Use media you have rights to, publish over RTMPS, and monitor the stream in YouTube Live Control Room: a VPS and restart policy can reduce hands-on work, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
How the VPS streaming setup works
The Ubuntu server stores or accesses your story media, FFmpeg sends it to YouTube Live, and systemd supervises FFmpeg so it can restart after certain failures. YouTube remains the destination and provides stream-health information. A process restart cannot detect or fix every network fault or a stream that has stalled on YouTube’s side.

- Prepare the channel: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a broadcast. Get the current ingest settings and stream key.
- Prepare your media: Put story audio, visuals and any supporting assets on the VPS, after confirming you have the necessary rights. Decide whether the stream will play one recording or a playlist.
- Publish with FFmpeg: Configure FFmpeg to read the media in real time and send the encoded output to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
- Supervise the process: Run the publishing command through a systemd service configured to restart after failure.
- Check the stream: Watch YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and messages, including after a restart.
This is an architecture, not a tested, provider-specific deployment recipe. Server sizing and the exact FFmpeg command depend on your media, installed software build and VPS network capacity.
Configure YouTube and protect the stream key
Get the current ingest settings
Use the endpoint and key shown for the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS, which carries RTMP over SSL/TLS. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide documents the secure endpoint, port 443 and hostname/SNI handling. Do not take a plain RTMP example and assume it is encrypted; confirm the endpoint and transport in the current YouTube settings.

Keep the key secret
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a public script or repository, include it in screenshots, or expose it in logs. The reviewed documentation establishes the need for a key and the ingestion workflow, but does not prescribe a particular secret-storage implementation. Restrict access to the configuration that uses it and avoid printing the full publishing command where it could reveal the key.
Choose video, bitrate and audio settings
YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance accepts RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.

These are YouTube’s stated encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of image quality or a universal VPS bandwidth requirement. Select settings based on your actual scene, encoding capacity and sustained upload, then check stream health. A mostly static illustration may need less visual detail than full-motion footage, but the sources do not test or rank specific visual styles.

- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds and never above four seconds.
- Use CBR and a supported audio codec, such as AAC or MP3.
- Make sure the chosen resolution and frame rate match the media and are sustainable on your server.
- Allow upload headroom rather than planning for a bitrate your VPS connection can only just reach.
Use FFmpeg and systemd for an unattended process
Adapt FFmpeg to your media and current build
FFmpeg can publish prerecorded media to a streaming endpoint. The Ubuntu FFmpeg manual documents real-time input using -re and an RTMP publishing example; consult the manual for your Ubuntu release and the options supported by your installed FFmpeg build. The manual example is not a secure RTMPS command to copy unchanged. Adapt the input, codecs, bitrate, keyframe interval, endpoint and key to the current media and YouTube settings.
For a playlist, ensure the playback process advances to the next item in the way you intend. A command that ends when one file finishes will not, by itself, create a continuous sequence. Validate the exact playback behavior with representative files before relying on it.
Supervise FFmpeg with systemd
Create a systemd service for the publishing process and configure an appropriate failure-restart policy. For a long-running service, systemd recommends Restart=on-failure. Ubuntu’s documentation covers service overrides and checking a service with systemctl. After applying your configuration, check service status and logs, and confirm that a restart actually leads to a healthy YouTube stream.

Systemd can restart a failed process; it cannot guarantee the stream is healthy just because the process is running. Keep YouTube Live Control Room open during testing and check for health warnings or interruptions. A VPS provider, server load, network path and FFmpeg build can all affect results; no minimum CPU, RAM or storage specification is established for this workload.

YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test representative narration, music if used, visuals, transitions and playlist behavior. Check that the audio is audible and synchronized, the expected picture is present, and Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming stream. Also verify the service’s failure and restart behavior without assuming that a successful process restart proves YouTube is receiving the stream correctly.

Check every part of the content
Confirm that you have permission to use the story text, narration, music, sound effects and artwork. A story’s traditional or public-domain status does not automatically clear a particular written version, translation, recording or illustration. YouTube says an active copyright strike or a match to another copyrighted live broadcast can restrict livestreaming. Its live-stream restrictions also apply advertiser-friendly guidelines and rules for paid product placement and endorsements; do not assume a stream is eligible for monetization.

Make the audience setting match the content
Whether a Tamil bedtime-story channel should be designated Made for Kids depends on the actual content and intended audience; the title alone does not decide it. If the stream is designated Made for Kids, YouTube disables live chat and chat replay, comments on live archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications for upcoming streams. Personalized ads are disabled on live streams and premieres, though contextual ads may appear. Plan moderation and audience interaction around those restrictions.
