only shows that the process is running; it does not prove that viewers receive valid audio and video. Check the destination’s live preview or player as well as service status and logs. Watch disk, network, and CPU use, and investigate repeated failures rather than assuming automatic restarts have fixed them.
| Symptom | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits immediately | Service journal and FFmpeg error output; file path, permissions, input readability, command syntax, and installed build. | Correct the path, access, or options, then validate the unit and command again. |
| Service is active but viewers see no stream | Destination preview, endpoint URL, stream key, ingest requirements, FFmpeg output errors, and selected streams. | Verify the exact destination endpoint and key securely, and align the output container, codecs, and stream maps with current ingest requirements. |
| Stream drops when the network or destination falters | FFmpeg logs, network reachability, destination health, and whether the failure is on input or output. | Use only recovery options applicable to the failing path; distinguish FIFO output recovery from input reconnect and systemd process restart. |
| Repeated restart attempts stop | Systemd logs and start-rate limiting, along with the underlying FFmpeg exit cause. | Fix the recurring failure and review restart delay and rate-limit behavior rather than relying on tighter retries. |
| Playback has no audio or the wrong video | Input stream inspection, -map selections, and destination compatibility. |
Adjust stream maps or encoding settings to match the source and the destination’s ingest specification. |
